Chapter IV: Heart of Ice

Submitted by Soul Reaver
This bundle is marked as approved. It works and satisfies the submission rules.

ATTENTION!

This map is now available as part of a larger, updated and enhanced Campaign file. The campaign includes the conclusion to this epic, so it is strongly recommended you play the Campaign instead of this slightly outdated version of the standalone Chapter.

You can find the campaign on Hiveworkshop here:
http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/maps-564/bitter-end-202289/

To the Bitter End
Chapter IV: Heart of Ice
Version: 0.7.05
(Beta release)

Single Player Action RPG/Campaign

Their continuing journey to find another of their comrades takes Soul Reaver, Fei Serumen, and Cameron Aileron to an icy world harbouring a terrible evil...

********

Map description:
----------------

Control Soul Reaver, Fei Serumen, Cameron Aileron and Kitharsis as they try to battle their way across the wind-swept, icy wastes of a long-forgotten world.

Installation instructions:
--------------------------

Put the .w3x file into a folder named "To the Bitter End" (without quotation marks, obviously) in your Warcraft III "maps" folder.
You can play the game by starting The Frozen Throne, then selecting 'Single Player', 'Custom Game', and then navigating to the map and selecting it.
It helps to have your video settings for Warcraft III set to high quality, or some custom skins in some of the campaign might look a little... weird.

Difficulty:
-----------

To the Bitter End is supposed to be very difficult. However, for those finding it simply too tough, as of version 0.7.04, I have added in variable difficulty levels. Once in-game, press Enter to bring up the chat window, then type in "easy", "medium" or "hard" (without quotation marks) to change the difficulty of the current Chapter. The default difficulty is "hard". Note that the only thing this modifies is the HP of enemy units, and enemy hero units are less affected than normal units are.

Remember though: real heroes play on hard!

Other Notes:
------------

For further info and an extensive manual, check the 'official site' at www.familykrieg.com/tothebitterend

This is the fourth of a series beta releases, it is suggested you play this one after Chapter III: Juggernaut and before Chapter V: Reunion.

The other releases in the series thus far are:
Chapter I: Dark Dawn
Chapter II: The Dream of Blood
Chapter III: Juggernaut
Chapter V: Reunion
Chapter VI: Harbingers of War
Chapter VII: Grim Harvest
They can all be found at the official site at http://www.familykrieg.com/tothebitterend/.

To check the version number of any of your TTBE maps, type "version" (without quotation marks) into the chat text in-game and it will display (or if nothing displays, then your version is definitely out-of-date). The newest versions are always available on the official site.

Although I am solely responsible for creating this map, the central characters featured in this campaign, as well as the Multiverse in which it is set, were envisaged by the writers at The Administorum (http://theadministorum.yuku.com/) and its newest incarnation, the Administorum 2.0 (http://nerdramblingz.com/starforums/index.php).

This was my first serious attempt at a campaign map, and my first release. I was going to wait until I had completed the campaign in its entirety before releasing anything, but at the request of one of my Administorum friends, I decided to release the completed Chapters here. Since the campaign itself not complete, this classifies the maps as beta releases. Unfortunately, with all my current commitments, it may be some time before I get all the maps done.

Some known bugs or issues (with suggested workarounds):
-------------------------------------------------------

- Does not automatically start Chapter V: Reunion on completion. (Workaround: start it manually - your characters from Heart of Ice should transfer into it fine.)
- Some of the characters' textures look strange. (Solution: set the texture quality in the video settings to the highest available setting).

A word on cinematics:
---------------------

- It is possible to skip any of the cinematics, just press ESC.
- One 'bug' that occurs if you skip the cinematics is that any items or abilities that might have 'cooled down' and become available over the course of the cinematic will now not do this. This means that if you want to use those items/abilities often, you may have to wait around more... and if there's a timer counting down while you wait, that might not be advisable. This isn't a major thing, but it does mean that the game might be more difficult if you skip the cinematics.
- You are advised to watch the cinematics at least once. They will often give you instructions as to what to do next and offer clues as to what to expect. Making sense of the game plot without them would be pretty difficult.
- If you want to be sure to experience the game how it was meant to be played, then don't skip the cinematics. That's how I planned the level out and how I spent the most time testing it.

