Why does my mdx change to mdl when i add it?

Is it when you chose the model then looked at the list highlighted as .mdl? Because it always does that. Is it not working in-game? You sure you skinned it right? Try restarting the editor.

I don't know about the details why paths change from mdx to mdl but it never caused me a problem so I suppose it's totally natural. If your model is not working then you have some other problem.

WE's Import Manager often changes the file extension .mdx to .mdl.

If the imported file is a valid Warcraft III model and its texture file(s) are correctly pathed, it won't matter: the file will perform properly.

i've had this happen to me a few times, generally it occurs for me when I've either got 2 models with the same pathnames not needed (like that castle set with walls tower etc all using the file mauer.mdl) or sometimes it just happens with no apparent reason. Frustrating aye?
