Do the moderators care if we rip models from other games? or is it strongly restricted like WoW models?

It's also be an infraction, if you steal models from other authors, and post them without their permission, or even worst; claiming them as yours. You could get banned inmedietly.

We do not allow ported models for a reason that is not "Oh we do not like them". The reason we do not allow them is they they are legally ilegal to do. Baically it mostly violates the games term of use or copy right. Thus by us distributing, the site becomes liable and can be sued for damages or permantly shut down. Although it probably will not happen, the orignal game making company of the ported model could do that.

We only allow WoW icons because if I am not mistaken Blizzard themselves stated that WC3 players could use them, as apposed to the models which they clearly stated that WC3 players could not use them.

Unrecognisably modified, of course. Or just 80% new material

hmm... what if... someone takes a model from a mod, (with the authors permission) of a game like... eh... wh40k. and converts it to be usable in wc3. does that still count as ripping?

and also, isnt it only illegal if you distribute it and make profit?

Oh, thought you meant taking models from a game and making them usable.

No its ilegal as you are distributing something for free that normally costs money to see / use. WoW models require you to buy WoW. Porting those models to WC3 allows people who have not brought WoW to freely use those models which puts them off buying the game to see those models. Thus they are not allowed unless blizzard says they are like they did with WoW icons.

With the authors permission, yes it should (not sure) be as long as their models or skins were not based on models from that game or ported from other games. This is because they then own the rights for that model and so can distribute it how they seem fit (including letting people port it).

hmmm... ok, my questions have been fulfilled.
EDIT: well...the reason was, i wanted to get the Grey Knight models from an Inquisition mod on Dawn of War. unfortunately , the author said he paid 2500 euros for it and wouldnt be giving them away.

2500€... either he was fooling you or he wrote the amount wrong... or he is just stupid. Also DoW models wouldn't be all that good for Warcraft 3 I think. Too high poly I believe.

i found a russian website where it tells you how to rip off of dark crusade. i dont have it, so im not even gonna try.
he personally commisioned a graphic artisit to make the models, and he made quite a few.

also made all the grey knights in my sig

i think he did miswrite it...

Well I supose 2500 is the cost of a graphic artist's time to make 20 odd models.

Afterall 90% of the cost of modern games is graphics.

It's not. With the author's permission it would be fine to use in your map, but not to put on the Hive. We want original work only here, like Mecheon said, 80% original or unrecognizable from the original.

I suppose this thread is ready for closing, but I must say that this greatly varies from country to country. In some places it's only illegal if you gain economical profit from it (local laws say so) no matter what distribuitors say. This is one of the main impediments that web-pirate hunters meet, because sometimes laws protect them.
