Silent Memory

This bundle is marked as useful / simple. Simplicity is bliss, low effort and/or may contain minor bugs.
ATTENTION!!!

PLEASE SET THE MUSIC VOLUME TO 100% AND MAKE SURE YOUR SPEAKERS ARE NICE AND LOUD!!!

The music isn't quite as loud as it should be, and this cinematic is all about the music :).

Anyways here's some info about this cinematic. It was just a tiny project I decided to put together and publish. All in all it took me about 8 hours from staring at a blank map, all through terraining and triggering, past mixing the music and sound effects all the way to the finished cinematic. The main reason I did it was I had a few ideas for the cinematic and I have also never published any of my cinematics before. I've made MANY cinematics, but never published them or showed them to others. Most of them just went by the wayside, lost or deleted. But finally, I decided I should make and publish at least ONE of my projects, even if it is fairly late :p.

So that's where this map stemmed from, it's a quick little cutscene which demonstrates the importance of atmosphere and how vital things like sound, music, sky and lighting are. There are no characters, it is simply an atmopsheric work.

It involves a village, once happy and functional, which harboured a dark secret. The evil from the secret eventually started affecting the town, creeping up from the darkness to poison and pollute the village and its people. With its nature amplified, it extended through the town, evil and powerful, and upturned the place, plunging it into blackness. Now, only echoes and blood stains remain, serving as reminders of the evil that overtook this simple village. Want specifics? Watch the cinematic and figure itout for yourself ;).

And I'm sorry for the size of the map, the background music and sound effects are vital and large. But I tried to compact it as much as possible, hopefully you'll download it and find it worth the megabytes :).

Feel free to give me feedback, constructive criticism is fine too. But please nothing stupid like "so boring, where are the characters? There's no story!" I'll just ignore them haha. Watch it and think before commenting, it's not meant to be an epic tale of brave knights fighting waves of ghouls to rescue some damsel in distress. It's aimed at being a simple yet powerful piece with a deep tone and a mood of isolation. And remember that this was just a quick little project of mine, there will probably be a million little things you can knit-pick about so dw I am aware of most of them I know it's far from perfect, I just decided to get it out there :D.

Oh and I know I used custom units instead of custom doodads for some of the objects in the editor. Why? Sometimes I wanted them to have unit properties, sometimes I wanted to change their animation speed etc. But the bottom line is, I just wasn't thinking haha. It has been a while since I made a cinematic, or even used the World Editor and I was doing things fairly quickly, focusing more on the end result rather than the little details hehe :). So dw, I'm aware of that too

Enjoy!!

EDIT: Added a minimap preview image

EDIT: Reduced size greatly by cutting down audio quality. Noticeable quality decrease but I guess for convenience it's better

Yeah I wasn't sure how to add the minimap preview image, I'll look into it and update sometime

Fail cinematic with 9.321 KB mp3 file...
I will post full review letter today, but I fear it will be rejection from me!

Yeah I already explained, it's all the music and sound effects, with lowest file size I could manage. And the music is an integral part of it, I didn't wanna majorly reduce the audio quality just to make it smaller, that's the point of the whole cinematic. Read the description first. I'm well aware that it has a very large audio import, sorry I couldn't reasonably reduce it much more

Ok let see... Silent Memory

Things that I like:

Things that I don't like:

1st - Well map description looks really boring
2nd - Terrain is really poor
3th - No fog, sky, lightning effects
4th - Whole cinematic is about music and moving camera with fade filters
5th - If we forget about spiders there is no living being in video
6th - Map size is large (music you use: *check hidden tag below)
7th - Cinematic is very boring, there is nothing special about it

Word or 2 to Author:

Why not to add some pictures, resize some words, add color to map description!
Improve terrain, add more tiles, use imported trees instead of blizzard ones! There is no sky, we can't see fog, some doodads are floating above ground, grrrr.

Here check this one to improve description: Click and this one also: Click again

I will give you 1/5 mark and must vote for rejection and report map to moderator!
But here are some links again! If map isn't finished jet, use Map Development forum for that! You can make thread there upload your map so people can tell you what they think just like here! Also for any help with triggers or how to clean memory leaks post triggers and create threads here Triggers & Scripts! Btw if you need any help with WE we have World Editor Help Zone here on THW! And at the end if you need any resource from icons to loading screens check this out Requests!

So don't worry, when you finish your map just update this one and ask moderator to unlock it so people can leave comments etc etc!

