Sticking to the original is always the best way to go IMO. Remember that Diablo 1 was designed with the idea in mind that it should be so easy to learn that your grandmother could play it. A difference in effects for armor types sounds like a really awesome system, but you also have to keep in mind that it would mean more work for development.
Warcraft 3 already has an armor system for damage types, so that might make it easier. Make every piece of armor equipped change your armor type? But I would personally air on the side of caution and just do it as original.
Going with the more simple, easier to implement option is also a very good idea if it's stalling development to try to figure it out.
