You could use square-shaped destructibles and create one for each 'ability' (read: icon) and give it your icon (as in .blp) as texture.
There are plenty of systems that do this afaik, so just have a look in the spells sections :3

However, for your purposes I highly recommend annx's suggested method as it is a bit more dynamic. With images, you would have to create a custom image with a 1px transparency border for every icon, whereas with a square-shaped destructible you can just set the path to whatever you want and you are good to go. They are also a bit more easy to deal with since more people are familiar with destructibles.

But there are a lot of others too. You can just open the map, export the "IconBase.mdx" and use the objects he created in the object editor as a basis to figure out how to make it work. Good luck.
