Would look better if the "wrinkles" and the contours of the eyes were darker.
Maybe also resize it to 56x56 so the whole image is inside the borders? That way there would be a bit more room for the black background, giving the image some more room to breathe.
I would also suggest making the shadow at the top left a bit darker.

Doing it by hand, like any artist. Kinda defeats the purpose of remastering, if you just run it through AI. Working in SAI2 ever since I've learned about its existence. In case anyone wants to know more about how I do things, here's a raw file..
