I've tried to get started with Unity a few times, but not had a great time... Almost felt like doing it from scratch would've been easier. I have done a few 2D games with C# + XNA (10 years ago) and Java + Slick 2D (also around 10 years ago) and both worked pretty good.
I felt like all Unity tutorials is setup to make unmaintainable code bases, so unsure if it's the engine or tutorials to blame
