Release notes from 2005:
Phewww, made it :D After 2,5 years log and hard work I've finally managed to let a dream come true. Starting and finishing a project and giving people the chance to play it. Naturally, I didn't spend the whole time on this project, the truth is, I was leader of a clan, had to manage our Homepage and took a lot of time-outs to play other games. But all this I can do now without having to think that I still have work to do. I hope that you have at least as much fun playing this as I had creating it.

This campaign may only be distributed with this Readme-Document. send complaints, praise, hints and information to alexandrosdelas [at] gmail [dot] com . As long as I am not on vacation or in jail (joking^^... I'm never on vacation ;-D) I will answer every E-Mail within a few days.

Lord of the Clans (Campaign)

Bob27: A good campaign. One thing that I think could be improved is the terrain, but still a very good campaign. Approved.

I skipped Chapter 3 for now and started with Chapter 4.
Chapter 4 is going to be a completely new Chapter about Thrall proving himself to the Warsong clan. Map design is very similar to Chapter 1 (Gladiator), in that the map is small, consisting of multiple arena battles and some corridors for side quests. Expected playtime is around 15-20 minutes.

I've already designed the first three fights:
* Gardok the Battlemaster: A warrior that uses Leap and Whirlwind (similar to the Diablo barbarian)
* Grima the Assassin: A blademaster who distracts you with Wind Walk and Mirror Image
* Gar'dal the Sorceror: A magician who uses Mana Shield, Feral Spirit and Flame Strike*

*For the sake of gameplay variety, let's just say that the Warsong clan has at least 1 shaman/magician hybrid

edit: I will rename Grom Hellscream to Grommash Hellscream and Thrall will only refer to him by Hellscream... Just kidding^^

What news?
Hi. I have been taking a larger break from mapping in general. Will probably not do anything for a few months. Normal phenomenon for me, so nothing to worry about.

I've generally overhauled/remade Chapters 1-3, and Chapter 4 was about 50% done before I stopped. Release is still very far away. I estimate a year from now.

I've been thinking about a couple drastic changes:
- Removing the minimap to make exploration more interesting and allow the level design to guide players, but I can understand that for many players this would be a very drastic change.
- Add a revive mechanic to save players the hassle of quicksaving/loading, possibly resurrecting enemies also.

Working some more on the Prologue.

- Replaced the old Gul'dan video with scenes from Blackmoore finding Thrall from the old prologue/current Chapter 1. The cut scenes with Gul'dan, Durotan, Draka and Doomhammer will be shown in a later Chapter. I wanted to cut down runtime significantly and make players adopt Thrall's point of view surrounding the mystery of his parents' deaths. Not everyone might like this change, but it is how it is :D
- Added a mini scene with a rabbit, more movement for Blackmoore and Tammis and closer cameras so things look less stiff and more cinematic. I am not an expert in cinematography but I think movement of any kind is always good.

You're making this campaign so complicated. I wish it was just a classic Warcraft style campaign with simple mechanics like in RoC\TFT or your first version of LotC, although it wasn't very polished.

You're making this campaign so complicated. I wish it was just a classic Warcraft style campaign with simple mechanics like in RoC\TFT or your first version of LotC, although it wasn't very polished.
The problem with that is, that, aside from the Siege mission, you were controlling only Thrall 80% of the time. You had 3-4 abilities (which were all pretty standard) and a high cooldown. Gameplay was very monotonous, especially when you had low life and no healing nearby.

In a normal campaign you usually have base-building, train units, research upgrades and sometimes more than one hero. So LotC 1.0/2.0 is basically just a reduction of features without giving anything new in return.

LotC 3.0 is trying to rectify that by giving you more stuff to play with. More abilities, many more upgrades, some buildings, and a second hero in the form of a backpack. Levels will be fewer but much bigger.
Also, there will be enhanced combat mechanics for stealth and you will have to actively dodge enemy abilities.

The campaign is becoming more like an action RPG, but I don't think this is going to overwhelm anyone, nor do I think this campaign feels like a different game (at least less so than the Last Guardian is). You will be eased into the new features via the first two chapters.

I should make a video of the second Chapter in the near future to give everyone a better view.

saw the 1.07 and the Regorged downloads in your dropbox @OutsiderXE

what might those be and what might should i expect to encounter if I play them

Is the current 3.0 update for LotC I am working on. WIP and very buggy. Haven't done anything beyond Chapter 4. Should work on 1.31.x. To be released summer 2021. I don't think you have access but you can give it a try if you can.

