but you can make an invisible channel based ability hotkeyed to buttons you want
then detect them with triggers etc etc etc etc

And yea there is no native to detect when someone presses a character key
 
Aye, this question has been asked before and I answered it. In fact, I just answered one today. MindWorX is making an "IsKeyPressed" boolean native which will register if a key is pressed. Along with a periodic event, it should work.

Nothing to do but wait.

There many work arounds. The spellbook thing doesn't work and the invisible channel still takes up a space I think... And if you hover over it, despite it not having a tool tip, I think it will still create the bar thingy. But it is less conspicuous as an actual ability with an icon and everything.
