Hi Retera, congratulations for all what you did. I have a little problem with Retera Model Studio, when I want to save my work on it, I can't find it anywhere, my work is just disapeared. Can you help with this problem plz ? Thank you very much

Assuming you create the simple TXT file OK and it doesn't need admin access like I said above, then you are probably thinking I am asking a basic question that did not fix anything. So here is my next test you can try: download some MDX from Hive and edit it with RMS and save to the existing file. A set of example steps for this might be:
    1. Go to this link (Militia with Footman Head)
    2. Click the download button at that link
    3. With the ZIP file from the download, unzip that file to a folder
    4. Open the Retera Model Studio
    5. Use "File -> Open" and choose the MDX file that you downloaded and unzipped
    6. It should show the militia with the footman head. Try to go into the "Edit" tab on Retera Model Studio and just click a bunch until you mess up the model. Maybe delete his head or scrunch his body with the drag and scale tools, or something so that it is really obvious you edited this file.
    7. Choose "File -> Save"
    8. Close the Retera Model Studio
    9. Open the Retera Model Studio again
    10. Use "File -> Open" on the militia with the footman head and tell me: do you see the messed up edits that you made in the edit tab or are they all reverted?

Thanks! I know it can be boring but hopefully these steps will help.

Also, what version of Windows are you using?

(Sorry for not responding I was busy XD) I tried The thing with the Militia with Footman head, I deleted his head, saved, closed and open the file again as you said. I can see my edits (deleted head)
Hello. I have an odd request for Retera's Model Studio. Is it possible if you could implement Orthographic view and an option to export animations as animated gif or separate frames? I'd like to use the pre-rendered gif in my own mod in Diablo 2.
And if it's not too much to ask, an ability to rotate viewport camera with keyboard, will be appreciate.

Thank you for reading and happy new year.

Hi. I got very lazy after the pandemic and stopped having time to update Retera Model Studio but because I published the entire program code online it was taken up by fans who created a heavily modified fanmade version. If you join the discord server in my signature and talk to the user twilac they might do it for you.

Orthographic was a 1 line change as I recall and Ive definitely seen builds of RMS that were orthographic. There's also a hack in the old 0.04 sourcecode for saving a bunch of png snapshots of the model at different angles but I never made a UI button for it and im not sure if the fan supported version they work on now still has that feature.

Anyway everything you're asking for is possible so if I don't do it for you, surely someone else can. Good luck.

Worst case if you're not a programmer and not adept at motivating programmers to work for you, you could try the free tool ScreenToGif. It has worked for me OK in the past.
Hi Retera! Is there any way I can keep up with what's happening in Warmash? The forum seems dead. If there are any new videos since my last post on your profile, I missed them!

For example, it would give an error saying "Unit 233 of Player 4 had 23 Hit Points on the server but 24 Hit Points locally!"
Hmm, why would this happen? Does it have anything to do with different CPU clock speeds or is it just really the network latency?
    Retera
    Retera
Usually for me it was the result of a programming error. For example I had a spell with bouncing lightning inspired by Farseer Chain Lightning on my old turn based game. In some versions of the game, the random number generator was inconsistent between PCs and so the lightning bounced differently per PC. So on PC 1 maybe the unit got hit by a bounce and on PC 2 it did not, or something. It only makes sense to even describe it in the context of a programming error. In a polished working system this shouldnt happen because the game simulation will be consistent between hardwares.

Edit: But as another example you can try having a unit who is not on a bridge attack a unit who is on a bridge in Patch 1.26. Make sure the unit on the bridge is at an XY coord above a cliff tansition such as from higher cliff down to water under the bridge. If the unit on the bridge is an illusion with evasion and one PC is in the Medium graphics mode but the other is in the High graphics mode or something, the evasion modifies the miss chance differently on the computer that knows it's an illusion, also by miss chance from "higher cliff to lower cliff" since bridge is not a cliff, so the attack misses on one computer and does not miss on the other computer and so the game ends with the "You were disconnected" message. Same idea.
    Retera
    Retera
Above I may have remembered the glitch incorrectly. Would only make sense if the guy on the bridge in the correct location was the attacker and the illusion&evasion unit was off of the bridge as the one getting attacked. That way the miss chance includes "shooting from lower ground to higher ground" which is when the game actually applies it... opposite of my other message.