It's actually great you don't know. It makes the experience better. It's basically the unfinished/unpolished Chapter 3 of the WIP 3.0 update. You will encounter some bugs and a major twist I will not tell you here.
Needs version 1.31.x.

If you want to know before playing, watch the following video. Happy to read your thoughts!

yeah everyone actually has access. it doesn't load in 1.31.1 i guess it's similar to your new LastGuardain update id have to micro edit something on each map to have it load likely.

Anyway i peaked at the levels. They are quite large now and I saw thralls levelcap was 25 or some crazy shit. Jeez I guess you did go full on RPG

Yes. Level cap is still undecided. Right now I balance towards a level 10 cap. Might be I use the level 25 cap for some sort of new game plus.

Id just do 20 allows 5 max abilities at rank 4. One probably just being a stats upgrade

Differentiate new playthroughs with new classes. Shamans have wnough talents between fire water earth and storm to where you could make it simple to figure out the concwpts behind each class

Which is a little more valueable than ng+

I want it to be different from DotD. In DotD you choose a Rhonin class at the beginning of the game and stick with it. Thrall has only one class in 3.0 with different types of abilities.

- Normal hero abilities: Mostly passive bonuses, e.g. for attack speed. Your backback can also level up and has its own non-combat abilities (e.g. Build a Fire Pit). Unlocked via attribute points. Backpack gains attribute points from some optional quests.
- Combat abilities: can be switched at Fire Pits. Can be mixed in different ways. E.g. you could have shaman abilities like Chain Lightning along with Gladiator abilities like Raging Strike. Combat abilities and their level ups are unlocked via main quests. You need gold to buy/upgrade them.
- Upgrades that grant passive bonuses and stick with you no matter what. Unlocked via completing optional quests. Must be bought with gold and lumber.
- I will remove all permanent items! There will be a higheer emphasis on temporary, crafted items (e.g. for Healing).

As you see this is all new and a bit complex. I really need to finish all of the maps first before I can definitely decide how hero levels will be distributed among chapters. Balancing is usually the last thing I do.

WIP of new Chapter 4 - Trial of the Warsong

This used to be the cinematic with Thrall meeting the Warsong Clan forced to fighting them. I have expanded this into a full chapter with multiple quests:
- Main quest: Fight various opponents with unique skills
- Main quest: Try to escape from the cavern without killing any orcs
- Main quest: Help Hellscream chase down an ancient yeti
- Optional quest: Guide exploding sheep to slay an Elf Mage
- Optional quest: Not decided yet: Probably just talking and gathering information

Chapter is around 70% complete. Still need to flesh out the final main and optional quests, work on terrain and some cinematics.

Expected playtime is 20-30 mins.

Because I was just asked: I'm currently working on PTR 1.31 to update all of my campaigns. I am aware that not many people are using this exact version and may experience problems playing the latest versions (even Retail 1.31 seems unstable when playing a PTR 1.31 map). My long-term plan is to move over to the latest Retail version once Reforged has re-introduced custom campaigns. Hopefully then everything will remain stable and people no longer have to maintain the WC3 versioning themselves.

Sometimes people ask me if I can make the new campaign updates playable for old WC3 versions. Simple answer: Not possible. Even I could find out what exact changes I need to make, I refuse to maintain multiple WC3 versions as everyone might have their own preferred version. I hope in the future we can go past this so everyone just uses the latest Retail Reforged version. If you want to play on old WC3 version you can find old versions of my campaigns on my Google Drive (see links in my signature).

I may not believe in Reforged as a game, but I believe in the (possible) technical benefits: e.g. updates to the editor, the ability to maintain SD/HD and even multiple localizations in single files.

After many months of distractions (update to my SC2 campaign) I've made some progress on LotC 3.0. I've completed Chapter 4 and the first new Interlude. The interlude shows Thrall and Hellscream discuss the imprisoned orcs and Blackmoore getting news about Thrall.