Hints/Notes:
------------

- You can play this map even if you haven't completed Dark Dawn, The Dream of Blood or Juggernaut. You'll start with a hero with an appropriate Experience level and unused skill points that you can spend as you see fit. But only Morganem's lackeys would play Chapter IV without completing Chapter I, II and III first, and surely you aren't one of them?
- Use your quest log if unsure of what to do next... that's what it's there for.
- Read the tooltips if you want to know what an ability or item does. In fact, this is strongly recommended.
- Your items are re-usable. However, they have long cooldown times. Save them for when you need them, and then unleash hell.
- Your items are powerful, but by now your abilities are just as intimidating. Especially your ultimates.
- Sphere of Annihilation and Cataclysm are appropriately named, because they will pretty much obliterate ANYTHING in the target area. That includes things you might prefer to keep un-obliterated, such as yourself.
- When you gain a level but your skill points don't seem to have increased... well, it's probably because your 'basic' skill has levelled up automatically. Don't worry, it's a point well spent.
- To begin with, your newest character will be weak and unable to use his abilities. It may be best not to distribute his skill points until you can actually test the abilities out for yourself and find what you like.
- The new character is very vulnerable at first. Protect him at all costs! Do not move to far from him or he may be attacked at the worst possible moment.
- The first half of your quest can be very arduous, as you will be attacked regularly by small waves of enemies. Try to rest only just after fighting off a wave, or you may find yourself sleeping at the worst possible time... but don't waste too much time resting, or you may start being overwhelmed.
- You will not reach your maximum experience level in Chapter IV. Obviously.
- Your quest will have you fighting some of the most horrific enemies you've faced so far. SAVE OFTEN.
- Don't expect to find Raziel from the Legacy of Kain series in this game. I've been using the name Soul Reaver for my RPG alter-ego since long before even the first Blood Omen came out. The Soul Reaver in this map is an original character.

Storyline FAQ:
--------------

Q: What's a 'Tirthandara'?
A: They are a cold-blooded, desert-dwelling warrior race. They fight using raw physical strength and shamanic magic focussed through their tattoos. They can control sand in many different ways in order to attack their enemies.

Q: How did Kitharsis know what the tentacled things were called?
A: He remembers it from when the companions attacked Morganem's fortress (this happened before Chapter I... it will be shown in the Prelude cinematic once I complete that).

Q: I don't get the plot. This is really confusing.
A: Have patience. Things will develop over time.

Q: Wait, wasn't there once a character called 'Clutchfiend'? Why is he called 'Cameron Aileron' now?
A: Ah, retcons, the bane of my existence. The guy who invented the character of Clutchfiend recently retconned his background (and name). Since I liked the changes he made though, I incorporated them into To the Bitter End. Thus, all references to 'Clutchfiend' have been changed to 'Cameron Aileron' from version 0.7.04 onwards.

Q: What's the name of that cool song you used for this map?
A: "Nineveh", by "ES Posthumus". Buy the album, it's worth it.

rex4: I don't really think TTBE is suited to that sort of play... I mean, can you imagine how annoying it would be to put up with spells like Sphere of Annihilation (which hit team-mates!) if you can't micro all the heroes at once? Plus it would require a huge amount of additional work to turn it into a multiplayer game...

kryptosuper: Well, Chapter III doesn't automatically load Chapter IV if that's what you mean. If you mean that your heroes aren't transferring over, just make sure all the maps are in the same folder on your computer, that should probably do the trick.

Hi Rodny: No, sorry, unfortunately Chapter VIII isn't done yet - it's quite a bit of work and I haven't had as much time to work on it as I would have liked recently. This is just a small update (includes version numbers in the maps, as well as a minor bugfix and spelling correction).

