Basically a dummy spell is used to to activate triggers for a spell. So let's say you wanted a spell that summons 100 units in an area, but you can't find a spell that can do it, you would make a spell that summons a deer for instance, and with triggers you would get rid of the deer and create 100 units in its place.

To the second question

Mostly a dummy unit is used to cast spells on other units (e.g. for mass sleep a unit is created that casts sleep on every unit in the area). Best is to create a dummy unit using a small model and then scaling it to 0.01 or so, so you can't see it any more. Of course the unit is invulnerable, can't attack and is removed after it did its work. Else it could cause some problems.

Short: It's a unit that's only created for a short time to do something that can't be done with triggers (e.g. there's no trigger like Unit - Cast "invisibility" on unit), you have to have a unit that casts the invisibility.

Alos it can be used for visual effect... like Critical X there is a dummy of the hero casting because the real hero would attack the unit before he does the animation.
