I was inspired (by nothing really ...) while being sick of making a rather large WC3 Altered Melee - using WC3 races, going from the ancient age of Orc domination until the very near future where Dwarfs reign.
The 6 tech tiers would be laid out like this:
1 & 2 are under Orc dominance, with Orc units being cheaper than other race units.
3 & 4 are under Human dominance, with Human units being cheaper than other race units.
5 & 6 are under Dwarf dominance, with Dwarf units being cheaper than other race units.
The core race units would also be used a lot more and would, usually, form the bulk of your army.
- the first builder would be an Orc slave, evolving into a Human engineer and then a Dwarven architect. Each one would be able to build the same type of buildings -- but with a twist. After evolving each age (or tech tier) you will be able to research an upgrade, instantly replacing older buildings with newer ones, of the type researched.
- the researching would work easily with units as well, as exampled with the builder. (example: at the bottom) However, 'other race' buildings and units cannot be upgraded, which is why you can only have one of their buildings at a time. (ie. one Mage Tree).
- whilst having Barracks for All around units, melee units, range units and siege units, the Spirit Tent, Mage Guild or Temple offer caster units, at least one healer and one damage one. These units would be of the current core race.
- besides the main buildings, you can also Plant or Summon Night Elven and Undead buildings. These offer specialist units of the specific race (ie. a Mage Tree offers Night Elf Druid Healers and Night Elf Bleeder Druids).
- the Barracks would have 4 units each and 3 or 4 researches each. Some researches are needed for others, usually to hire the siege or ultimate unit of the tier. (ie. Tech Tier 1 would have Orc Warriors with no research required. However, Troll Axe Throwers would need the Troll Mercenary Agreement research and Orc Berserkers the Berserker Training tech. Ogre Clubbers need Ogre Enslavement, which requires 4 other techs).
- some required researches are damage and armour are there to simply prevent people from tech rushing and getting strong units fast - simply because they then wouldn't be strong.
Evolving would work like this: an Orc Warrior evolves into an Orc Bloodthirster, which evolves into an Orc Wolfrider -- nearly the same as an early Ogre unit. This would then evolve into Human Militia, naturally more powerful due to their better equipment, which evolves into a Human Swordsman, which evolves into the Human Rifleman. He then evolves into a Dwarf Rifleman, who evolves into a Dwarf Machine Gunner, who evolves into a Dwarf Marine -- this being the last core unit.
Each time you research an upgrade, it works like Troll Headhunters and Berserkers. Instant upgrade.
What do you think? Ideas for it?
