Lotr Troll Pack

This bundle is marked as high quality. It exceeds standards and is highly desirable.
"Over here you over-sized sack of stone! Khazâd ai-mênu!"
- Gimli, after witnessing the death of Tvistur

Recommended Object Editor thing to sync damage with animations
Combat - Attack 1 - Animation Backswing Point: 0.300
Combat - Attack 1 - Animation Damage Point: 0.700

Note*
All of the skins can be easily swapped around in Magos' model editor or Retera's Model Studio if there's a variant you'd like but isn't in here.
To any aspiring texture artists out there, could you use your skills and help fix the seam on the Snow Troll's back? It was slowly driving me insane, but I refused to put off uploading this pack for another week just over that.
You can re-paint the skin as you see fit; as long as you colour within the lines, it'll wrap perfectly - good luck to ye :)
You could probably make a WoW-style Dire Troll or Dire Orc, idk.

Oh yeah, these are based on the LotrO Trolls, 'cuz those are the best and I said so.

Keywords: Troll, Cave, Mountain, Deep, Lord, Of, The, Rings, War, Ring, Lotr, Olog, Balt, Jarn, Iron, Fell, Armoured, Armored, Chaos, Fel, Snow, Frost, Trolls, Hill, Drummer, Drum

This pack includes:
- Cave Troll
- Troll Taskmaster (Armoured Cavetroll)
- Fell Troll (Red-skinned Taskmaster Troll)
- Mountain Troll
- War Troll (Armoured Mountain Troll)
- Drummer Troll (Mountain Troll w/ Drums)
- Snow Troll (Troll covered in white fur)

Changes
- Remembered to add an in-game screenshot
- Tweaked Cave-Troll's armpit wrap (No longer displays the helmet texture)
- Taskmaster variant added to the pack (Thanks to Lord-of-Tuk & Xelos for pointing out it's absence)
- Fixed War Troll's elbow (Thanks to 1_Freon_1 for pointing it out)
- All Trolls now have a Stomp animation
- All Trolls now pass the Sanity Checker

Crush, smash! 🤜 An amazing addition to the LOTR universe 👍 The Death Alternate is really cool. After a hard animation it's really nice to have such a relaxing Decay Flesh Alternate 😀
By the way, you have two variations of maces in your screenshots. You just have settled on the best in your opinion?
I had some screenshots from LotrO for another club, but decided it looked too similar to the first one (Smooth club with two metal bands)

I might end up replacing the Fell Troll's club with a warhammer or War of the Ring-style Pick-hammer

If someone has some screenshots for weapon suggestions or additions to the armour (Skull or Flag racks, Torn off gate shields, etc) I'll check 'em out and maybe update the pack

But for the classic unarmoured trolls, I'd like to keep them with the smooth clubs out of Nostalgia for their appearances in LotrO (2007)
  • The Snow Troll who broke down the gates of Edhelion
  • The Mountain Troll who smashed Tvistur in the Silverdeep Mine
  • The Cave Troll who the orcs of Isengard unleashed on Weathertop as a last resort

Oh, this a dangerous statement 😆

I remember some trolls from the Battle for Middle-Earth 2, it's also a game though. But out of respect, I must say that they did a great job of recreating the atmosphere of the movie universe. When creating a character you can pick different armor pieces and weapons for trolls; here are some variations:
HillTrolls.png

According to the lore, these are Olog-hai who are an advanced breed of trolls that are intelligent and able to move under the Sun. They appeared in the last days of the War of the Ring in Saurons's service in Middle-Earth.

Goblins use Cave trolls (from Moria) as brute force, they throw boulders or bear clubs, and these trolls can also be tamed:
Cavetroll.png

Your trolls have an Attack Alternate animation. Is it also used for throwing rocks or just for punching?

But this one is a Hill troll that hails from swampy lands near Rhudaur and Angmar, lol:
HillTrollThrower.png

It's a bit bigger than the previous guy, has armor and... some sort of clothes?

And here we have 3 types of trolls, in ascending order of size: Cave, Hill and Olog-hai:
images.jpg

A classy club, and some sort of giant Mumak bones or huge logs?

And this is a Mountain Giant used by Goblins and Sauron:
MountainGiant.png

It can throw rocks, attack with fists and use an AoE stomp. First appears in BFME 2 and is compared to an ent in terms of strength. The origin is uknown.

And here's a snow troll Rogash from BFME I, an Angmar warrior:
SnowTrollRogash.png

He and his brother trolls were green-skinned and they carried pike-hammers.

There are too many variations even without the constructor of charachters from the game. That was my attempt to sort out the lore things and in no way I am calling for the creation of new types of armor and weapons, I just wanted to share some nostalgic memories 🙂 I wonder if you played BFME 2?