But so you get the idea. They key is to create a glitch where one computer sees a different miss chance than the other computer for the same game session with the same inputs. That should be impossible but a programming error in the game sometimes makes it possible. It's not even a guarantee; I was only able to faithfully reproduce this particular case when using two exact machines in the same exact map configuratiom each time I hosted. There were some factors at play thay I had not totally determined.
Hi sir howdy, I love your tool, is really awesome, I was wondering If I can edit the normals of the models (sd) with it, I mean I didn't care about this before but now it seems to have a big impact in how the shadows works, 😁 thanks best wishes from Venezuela sir

Yes there is basic support for changing normals but if you need some advanced automated handling of this you may need something better. Basically I offer
1.) The rotate tool can be used on 1 vertex at a time for extremely specific cases of tuning 1 single normal
2.) There is a button in one of the menus calls Recalculate Normals that will regenerate the normals for everything (or maybe everything selected) based on an algorithm i wrote. Between version 0.02 and 0.04 I changed how my code works to do the recalculation so if you dont like it you could try to find a copy of the earlier version.

But some advanced programs might generate this information in ways that have more options. So if you need more, you might want to compile your own RMS from source and add features, or export to some other program like blender.

@Retera okay, I misread you then. The "inside joke about something my Warcraft III has" is just you saying it can be done?

That video is clipped together from years of other Warcraft III videos that I made.

I like to think that if we cannot tell which videos were fake trolling and which were real, that just shows how good the trolling was.
I do wish that some day I would have a version of World Editor with all the features shown in my video, though, you know?

Edit: The video literally includes a clip of Patch 1.32 with the old menu and an HD 3d background art asset -- instead of the WebUI. Did you think everything in the video was real? :O

Greeting, mighty Retera. I’m exploring your great model studio recently, I wonder if I can add human building\destruction animations to building models with your tool?

Sorry I forgot to reply to this! Sometimes I check Hive then get distracted away and forget to reply.
    Yea you can add those.

Edit: However, the process is different between HD or SD models. Can you elaborate more on what you need?

"It makes sense, seems like a shortest path" is not a particularly technologically useful insight.
Hey man, sorry to distract you from Warsmash.
I wonder if you know a way to scale models (for instance spell FX) depending on a radius/area/region in the editor.
I guess stuff like Death and Decay and Earthquake have FX models specifically scaled for the spell AoE. Could a model editor be helpful with this. Could you calculate scaling in the model editor with how it would scale in the editor/game based on the game engine's grid size or whatever it's called?
    deepstrasz
    deepstrasz
Thank you. Would be cool to scale units and stuff based on the game's radius. Death and Decay has a 300 radius AoE. You could work with distance between points to check for a radius and then scale units based on that, problem is that the game can't scale units based on that but based on percentages.
    Retera
    Retera
Ok, but you could make a model that was 64 radius (128 diameter, the size of a farm), then take the (300 / 64) as the scale ratio to use with the model.
    deepstrasz
    deepstrasz
I just found out that FX models like that of auras (Unholy) are not perfectly circular. That or the spell's AoE isn't.
Hello Retera. I have a question: do you happen to know how to make textures look like this in Classic Warcraft?

