Even though this is not and admin or mod starting the thread, I think it's fine to suggest ideas.

Personnally, I'd go for Beasts theme, meaning not necessarily an icon for a unit, but more of a beast-themed spell icon, like a glowing eye and such.

BTW, voting has become way too complicated. You should probably just stick to public vote and judging.

Perhaps the contest could be about making new icons for the spells of an existing hero. The fact that they have to express the same ability, yet are completely different than the originals will show how well the creators' imagination works. Besides, there are many heroes to choose form. And the grading should be easy: the person whose icons best represent the abilities win...

It's about time to get the ball rolling, WILL. If I cant find another staff member to host the contest I will do it myself (when I manage to find the time: hopefully within two weeks, either way.