@Villagerino yee, I played Battle for Middle-earth 1 religiously as a kid, I wasn't blown away by BFME2 though (I hear it turned out to be more popular though)

For Attack Two, yep, it's for hurling rocks! :D
Originally I was going to include an alternate set of animations, unarmed and with rock-throwing animations or unarmed swings that could pass for such; but I don't have a consistent way of duplicating animations without breaking particle emitters and footprints, and you wouldn't believe the effort that went into the sneeze or death animations.

If someone has a good tool for it, it might still happen - I like these trolls

In LotrO, there are many, many breeds of trolls, but only two fighting types:
  • Crushers (Sometimes armoured, and often wielding great clubs)
  • Rock Heavers (skittish, unarmoured trolls who tend to fall back and hurl stones from a distance)

As for the breeds, there are:
  • Stone Trolls (Dumpy giant-men looking things)
  • Cave Trolls (Classic grey boys)
  • Mountain Trolls (Brown skinned trolls with fur)
  • Snow Trolls (Pale trolls covered in white fur)
  • Deep Trolls (Hulking, rocky, green skinned trolls with no toes and clawed hands)
  • Fell Trolls (Red skinned trolls with black war-paint)
  • Dire Trolls (Grey-black skinned trolls with white war-ash)
  • Hill Trolls (Upright standing rocky-hide creatures with broad shoulders and wide mouths)
  • Wood Trolls (Horrifying gangly humanoids suspended in a net of root-like limbs)
  • Jarn-olog (Iron Trolls, a profoundly stupid but strong breed)
  • Curr-olog (Forest Trolls, covered in bark-like hide)
  • Balt-olog (Marsh Trolls, covered in moss and using the bog to hide)
  • Gorthorog (Gertheryg plural)

For BFME-style stuff, I'm going to be making a pack of Ents sometime, and probably the Olog-hai War Troll, since it's a classic with the horned helm and spiked club. I'm also going to be updating the Uruk Pack for the 1900th time with some more movie-themed White-hand Uruks

Yeah, the second one is better especially with a tactic map mode where you need to move forces, then play RTS to conquer the Middle-Earth region by region, and it feels like you are in the movie 🤓

As for the animations, I almost feel your pain 🙂 The Death Alternate is incredible and the Stand-2 is also amazing. By the way, in case they get broken I just copy the existing timings of emitters in Magos before I add an animation via Retera 🤔 Or I might missunderstand your problem.

That's crazy, man 👍

@Deolrin, not the trolls that you expected! 😃

Still play the bfme games on and off with friends over the years, and this reminded me of the freezing rain power or the tank everyone's fps power and your friends now want to murder you power.

When I've got the energy, I'm going to update the pack so all of the trolls will have a Stomp animation

Just finished animating the Cave-troll, all I've got to do now is geo-merge the other 5 variants onto it's skeleton
Consider using RMS to transfer the new animation(s) to the other models.
There are tutorials on Retera's YouTube channel, or you can ask for help from any of the folks actively using it (sadly I am somewhat of an amateur at the moment, need to refresh my skills and cannot be of great help).
You can also hop onto Retera's Discord channel and get help there.
It's significantly faster and easier than what you proposed.

I'm not familiar with the meme, I live under a rock :peasant-smile:
In the strategy "Battle for Middle-earth - The Rise of the Witch-king", Rogash has a jump skill, when landing he throws enemies in different directions. And there was a meme about it, there was a picture used in which a fat woman falls, and a thin man catches her. And there they put the head of a Rogash to a woman, and the head of an Arnor infantryman to a man. But along the way it was a local meme...

do you have plans to make dwarven units like the ones in the Hobbit movie?
Yep :)
The Dagran Thaurissan model is going to serve as the basemodel for the Dwarf pack

I want to make:
  • Dwarf Miner (Lantern helmet, big mining pack, bigger beard)
  • Dwarf Vanguard (Heavy Iron-hills spear & shield infantry)
  • Zhelruka Dwarf (Basically a short dismounted Druzhina with a HUGE mustache)

  • Dwalin (Greathammer dwarf with leather armour and hero glow)
  • Dain Ironfoot II (Boar-rider wielding the Red Axe of Erebor)
  • Gloin (Old dwarf in a TC robe & pauldrons with a greataxe)
  • Durin the Deathless (Inspired by LotrO's Durin VII)
  • Skorgrim Dourhand (Dwarf with a horned helmet, red cape, greathammer and glowing green eyes)

  • Rune-keeper (Dwarf in a robe with a Rune-hammer and Runestone)
  • Raven-caller (Dwarf in a robe with a lantern Staff and Mace)

looking forward for this!!!

It will be nice to have ram riders, ballista and that war machine with an automatic crossbow as well shown in the extended edition of the film.

More dwarfs the better and without hero glow (just do not like it distracts from art of the unit imo) and Do you have any frost dwarfs It seems I can find bronzebeards dark beards wildhammer dark iron but no frost dwarfs tho without hero glow ?