I've also started redesigning Chapter 5. This is probably the biggest Chapter, but as it has already so many quests implemented, I think the work ahead of me is not going to be so much. Plans for Chapter 5 are:
- Implement 4-6 new quests
- Redesign the entire map (make it smaller while at the same time use the given space more effectively)
- Redesign existing quests (improve area layout, more scripted events)

In more detail:
- All the areas will be properly be connected (no more cinematics to get you from one quest area to another)
- The road to the Frostwolf quest will host new optional quests (defeat visions, slay bounty hunters, follow injured yeti)
- In the road to the Frostwolf quest: the limited-vision mechanic will be removed, the damage-by-cold mechanic will only be in certain areas at certain times
- The pig quest is going to become optional
- The lumber/pacman quest is going to become optional
- The ogre base camp quest is going to become bigger
- New main quest about an evil warlock
- The final Drek'Thar cinematic will be a boss fight
- Possibly more optional quests

I am trying to add more connections to WoW, including areas. The Smash quest, featuring towers you have to destroy with Catapults now resembles Alterac City, taken over by ogres from the Crushridge Tribe.

I've made some excellent progress these past weeks. About 70% of all gameplay is complete. Still missing the Drek'Thar bossfight, the Warlock quest, some encounters for the Smash quest and a lot of testing. I might squeeze in one additional optional quest. I also need to implement cinematics (bottom left corner is reserved for the Intro).

I should definitely be able to finish this map by the end of November, giving me enough time to play Cyberpunk 2077 until the end of the year :D This means I'm still on track for a release in Summer 2021.

As Chapter 5 is nearing completion I am starting to bring my ideas for Chapter 6 to the editor. Important changes:
- All existing main quests for the Spirits will become optional quests.
- Each Spirit gets a new main quest in the form of boss battles.
- Spirit quests will no longer be chosen via dialog; instead there is a new main quest where you get control of Thrall and Drek'Thar and have to bring both of them to Circles of Power (one for each Spirit) (then Thrall is teleported to the boss).
- Optional quests that were main quests before are now connected in that big area.
- The old Chapter 1 (with Durotan and Draka) is now split into two optional quests for this chapter and will be shorter (probably about half of its original duration).*
- The old Interlude (with Gul'dan) is now part of that optional quest.*
- New optional quest to help Snowsong and gain her as a companion.

* Not 100% decided. I might add some Durotan/Gul'dan bits back into the current Prologue if the change doesn't feel good.

Amazing campaign, I remember in 2012 when I was a little, my mom bought for me a pirated version of warcraft 3, with some custom campaigns (that's when I decided to explore the community) and your campaign was in it, I played it and enjoyed, and still remember the difference from that time to now, loved the whole campaign.

Chapter 1: The story of tharll's parents, I liked the custom models and spells, even if they where from 1 mission, crazy spells

Chapter 2: Young thrall as a gladiator, it really makes me want to read the book, the side quest of reading the story is engaging.

Chapter 3: How thrall escapes from the town, I love every game that has to do with stealth, and the dog was very useful.

Chapter 4: The 4th chapter was average for my taste, I liked the side quest with the blind family, also a little bit sad.

Chapter 5: Another stealth mission, was very good, with the different tipes of food.

Chapter 6: I loved this mission, with the frost always damaging thrall and the illusions turning into wendigos, the exploring is rewarding and also has my favorite loading screen.

Chapter 7: Nice mission, everything is explained, although I didn't understand the life mission too well, about making the stag survive.

Chapter 8: Good custom units, the elite warriors were helpful.

Chapter 9: This mission was easy, the yellow base especialized on air units that were countered with watch towers, the blue base with half a dozen units, and the grey base with Drek'thar.

Chapter 10: Was very good, I liked the las mission a lot, every segment had to be beaten differently.
I played all the missions on hard difficulty, but didn't feel the challenge, and I think that Thrall on foot is a little overpowered with 2 stuns, the final boss was pretty easy to beat, and the runes spawned on a cycle, I guess random spawns would've been better.

The campaign changed a lot since the 1st time I played it, was watching the screenshots and I guess you should update the screenshots of the page, because of the new models.

