Does it cause leaks, if you return a local variable instead of nulling it?

If the local is not input as a parameter, then yes.
I've noticed this with locations, mainly.

like xonok said yes. Here is a way to get around the leak tho.

    function Two takes group g returns nothing
        // Do actions
    endfunction

    function One takes nothing returns nothing
        local group g = CreateGroup()
        call Two( g)
        call DestroyGroup()
        set g = null
    endfunction
