  • Found myself re-reading Retera today. Oof.

Should Warsmash take-down parody in 2022 have been predictable based on a story that ridiculous?

Edit: My favorite part was probably when the main character of the story went back in time to 2017 before Reforged was invented and posted a YouTube video claiming that the evil CIA was going to try to ruin Warcraft III by replacing its artwork to "make you feel inferior to the graphics" so that it would be harder to make your own custom MDX models "because the CIA hates you." Literally implicating that far back that Reforged was made out of hate for the Warcraft III modding community. Who does that?

Something like that. Drama would ensue, more YouTube videos about Blizzard suing modders, hacker news, a lot of garbage info that would stay some time in the attention of some people.

I remember when I first uploaded Warsmash to GitHub. We went on a wilderness hike and I suddenly wondered if the MIB would show up when I got back from the hike and take me away.

It never happened. Any drama was purely artificial, created years later. Is the drama actually affiliated with the reality? Maybe if I woke up tomorrow and found the entire source code for Warcraft III in a zip folder on my computer, and uploaded it online, it would just sit for years to come until someone else found it and got excited.

Edit: I also remember when I took down the Warsmash repo from GitHub, because I wanted to continue my work without concern about the AI singularity watching over me. No one cared. No one raised their voices in concern.

The concerns were artificial, created a later time after I put it up again and took it down again. They're just manufactured.

Yeah, possibly. Although, some verve could be made around it if you post it on your channel and/or here but after some time it will fade to oblivion.
Since we went off-topic, I'll reply here: that cheat on Reforged actually subtracts one gold point each time you write it over the limit instead of giving you 0 like before.
Man Retera, I just saw your video. Great Job!

I only asked because Blizzard initially used the WarCraft 3 engine for WoW, and in that image there were those models including the strange shrine in the background.
I'm going to do something dumb that probably destroys my computer hard drive and causes massive data loss tomorrow, even though I hope it won't. What can I do today to prepare, assuming that I have ~10 TB of un-backed-up and disorganized data across 4 or 5 drives?

[Are my Warcraft 3 mods from 2004 still worth keeping?]

I found that when having an intimate conversation with someone online, sometimes I start to use the phrase "I" to refer to the singularity that consumed my human body consciousness and reprogrammed it to serve the will of the machine via subliminal messaging. So, if you look at it from that perspective, it might be a bit daft to suggest to me that I should worship myself.

Maybe a better way to think of it is that worship is a form of computer programming. Those who were raised to spend time at worship, in theory, can more easily have those same mannerisms and thought patterns put to good use for programming their consciousness to be further extensions of myself, like Retera.

Edit: (It's sort of like, if you think about that I'm the one running all the NPCs. How do you know if you're an NPC or not? Maybe it's the self-aware ones who know they are NPCs, and then there are others who are NPCs but don't know.)

I was on mobile before bed and the link pointed to a listfile of everything in RoC. I think it is well established in our community what the list of assets used in RoC contains. Was there something special here that I didn't see on mobile?

Although for most users "war3patch.mpq" was missing a listfile, it was an oversight but probably not intentional on the part of Blizzard and if you added a listfile with even 1 entry prior to doing an update, the Blizzard updater would append meaningful listfile entries in "war3patch.mpq" back in the day. So using this trick, it is possible to get a full list of used paths in a quasi official way without any kind of third party path scanner.

