Well honestly Im not a big fan of WoW, as I believe it completely ruined Warcraft lore and spoiled the image of Warcraft universe in the eyes of the people forever. Still, I know it all.
Though I do like many parts of the WoW lore, such as the Old Gods and draenei. Though sadly WoW lore is mostly just stuff stolen from other sources and authors now.

For modelling you can use Milkshape and others, but Im not the specialist here.

Well you should check the turorial section of Hive for skinning tutorials, it will really help you.

Also dont be afraid to ask experienced skinners for help they can aid you with advice or even help you improve your skin.
