This map is a continuation of the project we began over 10 years ago. If people want more content or bug fixes, I'll be happy to put in the work.



Winterspring Wargames is a map for Warcraft3 The Frozen Throne, inspired by the popular Rabbits vs Sheep by Gate[C]aster. The concept is that each player has a hero with unique advantages and skills he can use in this gruesome killing competition. Every time you kill a creep your enemy must face 2 additional creeps. Once one team has 150, 200, 250 or 300 creeps, depending on the Game Duration, on their side of the map the round stops and team with the fewest number of creeps wins the round.

To help your creeps (kobolds or gnolls) live longer, there are several different possibilities in the big red exclamation mark in the center of each playing field; you can pay to summon a Commander that gives your creeps a number advantages, you can upgrade their hit points and damage or your can summon other special creeps with special abilities like more hp, range and heavy damage to make life harder for your opponents. Additionally you can pay to activate a number of special abilities available to both teams. These range from a global stun to all enemy heroes, silence, damage spells and so forth.

Certain heroes also have access to 'Player vs Player spells', or in short 'PVP' spells. These PVP spells are global in range and allow you to harm enemy heroes and combined with the many unique items purchable for your hero, this makes for a game experience like you have never experienced before.

There are probably a lot of known bugs, but please let me know what you find and I'll note them down here.
Feel free to give suggestions to balance issues and other things as well.

Bugs in 0.84b BETA:
  • Fire Eater ability doesn't seem to trigger properly, further confirmation needed.

===Bug Fixes===
Fixed a critical issue where certain (many) conditions stopped the next round from start.
Fixed a critical issue with AR or a Random Hero in AP would stop the game.
Fixed an issue with Corrosive Hide staying on ground after a Snapdragon Offspring died.
Fixed an issue with the singleplayer bot spawning Mutant creeps too often.


===Balance and Modifications===
The floating text in the middle now updates properly and shows the correct number before ending the round.
Creep count now updates every second instead of every 2 seconds. I reckon the game engine can handle it now.


===New Content===
Map name will henceforth be "Winterspring Wargames" with a reference to Rabbits vs Sheep in the description. Multiple people have suggested this years ago and we did start out with that name too.

Fixed a problem with random hero not working in All Pick mode.
The last hero to die no longer gets control of kobold/gnoll units, as the round restarts anyway.
Fixed a problem with Silent Heartbeat (Necromancer) button location.

--- After Reforged ---
Removed Berserker upgrade requirement from Dwarven Fury, Summon Genie, Soul Drain, Strafe and a few unit abilities.
Removed Necromancer Adept Training requirement from Silent Heartbeat and a few unit abilities.
Went through all heroes and units and rescaled their sizes.
Temporarily disabled Banshee and Blood Shaman due to crashes in Reforged (Thanks to ALCAPOWNED1337)


===Balance and Modifications===
Increased the damage of Ogre Slam from 50/80/120 to 80/110/130.
Increased the damage of War Stomp from 40/80/120 to 80/100/120.
Improved the base attack speed of Ogre Warlord from 2.25 to 2.10.
Slight changes to the message displayed when a player leaves the game (Thanks to MacMartin)
Changed the mana cost of the Barbarian's Combat Master from 100 to 10.
Increased the chance of Pulverize activating from 10/20/30% to 40% on all levels, increased the AoE from 150 to 200 and decreased the damage from 50 to 10/17/25.
Reduced the damage of Thunder Clap from 75/105/135 to 70/95/125.
Increased the damage reduction of Dwarven Fury from 50% to 100%.
Increased the damage of Whirlwind from 75/105/130 to 75/105/135.
Increased the duration of Bloodrage from 7 to 9 seconds.
Increased the duration of Nocturnal Hunger from 6/7/8 to 7/8/9 seconds.
Increased the damage done by Bat Swarm by 20%.
Increased the maximum number of targets for Theft of Vitae from 7/11/13 to 15 on all levels.
Changed the armor bonus given by Frost Armor from 3/5/7 to 5 on all levels, decreased the duration from 45 to 30 seconds, increased the cooldown from 2 to 8/5/2 seconds and the mana cost from 30 to 40/30/20.
Increased the maximum number of targets hit by Damnation from 10 to 15 on all levels. (Suggested by Slake)
Decreased the cooldown of Desecrate from 40 to 30 seconds, removed the duration on the ghouls spawned but gave them a negative life regeneration and increased the ghouls' damage from 5-15 to 15-20.
Increased the regeneration bonus of Unholy Aura from 1/2/3 to 3/4/5 hit points per second.
Increased the number of mirrors summoned by Night Mirror from 1/2/3 to 2/3/4, and increased the mirrors movement speed.
Changed Fire Eater to have a 30% chance to explode creeps attacking the Pyromancer, giving him 10/30/50 mana.
Reduced the Fairplay experience bonus from 25% to 15% per missing player. (Thanks to Nudl9)
Changed Snap Dragon Eggs to create an offspring of Spitfire, that has the same Corrosive Hide and Quills.
Corrected animation Corrosive Hide to be less visually 'overwhelming'.
A 30 second cooldown has been added to Priest of Hasinar's ultimate Wicked Memories/A Will To Live (Thanks to mepeuped)
The amount of upgrades done by the bot (single player) has been reduced by 15 seconds and an additional 5 seconds on later upgrades.
The color of Shadow Warden has been reset (maybe REFORGED related).
Gnolls and Kobolds are now level 2 instead of 3, decreasing the overall exp players gain. Same stats as before.
Flattened the play area to simplify it and increase the visual experience on units and abilities.
Corrected URLs to point to hiveworkshop.com as we took down winterspring-wargames.com.

