i suggest you try to get your hands on 3ds max 5 or something because gmax is just going to piss you off along with blender and milkshape. gmax is just too damn hard to animate and export, blenders exporter doesn't work and milkshape has problems too. gmax is nice for learning basic modeling but if your using it to make stuff for wc3 i would suggest you didn't. honestly if you cant find 3ds max your getting your hopes up with gmax. I'm just speaking out of experience and frustration. i too would love to model but its just not worth the amount of trouble in most cases. i wish you alot of luck what that program, if you get it to export correctly please let me know.

well from what ive read on the forums about milkshape not doing things properly and stuff. i was just listing things that ive seen have problems. i do not know all that much about milkshape, i had it for a while and i couldnt get it to work really . im not saying milkshape isn't a good program, it does have many other game importers and exporters. i was just stating some things ive read, some could be false i dunno. i tried every to export mdx in every program i listed and i had no luck, which probably means im too stupid to figure it out :p.

Milkshape is wonderful. A lot of people know this. It doesn't have problems exporting if you are smart, the only problem I can think of is no Beizer or Hermite interpolation and no scaling on animations. But those aren't incredibly important.
IMO if you can't afford 3DS Max, which is most likely the case, Milkshape is an excellent substitution.

blender

Nah go to blender, its the best :D. I tried milkshape but i didnt like its layout. I started with Gmax though and I have to say i like how it UV unwrapped textures. But maybe Gmax killed my sense of taste lol. It was a hard program to manipulate correctly.

animation

Ill let u know in just a min, i just riggged my model and ill import within the hour.

*Edit* Well model is showing ingame but no animation, bah.
I dont know how to set the name of my animation though to stand ready or w/e. So that could be a problem to. If I knew how to or if its possible to name the parts of the animation ill give it another shot.

*edit2* hmm what files can these other programs import or open? EX: 3ds. obj. iwo. etc.

solution

Well my only solution so far is to model in blender and export in 3ds and use like gmax to import the 3ds using a maxscript and bone-animate it their.
I just imported my model into gmax and ill try animating if i can remember how to with gmax :p.
