I plan to remove the paladin's hammer and replace it with a trident, but need help on how to go about it.

I'll likely have to do similar weapon swaps with other heros, so any help will be appreciated.

Weapons are part of the model. You have to edit the Model using some software. Is not hard, but you have to spend the time to learn how it works.

I forgot the program's name :$

There are some models with no weapon. Unless you find such models, you can take advantage of this tutorial: http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/3d-modeling-tutorials-282/basic-weapon-removal-31486/

In order to add a weapon in-game, you can use the Sphere ability and Hand,Left or Hand,Right (or both) as attachment points. Don't forget about this tutorial, in case you want to know what attachment points exist: http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/general-mapping-tutorials-278/how-use-unit-attachments-149889/

I just realized that I've been basing my attachment abilities on Item Stat bonus spells, would basing them on Sphere save space?

It's the same. ;D
Wrong. Sphere ability can actually have a cooldown. Whenever a unit is issued to attack or cast spell, one of attachments is destroyed. After X seconds, where X is cooldown, the attachment is recreated. Also, when casting a spell, one attachment will be hurled upon point/target. This can be useful for some things, but I always avoid it, because of weird sounds and effects it can create.

To make the attachments not destroy-able, base your abilities off the "Life Regeneration Aura", and just set the "Art - Target" and attachments field. Don't forget to make the targets to "Self" only, and to remove regeneration.

You can use http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/tools-560/warcraft-iii-viewer-62878/ to find and extract the files from MPQs, and convert them, and then, just use Gimp or Photoshop to edit the textures. You can't open .BLP in those programs, and that's why you need to convert them with http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/tools-560/warcraft-iii-viewer-62878/.