===New Content===
New HD loading screen (based on the old Photoshop file).
New hero Wildmage is mostly done, but not yet available to choose.



Date: November 10th, 2009.
This Map was change from 0.83 to 0.83b due to a critical bug, which caused a fatal error. This bug has been corrected.

Fixed a critical fatal error bug which occured in games where Frost Mage had used Ice Block. (Thanks to WestBeta)
Fixed a minor typo in Blessing of the Moon and Shadow Serpents.

Replaced Batter with Retaliation for the Veteran Warrior.
Renamed Warden to Shadow Warden, replaced Fan of Knives with Dark Pulse, replaced Blink with Night Mirror and Vengeance with Shadow Dance.
Removed the hotkeys on Genie's abilties.
Decreased the cooldown of Summon Genie from 150 to 120.
Renamed Hemomancer to Blood Shaman.
Changed the way Choking Vines moved.
Hammer of Retribution's cooldown is changed from 25/30/35 to 25 seconds, duration from 8/16/24 to 7 seconds and number of hammmers summoned from 1 to 1/2/4.
Holy Light's cooldown has been changed from 5 to 7 seconds, range from 800 to 500 and healed amount from 300/600/900 to 225/450/675.
Heaven's Army's cooldown has been changed from 180 to 90 seconds and duration from 60 to 30 seconds.
Replaced Devotion Aura with Renewed Faith for the Paladin.
Reduced the duration of Shadow Serpents from 35 to 25 seconds, and removed the Shadow Serpents' collision size completely.
Changed the way Prophet of Hopi gains Focus Power, now it's only every 15 seconds, increased by Shrine of Hopi.
Reduced the amount healed by Touch of Hasinar from 250/500/750 to 250/450/650.
Reduced the amount healed by Divine Intervention from 150/300/450 to 125/250/375, and increased its manacost from 75 to 90.

Added a -clear command, that clears the game messages.
Added a custom loading screen that doesn't require players to "Press any key.." and changed the minimap image (Both images made by our graphic engineer ey-Coco).

Blood Elementals now die when the Hemomancer dies.
Fixed a bug which could make wolves summoned by Ancestral Recall stay after it's duration.
Ancestral Recall now properly display it's 25 second duration in the tooltip.

Made minor cosmetic changes to the multiboard.
Fixed a bug that messed up the multiboard if a player disconnected before game mode was picked.

