Combat Attacks 1&2 Question and a Trigger

Hey guys,
Im wondering how the combat attacks 1 and 2 work. if i enable both then how do i get the unit to use one or the other. is it random between the two? or have i completely overlooked a resource which explains it.
Ide like to know because i have an idea for a trigger but i dont know if it will work the way i think it will. What im thinking is have a hero be melee but have the attack 2 be ranged. Ide like to have an inventory item which can be clicked as a spell which would change it to attack 2. and then click again to go back to melee. In essince i want to have a gun in the inventory which can be clicked to use it and clicked again to revert to the standdard melee. Is attack 1&2 the way to go about this or is there another way?

Thanks, i get how attacks 1 ad 2 work now. Ive seen heroes change their attack range in game. so there has to be a way to alter other characterists as well..

Im wondering how the combat attacks 1 and 2 work.
In fact, the two attack is used to allow difference between target type
a sample: you want to make a "building breaker"
attack 1 : strong and allowed on building target
attack 2 : weak and allowed on ground target
this is a unit weak against other ground units, but strong against building
and when the two attack allow the same target type, the 1 is used for.

attack 1&2 the way to go about this or is there another way?
No, the way to do this is to make an item with an offensive ability
(there is already item summoning, healing, dispelling, it sould be possible)