I was asking you because there is someone who apparently succeeded, but did not detail the method they used to do it. Note:

Yeah, I think I can imagine how that would be done. You would have to bake the textures into an old style texture.
I do not feel particularly motivated to do so, however. Why would you do this?

    marlonchito2004
I would like to do it as part of a personal experiment, because it seemed like a very good result and I would just like to know how it was done. Only that.
Hey! I have a portrait problem. I changed the sword in Retera Model Studio, after which the portrait broke. Please fix it!
    Map -> Map Thalorien sword.rar
    Retera
    Retera
I wasn't at my Reforged Workstation at the moment, but I was able to look at your map's contents and see that the imported MDX model file did not include a portrait file alongside the import. I assume you are trying to overwrite the ingame model then, but the imported model has the "HD" setting in Asset Manager. Although this is correct for compatibility with SD maps, if your custom unit has "_HD.w3mod/" in the beginning of their MDX model path, this might cause a portrait issue like you are seeing. Did you use that as your unit data model path, or did you set the unit data model to the ingame setting "units/other/ThalorienDawnseeker/neutral_thaloriendawnseeker.mdx" ?
Keep in mind that portrait files are separate files, so it's really important that they line up.

Hello Retera, this may be the first time I ran into this problem with your tool, after optimizing, the model start to stretch and attach to things. Hunter Killer Hydralisk this is the model. This has never happened before after optimizing.
Hi Retera. Sorry to ask again about your tool, but my query is this: how can I make the team color have details like rips and holes (like in the orc hero flag) in Warcraft 3 Classic?

    GrommashC.jpg
    Retera
    Retera
I think that the only way to do this on the classic version would be to have a 3d geometry and then put holes into the 3d shape. This would make the model more complex and might increase lag, so you want to be careful.

Here's an example made from Reign of Chaos menu.

    1621395955171-png.379709

These holes are cut into the mesh itself.
Hello Retera. I have a question: can a Reforged spell work on the W3 Classic using your tool to convert models from Reforged to Classic?
    Retera
    Retera
    No. Absolutely not.
    Retera
    Retera
You can, however, find a classic 3D artist and ask them to completely reinvent a spell that looks thematically similar to something from Reforged, however. @Mythic makes cool classic compatible artwork. Many other artists exist as well.
Ha-ha. You wrote your own wiki page
Hey just want to say I constantly see your posts pop up, showing you tinkering around with everything from reforged SFX editing to an entire custom game engine. I can't really ever comment very much on it because I never really understand the extent of the code that you post or the specifics of the questions you ask but I want you to know that all that coding-mad-science stuff your doing is pretty rad!
Too bad Project Revolution is a mod and not within Warcraft III. I'd have to stick with Strydhaizer's ports for now. And bless him we even have them.

I am just making a game. I use a lot of code from other Hive projects like "View in 3D" model download section preview button. But I guess it is so far just me. I added two guys to the private code repo in case they want to contribute but they did not yet.

It's only War3alike in render style because of the other Hive open source projects that I was able to borrow code from.
    Hey man,

Does your "disarm" tool still work with reforged? I haven't been able to get it to run... thanks!
    Retera
    Retera
    Hey man.
Disarm does not. In theory you could get the code of it and upgrade it to work or be a plugin or something on Retera Model Studio. Originally it was built on top of the same code libraries so it might kind of "Just work" with Reforged if you were to hook up the old disarm code with my new repo. In practice there are a ton of reasons why it is going to take extra time to set up and not going to "just work"

Hey man, please don't give Warsmash up in favor of the model studio, people have been making awesome models with half-finished tools for more than a decade anyway, you might be into something big, i don't see it as an egoistical hobby only for personal gains, i see it as a possibility to keep this community going in the long term, free from shitty aaa company decisions, and i think i kind of share your pain, i'm actually like a primitive version of you, i'm passionate about making a good custom map, but i keep failing at it because i'm no game designer, yet i want it so bad that i keep banging my head against my computer for hours on end, letting this thing play with my sanity, until i am able to make some small progress and the stupid game does what i want, and it feels GREAT, it's called passion, and you my friend are full of it, to give it up is to die a little inside