===Balance and Modifications===
Reduced the regeneration effect of Unholy Aura from 2/4/6 to 1/2/3 hit points per second.
Immortal Soul now leaves a spirit that can walk for 10 seconds. When it fades, The Immortal revives at that point.
When learning Prayer/Dark Seance, the summon now maintain it's position rather than moving to the position of Priest of Hasinar.
The Blademaster has been renamed to the Apostle, and has the abilities Hybris, Aether Strike, Echo, Aether Matrix.
Doubled the cost and item bonuses from The One Ring, Heart of Fire and Buckler.
Doubled the cost of Necronomicon and increased it's summoned skeletons' hit points from 250 to 270, their base damage from 13 to 17 and decreased the mana cost per skeleton from 25 to 15.
Soul Steal, Mana Blade and Harvester only affects the unit wielding it, and no longer benefits from summons.
Blood Ties has been remade, it now boosts maximum life as well as healing on spellcast.
Blood Elementals now deal 75% damage of damage taken, on all levels.
Reduced the AoE of Warstomp from 250/300/350 to 250 on all levels.
Changed the cooldown on Hammer of Retribution from 20/30/40 to 25/30/35 seconds.
Reduced the cooldown on Crown of Undeath from 30 to 25 on all levels.
Reduced the Pitlord's Cleaving Strike from 12/24/36% to 20/25/30%.
Reduced the damage for Rain of Fire from 20/35/45 to 20/28/35 damage per wave, and increased it's manacost from 95 to 110.
Changed Howl of Terror to a PvP ability, that reduces all enemy units and heroes damage by 100% for 2/3/4 seconds.
Changed Undead Bond into a PvE ability that makes 10 enemy units take 200% damage from attacks for 10 seconds.
Increased the chance of Crown of Undeath activating from 3/6/9% to 6/12/18%.
Added a 3 second cooldown on Upgrade and Emergency Upgrade.
Increased the duration of The Old Spirits from 5 to 15 seconds, and the cooldown from 8 to 12 seconds.
Remade Vanhel's Dance Macabre to remove the lag it caused.
Changed the damage of Choking Vines from 15 to 30 per second, reduced it's duration from 8/12/16 to 4/6/8 seconds and reduced it's cooldown from 20 to 16 seconds.
Prophet of Hopi now gains 1 x Focus Power every 15 seconds, in addition to the 5 per kill after learning Shadow Serpents.
Banshee now gains 1 x Focus Power every 15 seconds, in addition to the 1/2/3 everytime she casts Crown of Undeath.
Reduced the duration of Death March from 4 x Focus Power to 3 x Focus Power.
Increased the initial damage from Pain Surge from 50/65/80 to 50/70/90.
Reduced the mana cost of Death Lingers from 25/30/35 to 20 mana per second on all levels.
Decreased the range of Death Lingers from 300 on all levels to 100/200/300, and changed the damage to average on all levels.
Changed the animation of Death Lingers.
Changed the Wight's starting stats from 23 agi, 16 int, 18 str to 19 agi, 16 int, 22 str.
Replace the Wight's Undead Bond with Deadly Bonds, which damages nearby enemy units.
Remade Soul Drain into an active ability that regenerates life and mana for each unit that dies near The Baron while it's active.
Added new icons to Soul Drain, Wraithform and Raise Dead.

===New Content===
Added cooldowns in all hero ability tooltips.
Grouped some Main Menu buttons up in an Options submenu
Added a mode for lower graphic quality, by using rabbits and sheep as creep models. This can be enabled and disabled at the beginning, and during the game using either the -nolag command or the Main Menu on ESC. Only the player chosing modes can do this.


Changelogs before this are also lost to the ages.

We did get permission from GateCaster before making this version - and we coded it from the buttom up ourselves so nothing has been copied.

I like that you guys comment even almost 9 years after I uploaded this. Had the staff fix my account so I could log back in, just to say thanks guys!

With the new 1.29 patch I played this map again and easily spotted a few mistakes here and there, as well as some balance issues. Whether or not I can remember how the Wc3 Editor works and if I still have the old files lying around, is not for certain though.

@Bogdanov: The reason there was no crazy option with like 900 creeps was the WC3 engine and a little due to the computers back then. You'll find elsewhere on this website that we looked for low-poly models of the gnolls and kobolds, because the Wc3 engine only support(ed?) X amount of polygons before it starts lagging, no matter how sweet your computer specs are. I don't know if they've fixed that part, but if they have, a 900 version could be doable although I'm not sure if the map will hold that many creeps :)

easily spotted a few mistakes here and there, as well as some balance issues.

I made a forum account just to ask if there's going to be any fixes for priest of hasinar being able to refresh inventory item and skill cooldowns everytime he swaps between light/dark mode :p . He can perma pvp-ability enemies, spam skeleton summons with necronomicon, perma hex with sheepstick, and easily clear creeps with his nuke.

Game is so nostalgic I had to reinstall wc3 just to play alone in single player against the BOT after 5 yrs

But good news everyone - with Wc3 Reforged coming up, my Wc3 interest has peaked quite a bit. Went through the old archives from 2-3 computers back and I have the 0.84 BETA unlocked, so I can continue this map! Don't expect any deadlines, I haven't touched the Editor in almost 10 years :p

Hey! I've been hosting this on Reforged. The banshee and blood troll are causing fatal errors with their pvp abilities, can you please fix it or maybe even temp remove those heroes? Thanks!

Edit: That whole exp thing is cause the way warcrap works, exp is shared amongst all nearby heroes.
so if you raise it 25% for a leaving hero imbalance..its actually a bigger pot for all heroes on that team +25% of that.

