From what I've heard about AoE and Civilization maps, it's the same general idea. Although you don't "progress throughout the ages" and there aren't any "wonders" or unique technologies, but there are specialties. Strategy is important in regards to building your base and army, as well as tactics of defeating your opponents.

See if the new link works. If it doesn't then try out Erebus instead. It's based off of Castlebuilder, but aimed at being completed in about half the time (it's difficult finding players you can/will stay for 3+ hrs) and contains some elements of RISK. The UI is the only major component not implemented yet.

Builders are a genre of altered melee. Castlebuilder, Village Builder, and Empire Builder.

In the case of Castlebuilder, you can ally/unally/truce at will. Your income comes from a tax based on the number of peasants you control (secondary resource; replaces lumber) which is determined on the number of population buildings you control. There are a number of versions of it, most of which are broken. It's a very slow gameplay (1-3.5 hrs easily) that encourages players to role play to a degree.

Here's an example, sorry about it being offsite (was before I found THW). It's one of the better terrain mods I did. There's no AI, but you can play by yourself to get a general idea of gameplay. If your lucky, against someone else.

If and when you check it out, let me know what you think of the gameplay (in regards to builder maps).

That depends on what your goal is. If you're trying to persuade them to join a particular side, then you're right: it's usually a waste of time.

If you're trying to understand where they're coming from, then ask them questions and see if you can argue their PoVs.
