Memories
Marissa looked out across the seemingly endless expanse before her. The surf pounded in her ears, a deafening roar hammering at the cliffs beneath her feet. Wind whipped at her face, blowing her long hair about her in a tangled mess. Her arms hung listlessly at her sides, pale and seemingly lifeless. Somewhere far off, under the darkened sky, a solitary howl was heard, as if a curse at the moon which hung overhead, staring mockingly down upon the solitary figure.
Dim stars gleamed above, their light fading before the onslaught of dark clouds, which rolled slowly across the sky. The soft spray from the surf below, danced across Marissa’s feet, and sprinkled her pale dress with small droplets of water. The moon glistened across the surface of the water, shimmering it’s eerie yellow glow across the breadth of the sea before her.
A flash of lightning revealed a solitary tear, slowly falling down Marissa’s ghostly face, sparkling in the brief flare of light. Her lips began to tremble ever-so-slightly her eyes batting back more tears, as they sought to break free. The clouds above moved in wispy shapes, conjuring up terrifying images of memories and secrets, and Marissa’s dress shone like a beacon across the cliff tops, it’s ghostly white shape fluttering and billowing in the wind, writhing like a specter seeking to be set free. Her bare feet stood side-by-side, motionless beneath her dress, a sickeningly pale shade.
Another howl sounded in the distance, closer this time, barely audible over the surf’s constant roar. Marissa trembled slightly, her frail body swaying in the wind. Memories floated as images through her head, drifting back to a picture of a young girl lying by the side of a young woman. The woman lay woodenly atop a bed, eyes closed, body still. An open window sat to the side, where the drapes waved hauntingly about it, and the soft light of the moon shone through, illuminating the wooden floor about the two figures. A candle lay by the bedside, it’s wax all but gone, a flickering flame glowing dimly atop a withered wick.
Marissa blinked back the tears, the sounds of that night echoing inside her head. A cry for help, followed by the sound of hastening footsteps. The creak of a door, the gasp of a young girl—all told the story. The long, deathly howl, echoing in the silence of the room, and the final gasp of a dying mother. The sound of fear and then the mournful sound of silence.
The clouds rolled ever closer towards the moon, threatening to swallow up what little comfort it’s light offered. The deep sound of thunder rolled across the sky, and bright flashes of light flickered amidst the heavens. The wind quickened it’s pace, swirling about Marissa, causing her dress to dance in a chaotic frenzy about her. Tears streamed down her face now, pouring unhindered from her eyes, and falling across her billowing dress in torrents. Her eyes gazed seemingly straight ahead, past the wall of tears and into the night.
The chilling howl rose, once again, into the night air, causing a shiver to travel down her spine. The memories came in torrents now, a dead man lying face down by the side of the rode, one hand clutching his side. Blood trickled between his fingers, and his face was contorted in pain as he tried to tell the little girl by his side that he loved her. The sound of a gun. The cry of pain. The gasps of breath. The last words of a brother. The whimpers of a young girl. Images of a tombstone with a girl kneeling before it. The faceless tomb of a father. The wail of the wind. The cry of a daughter. All followed by the deathly howl.
Marissa trembled now, her body shaking convulsively, her face, streamed with the tears that had failed to come long ago. She fell to her knees, and put her head in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. The wind screeched all around the young girl, and the surf roared below her. The moon far above was shrouded now, a single glow of light emanating from beneath the dark veil of clouds, and casting its final glow across the waters, before being swallowed up by the blackness of night. The stars that had once shone overhead were now gone, their once dim light, non-existent. The only light left was from the flashes of lightning, followed by the deepening rumbles of thunder.
Then, it seemed as if all was still and silent, and the only sound was the slow, mournful howl, chilling Marissa to the bone, and causing her to shiver with fear. It had taken all she’d ever loved. Now it had come for her.
