The Six Schools of Magic:

Fire, Ice, Nature, Darkness, Light, Arcane

Each elementary school of magic (not like a kindergarten to 5th grade school where wizardlings learn their first spells) is not represented by elementals but by Elemental Gods, who each have their altars/temples in various places on the map.

For example, Ice has its temple on top of a snowy mountain and Nature has its in the heart of a forest.

Each school of magic, as well, has its variants. A list of variants here:
Darkness: Necromancy, warlock, summoning, Demonic, voodoo.
Light: Paladin (anti darkness), lightning/electricity, teleportation, "magic missiles", enchantment
Nature: Resurrection, druid, transformation/shapeshifting, spirit, healing
Fire: Demonic(fire), destruction(fire), magical smithing, Mountain magic
Ice: Weather, destruction(ice), Mountain magic as well
Arcane: Nethermancy, Void Magic, Mind magic

Basically, there are six avatars of the elements on the map, these are not player-controlled (usually controlled by Red/host) and guard the temples. There are also people, and cities. Every race has essence of an element or multiple elements, for example Humans have Fire and Ice (from the mountain) and Elves have Light and Nature.

This is a theme I made up and it really worked well with the people I did it with.

Leveling for the theme: 1-3 = apprentice/untouched essence, 4-6 = elemental mage/warrior, 7-9 = hero, 10-12 = elemental master/archmage, 13-15 = Elemental avatar

Themes are useful between less experianced RPers, so they dont wander off and do insane things like the uber chickens from space, or Illidains son vs Archimonde 2. They give them limitations and structure, but for more experianced RPers, they just limit creativity and cut off breathing space to RP what you want.

The ol' fashoined castles theme where castles, towns, villages, ect. go at it after about an hour of prep. (I don't feel its a theme asmuch as a rts with infinite troops.)

DaT is definitely a story. Sure, it's a story with a lot of its own standards, but it's a story nonetheless.

I separate my stories into arcs (or chapters), that helps define them a little better.