And Quellquun is right - Chapter VII is the latest to have been released.

This map could easily be one of the hardest I've ever played. Those Void Children have so insanely powerful buffs that they can eviscerate you in seconds. Not to mention how the bastards always target Kitharsis... But I'm going to try as hard as I can to complete this map, because this (as well as the other TTBE maps) is one of the best and most challenging maps I've played in my life. Btw +rep, you definitely deserve more of it for all those maps you've made. Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much Rainmaker, I appreciate the comments and rep. :)

And yes, the Void Children do tend to target Kitharsis. During the first part of the map, slow and steady is the only way to go. Advance only when it's safe, rest between battles if you need to, and make sure you have a rearguard in place at all times in case of ambushes. At least I can assure you that it IS possible (though difficult) to win. Good luck!

Oh, and don't forget about Soul Reaver's anti-magic amulet - it can really help against those buffs, and it costs no mana to use!

I have begun playing this series too and I find it awesome, though I have a lot of trouble beating the last Void Children in this map, even on easy-difficulty. Anyways +rep and 5/5 :D

Do you mean the Void Children guarding the Void Growth before you fight the Void Growth itself?

It helps if you retreat a bit before fighting them. Part of the reason they're so hard to beat is because the Void Growth has an aura that further buffs up the Void Children near it. If you can retreat back a little, closer to the fork in the path a little to the North, they'll be out of range of that aura. The aura looks like a purple star in a circle around the feet of the affected units, so when that's gone, you know they're out of range.

Other than that, I'd suggest using Sphere of Annihilation, Catalysm or Unbridled Rage against them. It'll make things a lot easer. Just don't accidentally get any of your own units caught in the area of effect if you use Sphere of Annihilation or Cataclysm - use Hold Position if you have to. Avoid using Celerity (because you'll end up dashing around too much rather than focusing your fire) or Sandstorm/Blood Corruption (since they're channeled you'll probably get creamed while you're forced to stand still)

Chapter IV is one of the hardest, but it's doable, honest! Good luck!

Actually I used to, after fighting all the Void Children down the road to the big one, retreat up to where the blight ends with all characters except Fei. Then activate the trigger in which more Void Children comes directly from the big one, with Fei. And then run up to the others (Fei has a fast run speed!), where I'll fight them together. Only sometimes I'll beat them anyways, and if I do so I can be 100% sure I'll lose to the big one... :-/

The Void Growth is somewhat tough, but you'll regain all your HP and MP before the fight - that means that the most important thing to maximize your chances of winning the battle is to ensure you haven't used up too many of your Ultimates beforehand! One or two is probably fine, more than that will start being problematic.

Just use everything you have with the exception of Celerity and Blooddrinker - if there are too many tentacles around these abilities will be counterproductive. Kill any Void Children that spawn but otherwise concentrate on the Void Growth. Keep an eye on your heroes to make sure they don't get surrounded by the tentacles (AoE abilities can usually clear them away pretty quick if needed) or teleported away. Also use Psychic Onslaught during this battle, it does wonders keeping the tentacles at bay.

I played these years ago when there were only a few maps, and thought they were great. Now I'm back, and have played through the first four.

Oh man! I had to reload a couple times on maps 1-3, but on this one...wow, I must have reloaded about 100 times to get all the way through. I let Kitharsis get too hurt near the beginning, and by the end right before I got to the camp I got overrun again and again. Finally I managed to make it through with a well placed Sphere of Annihilation on that last group Void Children that are patrolling back of forth, plus kind of "running the gauntlet" with summons sacrificed to keep groups of monsters at bay.

After I finally finally made it to the camp, the rest was a lot easier. I died once in the corridor on the way down to the bottom boss, but then beat the boss on my first try.

Veeeeeery fun map! Props! I'm a map maker myself and really appreciate how polished these maps are. The dialogue, cinematics, terrain, abilities, triggers, everything is professional quality.

I look forward to playing all the way through to map 7 in the days to come, and then the final part as well.