The only thing this campaign lacks is voice acting :psmile: 5/5

I see my last proper progress update for 3.0 is almost 3 months old. As progress went faster than expected, I took a break to play some games^^ I don't have much new information:
Chapter 6 is about 25% completed; estimated to be feature complete by the end of the month.
I also finished a first layout for Chapter 8 and have some new ideas for Chapter 7... Release of the 3.0 update still planned for summer this year.

edit (2 days later): 45% ;)

(another week later): Chapter 6 is now around 80% finished. just one more mini boss battle, a few cinematics, terrain and a lot of polishing to do. Polishing will be done after all maps are finished. Below you can see a screenshot of the map (terrain barely started):
- Map size is increased from 128x160 to 192x160
- Number of quests increased from 6 to 15 (one is just a general guide telling about other quests)
- Drek'Thar is playable for this map. He will acompany you on your way to each Spirit (and then you teleport to the Spirit and fight it alone).
- This map has inherited all gameplay from the old Chapter 1 (Durotan/Draka) split into two optional quests - and removed about half of the content for manageable size (sorry, but in my opinion in was just too much). In these optional quests you will also find the cinematic for the old prologue (with Gul'dan and the shadow council).
Moving Durotan's fate to this late in the campaign is risky but I hope it pays off. It feels better to start off with Thrall, and hopefully will make his journey more relatable as you find out about his parents the same way he does.

Making a new UI for the abilities and upgrades.

The current (my 3.0) user experience is quite cumbersome. If you want to upgrade and use a new ability you have to:
1. Select your Backpack
2. Build an Anvil
3. Select the Anvil
4. Press the ability you want to upgrade
5. Select the Fire Pit
6. Choose the ability type (Q, W, E or R)
7. Choose the ability you want to use

New UI will simplify it a lot:
1. Select the Fire Pit
2. Open the new UI
3. Click on the + to upgrade an ability
4. Click on the ability to use it

It's just three steps but the fact that you have it all in one view makes it so much more comfortable. I hope to be able to finish and showcase this in a small video by next weekend.

I know things like UI changes should just be superficial differences, but sometimes it really pumps me up to play a map/campaign when I can see cool stuff like what you are showing in your screenshots.

I've been spending this month implementing the new ability UI into all existing maps and polishing them. Here are screenshots of the new areas for the elements quests in Chapter 6 (Path of the Shaman). Can you guess which is which?^^

After this first poloshing phase I have two more chapters and two more cinematic maps to make; luckily all of them are relatively small compared to what I have created so far. My release window of summer 2021 is getting closer.

First polishing phase for Chapters 1-6 completed. I implemented the new ability UI + all the missing terrain, quests and cinematics I skipped before and played the campaign up to that point.

I also played the campaign for the first time in its current entirety. Chapters 1-6 took me around 5 hours doing almost all quests.

Today I also finished the new Interlude (2) set between Chapters 6 and 7, which shows Thrall and Doomhammer discussing their plan for the internment camps and Blackmoore getting an idea.

Now I can focus on Chapter 7. It's one of the smaller maps and already 20% complete.

Release window for the campaign is getting closer. I expect Chapter 7 to take around 2-3 weeks for completion and Chapter 8 + the Epilogue around 3-4 weeks. Then I will need an extended polishing phase (2-8 weeks, don't know yet). If things go well the campaign could be out in May/June.

Chapter 7
Gameplay 100% complete
Terrain 90% complete
Cinematics 20% complete

Skipping Chapter 7 for now to work on the final Chapter!

I've decided that the old Chapter 7 (the MOBA map) doesn't fit well with the layout of my existing Durnholde. It needs more space for the armies. So I went back to Chapter 2 today and remade some parts of it, and now for Chapter 8 I am doing the rest (the lanes) from scratch. Don't know how long that will take me, but I hope to have something presentable by the end of the month.

I just completed a major milestone: All gameplay for Chapter 8 (Siege of Durnholde) and the entire campaign is now finished. Only thing left now are some cinematics and terrain for Chapters 7 and 8. I will merge the Epilogue map and Chapter 8, as there is no reason to split them (there is no dungeon map inbetween). I guess I can finish all this within the next few days.

Chapter 8 works very similar to the old The Horde Awakens map or the final Rexxar map, in that it is a MOBA map where you get to control Thrall and help allied forces push through waves of enemies. There is a small gameplay section before that, where you have to find Taretha, and another one after with a revamped Blackmoore bossfight. You also get to fight Langston and Sergeant as minibosses.

There is still quite a bit of work ahead. I need to replay, polish, bugfix and balance the campaign, which will require numerous playthroughs. I'm confident I can release the update within the next 2-3 months.

Edit: I decided to implement a small... let's call it easter egg: In Chapter 6 there is an optional quest to gain Snowsong as a companion. If you do not complete it, Snowsong will not appear in the future cinematics.

Edit 18-04-21: All maps are now complete. Time to play the entire campaign an infinite amount of times :) Right now I think it will take 2-3 months to release; maybe less, definitely not more.
