The Bubblerino character? I started with the knowledge that he loses and presumably is dead by the end of the battle, so I worked backwards and decided to make him a decent individual to elicit some sadness from the reader as they take in his hopefulness at the end of the story. The only element of silly self insertion is how the guy that is me was a minstrel that put on stupid shows for people.
