A friend and I had an idea of making a map. He told me to look up triggers and JASS coding and stuff. What is the first thing I should learn, and the next thing after, before i jump into creating the map?

If you're new to modding in WC3, you will want to familiarize yourself with the world editor before trying a serious project. Edit some terrain, poke around in the object editor, see what you can make.

As for scripting you map, i would suggest learning JASS. (In the trigger editor, make a trigger, and convert it to custom text. (JASS Code)) While the GUI is a minorly expressive and powerful tool, writing raw JASS code is always preferable. (If you have learned how to code in JASS, of course...) If you do choose to learn and use JASS as opposed to learning to use the GUI, i suggest using the JASS NewGen world editor. (Link in my sig.) At the least, it prevents the editor from crashing on script errors.

There are plenty of tutorials in the tutorial section of this site, and over at http://wc3campaigns.net/ which explain many of the aspects of map editing.