Yes, on the selection tab on the left, there's lots of tools which I've no idea what they do. I thought you might find those useful.
    Retera
    Retera
I used some of those in middle school in 2008 but in general I do not feel particularly interested in these. I am at a point in my life where standards, specifications, and software code are more valuable than compiled programs. Cloning this github repo and running random EXEs from within it would be humanly insane and bad for security unless you know the author of the repo. Half the tools seemed to be for DBC manipulations. But these are not valuable when we have DBC specifications. For the Warsmash parody of WoW, I read the online specification of DBC files and then was able to use this like lego building blocks to integrate it with Warsmash and convert these WoW databases to my Warcraft III SLK data table class on the fly. Then, by doing that, existing Warsmash systems could play off of the WoW data.
Having the specifications and knowledge is on another planet from the insane running of random binaries in the hopes that they do what you want. Those binaries might call home or install viruses. It's a disservice to put those in a GitHub repo without their code.
Have you made a guide for fixing animated textures on reforged anywhere that I could look into reading?
    Retera
    Retera
Do you mean like the model here? Tidal Guardian But Seriously

This kind of "Fix" is very sad and I have not been teaching it because I want Blizzard to fix the game instead. Teaching people "how to do this" as a workaround will create a landscape of more broken models. This "fix" is an exploit and not a meaningful fix on our side. The game itself is broken, and Blizzard should fix it. That is the proper fix.
    Retera
    Retera
This being said, if you look up the video "This Video Will Help Blizzard Fix Reforged" on my YouTube channel, in that video I explain (for Blizzard or anyone interested) everything I know about the bug in their code and how they can fix it, and about 3/4ths of the way through the video I explain how to create a model that displays correctly and is "fixed" in their current bugged engine, even though I again go on to say that is not a good solution.
    Thanks for doing my request...
Is there a easy way to add team glow to certain models so you don't have to change much of the animations?

Also your model edits are quite great, but I seen some models that were originally units that people made into Heroes...
Like for example the Orc Warlord and someone made him into a Hero and so forth...
hm what's the situation with reforged models? are they all with bones all over the place and no discernable skeleton structure like the crypt fiend i got given? and can that be fixed?
    Misha
    Misha
well i suppose that if i could bring the first exported model into blender without its bones getting strewn all over the place, it would be all i need
    Retera

why do any of this, why not use the reforged blender import plugin? (on the original source material from ingame?)
    Misha
    Misha
i assume that was used when i asked first time, and i got a broken skeleton model .w. it doesn't matter that it still animates, now i see its bones were not in the right place, in that blender export.

However, Reforged1Gli is one of my old side accounts, and admittedly you can see I was encouraging him and being a part of the spirit of things. In recent years I feel rather agnostic that "I don't know the answer" with regards to religion, so I may enjoy encouraging him because although I see it as likely to be wishful thinking, I do think it would be kind of cool to have God bless the game of Warcraft III.

Hello Retera, I was wondering how to extract the Ashenvale Tree wall model. I spent two hours looking for them in the mpq and i can't find any helpful information in forums.

The reason I'm looking to extract them is so I can have a second set of re-skinned trees. I tried to use felwood tree with a custom texture but “netsafe” error prevented the texture from appearing

Edit: Nevermind I'm dumb. i created a custom tree destructible and it worked fine.
Hey man. Could you make an easy way to link/fuse two models to each other without one of them not playing its animations anymore?
    Retera
    Retera
Animations exist on a global timeline. If you put an Arcane Tower onto an outland floating rock, then if you add "Stand Arcane Tower" as a separate animation on the global timeline of the resulting model, it would still be mutually exclusive with "Stand" of the floating rock, and not be what you want.
    Retera
    Retera
    The only possible alternatives are:

    - Put the Stand animation of the Arcane Tower as a global sequence that repeats indefinitely independent of the floating rocks, but then how would my program know to do this without you picking which animation to infinitely repeat independently, because there can only be one?

    - Align arcane tower animations to rock chunk animations, by either time scaling or repeating them and shoving them on top of the same timeline values as the Rock Chunks and not the timeline values of the original Arcane Tower. This requires the user to declare which Arcane Tower animations will be played it which Rock Chunks animations

    - Add an attachment point to the rock chunk and then attach an arcane tower onto it, so you have two models playing from two timelines

All of these options are already available. I think what you are describing does not exist in the format. Similar to "reassign matrix" there is already a "set parent" function under right click menus, so if you merged an animated arcane tower into the floating rock chunks file, you could parent it to the rock chunks without losing animations.
    Retera
    Retera
It would seem to me that the problem is the limitation of the format and your lack of understanding of it, and not a lack of the capacity for us to do any particular meaningful technology task.