HAHA well you completely missed the whole point of this cinematic so sorry, I can't really respond to your comment Kobas, though I'll try. But at least you took the time to watch and rate, so that's something I guess :p.

Things like "map description is boring; terrain is poor; cinematic is very boring" isn't helpful, if you want to go to the effort to review then use some CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, otherwise there's no point at all. As of now (ignoring the fact that it's totally misguided), your review is essentially useless to me

And please read the description before posting I even said "Feel free to give me feedback, constructive criticism is fine too. But please nothing stupid like "so boring, where are the characters? There's no story!" " and then you post

4th - Whole cinematic is about music and moving camera with fade filters
5th - If we forget about spiders there is no living being in video

Think before you post. And not every cinematic has to have a fight or be full of protagonists to be interesting, that's a overused, immature and sterotypical view. How many cinematics are there on this website like that? Including even yours. You gotta be a little more open minded :p. Don't throw mood, atmosphere and all that to the wind for another boring, unimmersive fight scene between some Human hero and some Undead hero. *yawn* it couldn't be more uninteresting

So yeah, I appreciate the effort but I feel the cinematic's tone is wasted on you. Each to their own :).

4th - Whole cinematic is about music and moving camera with fade filters
Well I want to see something unique, special, some special and lightning effects!

Example: Wind can open Graveyard Gate, then play some scary sound or something, create special effect there!

5th - If we forget about spiders there is no living being in video
No birds, neutral passive units etc etc

Example: Same thing you can create crows on graveyard, rats etc etc! You can place 2 or 3 bats doodads there also! Storm or rain can add epic effects, thunder with fade filter, sound and custom model can look awesome 2!

Well maybe you now understand a little what I wanted to say...

Haha now THAT'S more like it :D.

Yeah I tried to open the gate but with that model, once you start playing one of its animations it just keept repeating it continually and I couldn't find a way to stop it -_- although yeah i get your point

And for 5th that's true there could be more, although I was going for more isolation and desolation rather than just "spooky" with crows and bats and spider and stuff, they're used a little too much as well. But true, I'll look into some custom neutral models to add to the enviroment :).

Btw, the fog IS the darkness, so that covers fog AND lighting too. As for the sky, I set it to a Felwood one, not sure why it's acting up. I'll check that too

Well create destructible (same for unit) and use
  • Actions
    • Animation - Play (Picked destructible)'s selfdestrution animation
    • -------- Next one will play animation when first one is finished = It will stop first one with it! --------
    • Animation - Queue (Last created destructible)'s dead animation
Well maybe not the best explanation but it will work!
Ofc replace "Picked destructible" with your own, and selfdestrution/dead with real animations ^^

Hmmm. . . It was very like. . . you need to think a lot about this cinematic. It would be good horror cinematic begining.

Good to see some otherkind of cinematic, what was very deep sense. Especially i liked the scene, where there was a hanging head.

One tip:

At the first scene where you showed the path, i suggest you should make trees bigger, it will look more real then and use the max and min size too, then woods are different size and it will again make it look more real.
Also you should use other tree models, it makes it look cooler(Thats the one thing i didnt understand. You have many models, but no tree modles?).

I give it 7/10, i liked to see something new.

Yeah I definitely could've put more into the terrain, if I can be bothered I'm gonna make one more GOOD quality cutscene before Starcraft 2 (and its delicious Galaxy Editor) officially come out, though probably not I'm just gonna wait

And sorry you didn't enjoy it millzy, I'm expecting some people to like and some to hate. Everyone is different :). Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback guys!

The terrain is way too bland and - in my opinion - doesn't really 'fit' the type of cinematic, it would've been a far better choice to choose grass with a darker tint (such as the Dalaran Ruins grass, or in fact the entire tileset).
You went through some doodads (try to avoid this at all costs!), the cave with the cliffs surrounding it looked unreal... a blocky cave with some strangely layered grassy cliffs beside it and some trees and ruined walls on top of those cliffs.

The tileset is very boring: mostly grass... light grass, scattered with trees.
The burning houses were mehh, we've all seen stuff like that before - only better (and I couldn't help but notice how strangely placed the houses were, that can't be an actual city/village).

The camera transition was good the first time you used it, and maybe the second time.
But after hundreds of fade in/outs, I really had enough of it.

At one point in the cinematic, you suddenly jumped from all kinds of medieval stuff to a modern building (or at least the ruins of it).
What's the point of that?
Concrete, reinforced with steel wire didn't exist back then I believe, or everything else should be changed.
