I'm trying to make an item do initial fire damage (through a normal attack), then burn the target for damage over a certain interval, but no matter what I do, it's not working right. The abilities are really annoying to work with, too. What do I have to do to make this work the way I want it to?

Hmmm, I suggest making a poison ability. It deals continous damage right, same as burning. Just change its model to fire related and maybe that will work.

Default Wc3 i think dont have burning effects as normal attacks so I suggest making a poison ability juts change its models to fire related because poison that deals continuous damage is same with burning too. It's worth a try!

Unit Damage + Initial Damage + DPS

The DPS half can be put through the Normal attack as a poison. The Initial damage be added on by quicking adding a 100% chance bonus damage on the amount that you want to deal. (No I am not talking about Critical hit)

You can always add bonus damage onto the unit through a buff, then after the attack you can remove the buff and BAM the Initial damage is gone. and was directly transferred through the unit.

You can always use a Damage System as well.
