I've finally decided to redo the skin under the same basic guidelines.I decided to actually freehand almost everything except the face.
85% Work in Paint:
Solid shading, colorization.
15% In Gimp:
Enhanced shading, (Hopefully ingame) TC on the shield.

Tell me what you think. I'll test ingame later and post a screenshot when I have the time.

All I see is recolor.

Try using more freehand.

Do some freehand there
Add some mana runes, change the face

That's not a basic skin, that's a basic recolor.

Search the tutorials arround here and start to learn how to do the real work.
