Did a quick Google and got this page. I actually didn't know that that field even existed before I saw this thread
Formation Rank basically controls where the unit goes in a group when you move (unless unit formation is turned off). That way you can set melee units to go up front, and ranged units to go down back.
The way it works is the lower the value, the closer to the front the unit goes. So you'd have melee units like Footmen set to 0, slightly ranged ones like Spell Breakers at 1, middle ranged like Riflemen at 2, long-ranged like Glaive Throwers at 3, and chicken units like Peasants at 4. You can set it higher (up to 9) but I don't know what it does, probably just sets them further back.
About changing this during gameplay (triggers), I don't think it's possible. It'd be cool though.
Unfortunately no. The closest thing I could find was this, but I don't think it's exactly what you want.
However if it is, remember it initially uses Custom Values, so you'll be better off replacing those with hashtables.
I might have another look later on though, after school. If I find anything I'll edit this post.
I think I've gathered enough info about the case. I was thinking making somekind of little system about this but it's not that necessary. The system was for a RPG.
