OK, OK, I was making a map at home and I added alot of new units. Then I thought to myself "Too many units. I should delete some of them". However, I made fantastic units and thought to myself "What a pitty!".

So I came with this idea: many people do uniting for fun. What if we could make a challenge, where with only using the obj. editor you must make a new unit?

Rules:
-No custom models, only blizz
-There can be custom skins, but remember that we are making units, not skins.
-No imported abilities
-There can be imported sounds
-No heroes
-The unit must be playable in your map from the beggining
-Remember - UNIT, not building. It must attack. (Buildings only if you're are doing something like Forgotten one, or only if your unit changes to a building)
-No triggers (only if they're for PRESENTING the unit, not for any effects on it's gameplay or look)

Points for:

Artwork - model choosen, skin choosen, colours, effects
Ballance - Abilities, Damage, other
Sounds - Walk, Attack, Speak
Originality - Really hard, I know. Story and Name ussually go here.

What do you think?

Actually, this could be kind of fun... not to mention really simple. I'd do it. Would abilities (non-triggered) be allowed for the unit?

not enough room for originality imo. You kind of restricted most of the things that would make the unit interesting n fun.

You should add some sort of theme, so it's easier to compare 1 unit to another, rather than having to compare a flying mage to a close combat ship or something like that...
For example: Arcane magics as a theme would mean all contestants must make a unit that has something to do with wizardry and arcane magics. Robotics theme would mean that the unit has to be mechanical and should have abilities that does not involve any magics. etc.

To me, the key to originality is RESTRICTING people. Ofcourse, don't restrict too much, but in general, restrictions open room for making various different units that could still be part of the same map.

Other than that, this contest is good because it is not time consuming (not like the other contests), has many possible directions (check the "theme" idea) and is open for a wide public instead of challenges such as the terraining challenge, model/skin or spell contest.

Something else: I'm a bit confused where you said "custom abilities are allowed" while "no triggering". I hope you clarify this by saying abilities should not be triggered/jassed but can be based on existing abilities

Hm. Seems rather.. simplistic. I mean, too many abilities would be overkill and nowhere near practical, but a well made unit by itself really isn't something to look at. How about heroes?

ya if it was hero it would be simple enough for most everyone.

and you'd be surprised what you can do with just the object editor and no triggers. an example of a spell i just made yesterday in only the object editor was a ward spell where the hero lays down a watery ward that floods the body of a nearby dead unit every 6 seconds, causing a watery explosion to all nearby units. How'd I do it? Simple, the serpent wards spell, but the summond ward is changed to a water model with no attack and low hit points with the raise dead ability. the raise dead ability is set to autocast on the ward, and it doesn't even show up in the wards menu because of the raise dead i used! the raised unit is set to a durration of .01 seconds alive, and has the explode on death ability. when it dies it explodes and i changed the explosion effect to a water explosion effect so it looks like the corpse is flooding, and it deals damage to all nearby enemies. its a sweet spell, was simple to do, and was 100% un triggered.

That spell (the raise dead part anyways) has been around for a few years now =/
Well, we've only seen it now, and he probably only created it now, and therefore, it is a showcase of his creative ability. Also, the raise dead part coupled with the ward part is only half of the spell. The explode on death part coupled with the miniscule life span of the raised units is the second part.
Anyways... to a certain extent, what does everyone have against triggers?
Nothing. But if we allow it in, it will probably turn into a showcase (using this word twice now) of triggered abilities, which is reserved for that other contest. We're doing this contest as a showcase (third) of creative ways to play with the object editor, like the techtree contest, only centered on a single hero.

I was referring to the raising exploding units, MySpace, I like how he made it a ward.

Also, the most complicatedly triggered isn't necessarily the best; the aforementioned spell would still be cooler than many triggered abilities, and triggers using barely any triggers (like a target-point war stomp) would still be just as good. (if, of course, they fit the unit well)

But meh, so be it.

Another Object Editor contest may take place after the conclusion of the ongoing Techtree contest.

Since only two users voted to participate in this one, it's being moved due to lack of interest (last post: 09-20-2007)

~ Thread moved to Unapproved Contests.
