Surely you have to start from each homologous series. You have to know well what's an alkane, alkene, alcohol and carboxylic acid. You gotta know the general molecular formula and the common features of each series. Then proceed with isomerism. Afterwards, begin with the various chemical reactions like addition, hydration and cracking (be sure you know the catalysts and the reaction conditions of each). I guess that's enough for now but there's much more of course.

The magnesium carbonate is evidently in excess because you always add the carbonate in excess to the acid (to make sure it reacts completely) to prepare a salt since all carbonates (except group 1 metal carbonates) are insoluble so you can filter the excess carbonate away from the salt solution you produce.
