What is the purpose of this function? I see it used by everyoen in their multiboard code and I'm guessing I probably need to use it.

Do you just call it every time you get a multiboarditem and you're done with it?

Yes.

I want to say it has something to do with double accessing, or memory leaks.

ReleaseItem just releases that item in the multiboard from being changed.