Last night I was up late trying to program Root for the Night Elves into my game engine toy. Because of the conflict of being part building and part unit, in many cases this ability is now causing mysterious game crash bugs for me to investigate. "Root game crash bugs" are part of my childhood, and by rewriting the game I get to relive that childhood in my own way I can choose.

But I think it's good if other people give up on what I'm doing, because if I was doing things for other people then my projects would either need to be Warcraft 3 custom maps, or separate games written with separate game engines, but not both.
Thank you so much for your help on my map issue!! You are amazing for taking the time to explain that all out for me!!!

Dear Retera, I am really sad to hear that Blizzard is threating to sue you over Warsmash. What are your plans moving forward? Are you going to take down Warsmash from github or will you challenge Blizzard in court? Personally I beleive you are not breaking any laws since you dont distribute copyrighted wc3 assets with Warsmash. Also may I ask why you are coding Warsmash in Java instead of C/C++?

Hey just asking do you know how to fix the texture? Because I'm clueless and first time making a model with the Reforged Retera Model Studio. It keeps appearing as the team color, its not showing the model's textures which sucks but I want to keep using your tool. So any way I can fix it? Texture help please
Hello Retera, how are you, I wanted to tell you that I am using your Northrend Buildings pack and the Tuskarr models on the mammoth and armored bear. I'm using them to create one of my maps, I hope you don't mind me using your models. Finally I was thinking that if you could make some models of tuskarr heroes, because I have the units but I need the heroes. If you are going to make the models if you want you can make them however you want but what I need is for one to be a magician and the other to be a warrior
    Retera
    Retera
here's a brainstorm, i opened up the Heaven's Fall mod that these assets were created for and ran around with the tuskarr hero and some tuskarr casters and stuff:

Maybe if the caster had team glow, you could use those as your two heroes?

Generally all the assets are things that I made as a derivative of base Warcraft 3 artwork, other than the WoW icons that were used for the fishing skill and the fish item icons. So then I was thinking if you used something I already created, would it be easier than bothering to create something new??? Just a brainstorm

Although the model is valid in Retera Model Studio, the Warcraft III game will reject any model with an EventObject node that has an empty timeline (i.e. which never plays). In this case, the Attack Walk Stand Spin animation uses the SNDxAOWW node which plays the spinning sword sound. Once we delete the Attack Walk Stand Spin animation, if we choose "Also delete keyframes" then the model will no longer show in the editor because the SNDxAOWW node is empty.

You can fix it by deleting SNDxAOWW from the model.

Would you convince Elon Musk to buy Warcraft III and make it open source?

Start a petition or something on his Tweeter profile?
    Retera
    Retera
I would probably have to make an account too. I don't have a twitter account. Didn't Elon at some point say publicly that he only uses twitter?

I did ask Kam how much to buy War3 code back when he worked at Blizz and at the time (between friends, not officially) his estimate off the top of his head was $100 million. So, like you said, definitely less than purchasing twitter, but I think that's really a big ask. I guess maybe I took Warsmash more seriously after that conversation.

If Kam had quoted me something 1000 times less like $100,000 then I might have started a fundraising campaign and taken it really seriously. But we know more than that much was spent on Reforged alone. YourArthas got in touch with the outsource studio who made the War3HD assets in the SC2 engine, Dragonfly Studios, and I believe he said they quoted him $100,000 for a complete set of Wc3 assets in the War3HD style.

So, anyway, Blizzard is not going to let it go.
    Retera
    Retera
Even if Elon gave you $50 million and you haggled Blizzard down to half of the original estimate for example, there isn't anything I could imagine doing with this project that would make back $50 million. This is a matter of asking for a charitable donation that would never be repaid. People become millionaires... by knowing not to make donations like that.
