Is it possible to make a unit or doodad appear as an icon instead of its model file ingame and have it appear flat on the ground?

Not really.

Every image that is displayed needs to have a one pixel wide alpha channel border around it, otherwise the image will be stretched/distorted. You need to import a custom image.

Is there any easy way I can do that?

If I wanted to use the icon of a palading as an image on ground, I would export it with war3 viewer. The I would open it in GIMP and rescale the image to 63x63 then resize the canvas to 64x64 (if the original image was 64x64). You might have to do some .blp to .tga conversions.

There is a program called button manager or something, can't remember if has a feature of adding the transparent borders.

Yeah, BLP Lab does it if you click the alpha channel settings or something. It should have an option for a transparent 1 px border.

@Razosh: A sort-of similar technique is used in custom inventory systems, in case you're interested:

It has a square model that is a flat plane, and you can make a destructable in the object editor and dynamically set its texture to an icon (just see that demo map for an example). The texture is set in the object editor to different icons for different destructables. I'm not sure if that is exactly what you wanted though.

use the method they use in fullscreen systems? they use a destrucible with the icon as texture.

You mean as a ground texture? Sadly I think I might need more textures than what WarCraft can provide but it's a good idea.
