Here's a tip. When something glows, it glows in all directions(from all surfaces) so if you only add glow to the background, it looks unrealistic. Add an upper layer to the picture and experiment with adding glow in front as well. That always works for me.

Hmm, I did try that, but it looked retarded and fuzzy. I want a nice, sharp glow.

Low opacity brushes/layer opacity adjustment? Try using 10% exposure soft round brush and only apply it on the edges just to make the transition smoother.

I think I'm going to use a brush with opacity jitter to fit the texture of the rock.

The glow doesn't look extreme enough for the rock. Uh. That is to say, the glow should be a lot more intense, due to this being a red-hot rock and all.

Also... filters will eat your soul. Blah blah blah.

make a new layer and paint over the stone with a solid, red color. then put the layer beneath the rock, apply gaussian blur: you've got glow! yay.

Didn't work. It looked just like what I have here, except it didn't fit the color scheme and it went all over the rock instead of just the bit that was lit up.

I think I need to make something more complex than just a regular glow in order to match the sharpness of the rock.
