There are alot of maps that have been made, or in development, that are set in a current/futuristic scenario featuring the Human race as playable heroes that face off against an unknown menace. Most of these maps are forced to use the standard Terran Marine model to represent the entire human faction, because most related custom models aren't diverse enough or made to a high enough standard to be incorporated into a working game.

The purpose of this competition wouldn't just be to have Hive members pit their modelling and skinning skills against each other, but also to open a whole new area for map developers to explore by creating sci-fi models that would complement each other ingame. This would help expand upon the modding scenes futuristic warfare potential, and be something the Hive could be proud of initiating.

Contest Theme : Futuristic Human Infantry.

Theme Related Rules :
- The model must be based on the human race, and have a sci-fi theme.
- The model must be on foot.
- The model can be either light or heavy infantry, or an infantry officer.
- The model's primary attack must be ranged.
- The model's animation must consist of a minimum of the stand, walk, attack, spell, death and decay animations.
- The model must have a portrait animation (ie. atleast a camera on the model)
-no attachments. All weapons and effects must be part of the completed model.

I'd like some feedback if this would be a model comp that people would be interested in, or alternatively a comp that noone would be interested in ;P I know the theme rules may seem a bit constricting, but I think differently about it. As long as your model is a soldier and on foot, the only thing restricting a modeller from creating everything from its weapon type to its hairstyle is up to it's creator's imagination. You could have anything power armoured marine with a chaingun, to a cyber punk with a mohawk and revolver (Don't make this one, I'm already working on it ;D).

I dunno I think the specifications are too narrow. If I were going to enter this contest I would make a marine-type unit with a laser sword.

yeah I guess you are right about that ~Void~, I mean a marine type unit with a laser sword does have a fitting place. Maybe the ranged only condition is an unnecessary restriction. My idea was a bit bias there, as I was thinking along the lines that future warfare = gun warfare, but no, it doesn't have to be.

On a side note the models I am currently working on are of a similar theme, I've got a few cyber punk meshes I've completed. What I intend to do with those is give them ranged animations followed by alternate melee animations (much like druid >> bear form) to try make a game where the player can decide on their attack plan and method depending on the circumstance and what items/upgrades they have.

Do you think a model competition where creating morphing units (of any kind) would be a popular idea?

Just no. For some reason I jsut think this wont work.

LoL! wow, that was pretty blunt aha.... but I'm sure there is a way it could work. What if it was just reduced to a 'sci-fi theme'. Anything from infantry to robots to jetbikes with alien riders? Would that be more appeasing do you think?

My main ideas behind this contest concept was just to introduce a futuristic theme, and to restrict people just enough so that their models would fit close enough to almost be a race.. so in the end everyone is a winner if all the entrants could be used together successfully ingame.

Or.. maybe we could just change the whole thing to a horror theme and have everybody enter model variations of your signature ;O
