Yeah, more tile variation, and you need to exsperiment more with the fog. Also you have to work a bit on doodad placement, and a good point is that the placement goes together with the tiles, like, if you got desert tile almost covering everything and some grass tiles here and there you dont place your grass models in the desert, but in the grass tile :p Also, another thing you allways need to think if is CONTRAST, make colours flaw together, and not have HUGR contrasts. And at last i wanna say the one sentence I allways work with when I make new terrain: How can I make a terrain that does NOT look like everyone elses? :p

Also allways think reality, what works and what does not work ?
