Hurtgen Forest

Hurtgen Forest is a modern warfare map inspired by other RTS games such as Company Of Heroes and Command and Conquer. It's a 1v1 map, and the objective is destroying the enemy base, using custom units: infantry, armored vehicles, tanks and aircraft, as well as strategy.

The map has 2 factions: Allies and Germans (Wehrmacht). Both are fully playable with somewhat similar tech trees and progression. The main difference lies with the units and upgrades, which are supposed to encourage different strategies and playstyles at different points in the game. As far as balance goes, I can say nothing is overpowered (as always however, close attention should be paid to aircraft, particularly fighters - the respective AA vehicles (M16MGMC and SdKfz 222) of each faction are questionable at best in their ability to stop mass air attacks; long story short, if you want to counter enemy air power you need an air force of your own). I'm actively trying to further tune the stats of all units but I believe I've reached a good spot in the balance, and only a lot of playing can reveal other strengths and weaknesses now.

Another area of research are abilities for units, which would make gameplay somewhat more interesting. Combat is very fast (at least between infantry, and between aircraft) which barely leaves room for micro-managing. For example, the Ranger's grenade ability is not supposed to be an 'infantry-clearing' tool, but rather an anti-building tool for when pitted against a machine-gun nest or something. Same goes for the Fighter's rocket ability.

The map terrain is pretty simple as I am not an experienced terrainer (gravitating more towards the noob side), but it has symmetry which is all I aimed for. I also added some Command and Conquer music since it's cool.

Adapted for 1.31 using Map Adapter So bear with me if there are some issues present that might not be on 1.32+.
  1. Outpost says drop off for lumber and gold.
  2. You can capture Supply Stashes.
  3. Basically you've replaced lumber with ore but it's technically the same thing. It's still the Warcraft III type of resource gathering.
  4. Most icons don't have DIBTNs and look like green squares during game pause or when not yet available. Learn about icons:

  5. There is no direct encounter possibility. Players have to go through neutral hostile units first.
  6. Some units have the same icons.
  7. Units and buildings are not from the same age. They look weird together. It's not something that you can easily change though.
  8. Morphine has no hotkey.
  9. Workers don't have any resource carrying animations and they shoot when mining.
  10. When researching Endurance Training, Air Force General gets its place. Properly position icons.
  11. Armoured Car's icon is broken; it basically looks like the model's skin.
  12. Bazooka is a weapon not a trooper name.
  13. Bazooka's icon is used for an upgrade and also for the vs. Tank attack type. Try differentiating icons.
  14. Small Caliber Gun doesn't have an icon border like most attack and armour type icons. You can add one or remove the one on the others with the Button Manager I linked earlier.
  15. Mount Autoloader's icon=Small Caliber Gun's=Fire Fighter's. Add On Armour's with Light Armour and Light Tank's. Repair's=Full Mobilization's. List goes on.
  16. AT Gun doesn't have a model/texture. Possibly a patch version difference issue.
  17. Tank Regiment's model=Oil Refinery's.
  18. The problem with the terrain is that it's very cluttered and that there are narrow paths which along with Warcraft III's pathing make for an annoying experience.
  19. Love the turn rate for tanks. Pretty realistic.
  20. Well, planes are hard to code to seem realistic. Right now, they're just Warcraft III air units.
  21. You could add glow to heroes: How to add Hero Glow without Modeling
  22. Tanks don't launch projectiles?
  23. Recon Flight has no hotkey.
  24. Do Refineries do the same as Supply Depots?
Generally, a nice map but needs some polish.

ADDITIONAL NECESSARY INFORMATION
  • A credits list in the map thread description is required where the names of the resource (models, skins, icons, spells, sound etc.) authors are mentioned along with the specific resource. It would be a luxury to have links leading to the used resources. Credits in the Quest Log would be appreciated too.
  • A detailed changelog in the first post would be helpful to reviewers and notify fans about the newest implementations to your map.
  • Map thread tags are important. Please use those that fit and not more or none.
