I have a weird theory. In chapter 7, FOB ( oh the nightmares), Zairmak talked about ancient, evil magic. Then he mentioned meeting the most dark and dangerous human of all time. Of course he could've been referring to Gardon, but calling him a soulless abomination sounds a bit extreme. What if he was referring to Brian? He would fit that description a lot better.

Even though Redfist hates the orcs ever since Rangul killed most of his family ( the "burning islands" short story gave us a subtle confirmation), he began his crusade against them fairly recently, so I doubt it's him.
Plus, he doesn't seem like a person who would use a blood shield. He prefers burning rather than sacrificing, at least from what we've seen.
