--Introduction--

Inspired by Norse mythology, Underworld takes the player into a game that requires wit and cunning to succeed in. Underworld takes place on a regular chessboard, eight times eight fields, but unlike its forefather, the two armies facing each other are vastly different. In this game, every mistake will have major repercussions upon the player, and those who give their turns little thought, will soon find themselves in a sea of their own blood. A multitude of additions are featured in the game, which adds more than one new layer of complexity on a game that is already considered by some to be a science and philosophy in its own right. Every piece in Underworld has its own health meter which means that, unlike in regular chess, a piece is not necessarily destroyed as soon as it is attacked. To deal with this, pieces have a variety of abilities and attacks to fight with. Some can petrify their foes, turning them to cold stone, others unleash vile poisons, raging flames and even ice that freezes the enemy solid. But not everything has changed. A classic move, namely, the transformation of the pawn into a different piece, is still featured in Underworld, with the exception that the Pawn will turn into a unique Veteran-piece, rather than having to choose between regular pieces. And, all the same, the goal is still to simply kill the enemy king.

Are you brave enough to venture into the Underworld, and face the great and sometimes horrifying legends of mythology? Steel your mind, and sharpen your wits; you will need both, for where you are headed to, sword and courage are not enough.

--Features--

  • Intuitive Engine: Virtually everything in the game is controlled via simple left clicks on the desired fields. This makes for comfortable gameplay, removes any form of clutter and it simply feels more professional than using dummy abilities.

  • Dark Atmosphere: The board, which consists of 64 translucent fields, hovers above a sea of dark water. A custom light source illuminates the central area of the board, while shadows encroach on the edges of the playfield.

  • Multiple Races: Version 1.0 features only a single race, the Cursed Wretches, but more races are planned for future versions. Staying close to Norse mythology, the ultimate goal would be 9 races, each representative for one of the nine worlds. We do not promise that this goal will be reached any time soon, if at all, but we are working on the second race; the concept is already written, and scripting is in process.

--Cursed Wretches--

These creatures dwell in a sunken, forgotten world, devoid of all light and warmth. Just like this world of theirs is cold and dark, so too have their hearts grown black and poisonous. The Cursed Wretches excel at poisoning and petrifying entire armies; only to abuse their enemies' weakened state to drag them into the dark depths. In some cases, they are even capable of producing a Shapeless, distorted and disgusting blasphemies that can easily conjure the wrath of their dark gods upon any who dare to oppose.

This section is dedicated to the PDF that nobody would download. To make life easier (in my eyes, harder) for those that did not like the old way, I have now uploaded every single page as an image file for you to see right here on this page.

I wasn't aware that I was supposed to turn a description into an art project. :O Sarcasm aside, if you want all that good stuff (colors, images), then you could check out the PDF file I have included in the description. It features an image for every single unit to portray its movement pattern, as well as a team-shot for the Cursed Wretches. Since I went through the effort to create said PDF file, and since it would take quite a lot of room, I thought I wouldn't add it in the description. Boxes and tables might overdo it (I don't see any practical use for it here), and as far as a video goes, well, that's something for the future (if at all) I believe. I may add some screenshots if you guys like, but that will have to wait until I can play another game with someone to actually take them in. I fully agree on your thoughts for the map preview image, it's just that I'm not able to create one, and we didn't bother to see towards making one either yet, seeing as we wanted to make the map playable and fun first. Regardless, it's on the to-do list, and Underworld eventually gets one. For now, we wanted to upload the map and get some feedback on it, see if other people enjoy it as much as we do, you know, all that good stuff.

Which brings me to the point: I would really love some feedback on the actual map, rather than its description. I appreciate the criticism on the description, and I'm going to work to improve it, rest assured, but the primary point for uploading Underworld was to actually get opinions on the map.

Thanks everyone so far.

I wasn't aware that I was supposed to turn a description into an art project.

What kobas mention was merely a bonus to make your map thread much impressive and intriguing to the public. The actual top priority was to have a description with proper structure as that is the main rules of map submissions.

As far as I seen from the current description, it certainly was acceptable as it was well organize.

then you could check out the PDF file I have included in the description.

Nobody going to download the files just to view it considering they could directly download the map to seen it. If they want a direct view, they prefer to view it at the site right away.

Boxes and tables might overdo it (I don't see any practical use for it here),

They are useful especially for changelog or crediting list, as for screenshot it would be hidden tag. You just got to know the right way to use it.

This map section are not section to get feedback. If you want feedback, you should use map development section. This section are reserve only for complete work (Beta stage map which had everything being implement (But could use more additional feature) and have the bug/error issues. at extremely minimal/none level)

More than 6 hours and barely 15 download is a clear sign why people should not upload their alpha stage map for feedback.

Rating this map 5/5 for being innovating and refreshing.
The gameplay might be a little hard to grasp unless you want to read all the text, but every takes a bit time to learn anyway.
Just by looking at the game you can also see alot of thought and time was put into making Underworld.

edit: Not to mention presented in a formal and professional manner, gj.

How come this is not known by more people? I sense so much potential on this map ;D

I already tough about a lot of things to update. Map could be a little bit less darker, and of course, should have an "Quest list" with info about the map. Battle net players would need it :)
Those were a couple, i can think of a lot more.

Nonetheless your idea is really awesome =D