I actually completely missed that you could run Reforged when you preordered, silly me. That means I can test even better :)

I have already fixed the Banshee's Crown of Undeath, it was a bit funky and either crashed or did nothing. I will have a look at the Hemomancer.

The point was them getting more exp per missing hero. They level up faster to make up for not being able to have as many spells and tanking bodies available. It sounds like 25% might have been too high, so I've changed it to 15% for the next version. The Fairplay mode can be disabled, but I just wanted something to at least "try" to help with leavers. It was a plague back in the day when I was playing this a lot, ruined a lot of otherwise good games.


Update for next version:
As mentioned I found the old map and I had been doing some bugfixes and changes for version 0.84 already. Had made notes though, so that was quite handy. I have been testing further (in non-Reforged) and found a lot of bugs as well. The list of corrections and changes is like 60 lines long already :)
And apparently I had made half of a new hero, so I'll finish him up too. Complex hero - The Wildmage, with a chance to screw up spell casts for better or worse :)

Insofar as balance: you could take some cues from old rabbits vs sheep
Like, Auto levelling creeps instead of having either no upgrades or one guy dumping all his cash into upgrades.
If there's a leaver maybe you can set it up for the proceeding game to have an A.I helper of some sort?

Any updates frendo? I love your map but I'm kinda relegated to playing maps that blizz desyncs two people at start and never crash for everyone else. I have noticed your map never desyncs people, but then again, el big crasho.

If you are still needing a ton of time to work on stuff can we maybe just get a version with blood troll/banshee modified to not have the pvp abilities?

Sorry for the lack of reply. I started looking into Reforged so I could test that there were no crashes in the next version, but found out that Beta access is given at random. I am not part of the club unfortunately.
I thought to wait until January 29th when the game is released, then I can fully test.

If you want, I can polish up the current 0.84 and upload it. If it still fails, I will make a 0.84b without the PVP abilities on those two heroes.
It's just another 15 days till release though, so maybe we can give it two weeks and then I can fix it? It does take a bit of time making new loadingscreens in Photoshop and such to update the version number :)

Just made this account to say im happy to see you are working on an update for the map! It is one of my favorites, and is the map i have hosted the most on bnet.
Have often been thinking about many improvements that can be done for the map, pleasant surprise seeing you active!

Very much looking forward to seeing the new version!

Hey dude. I thought you already had reforged, my bad.
Good news if you do wanna get it now, just demand a refund and buy it again. Any new purchasers instantly receive it no matter what, I pre ordered quite a long time ago and never received it and instantly received it upon doing that.
Check first in your install library for "REGION/ACCOUNT". I don't know why they call it region but you might even have it, the drop down menu is beneath "friends currently playing" and above the "Will release at yada yada".
In any case I'm definitely not in a rush Q_Q. Thanks dude.

I've tested Hemomancer and his Cauldron of Blood PVP ability, which didn't bring about any crashes. Is it in specific scenarios it does this perhaps?
The Banshee on the other hand, with Crown of Undeath... that stopped the show abruptly.

Will fix these crucial things first and release, then work on all the polish that's needed. With the new models and scale I would need new icons for pretty much everything.

To answer your question, it will cause crashes consistently -THROUGH- that method but not trigger every time. There are also some cases where "Warcraft 3 is failing to respond"... can be met with patience and the game will actually continue. Most people would just hit exit game of course.
RANTTTT TIMEE:
The game is a complete mess in many regards in the custom game's editor. A lot of stuff is made to "hopefully work".
All custom models are erratic because Blizzard insisted on making Reforged engine work with the old one..and this is responsible for pretty much all of our problems!
I was playing through the beta nonstop and I noticed all crashes and issues in my favorite custom maps : UA2, City of Drugs, LoaP Ascension, ETC,
were from custom textures and models. Lighting from custom doodads like a modern street light results in the ENTIRE FREKKIN MAP being pitch black including your character portrait!

I think the cause of the crashes for hemomancer and banshee have to do with the special effects from the ability. I removed a "revive angel" customized effect from City of Drugs and it fixed a crash while the related trigger still works. Maybe when you have higher focus power as Hemomancer the visual effect is more dramatic? I haven't gotten a chance to play him in over ten years because of the crash lmao, I'm not sure if the effect changes if he had more Focus Power.

I've played the map 4-5 times tonight online and not a single time did we manage to finish without a crash. There is definitely something that needs fixing, although it would be helpful with some crash logs in the editor. Your theory about custom assets whether it be models, doodads or textures is somewhat plausible. Maybe I can draw some conclusions based on your headaches. The amount of models imported are almost none, but custom textures are plenty with all the custom ability icon that require a Disabled/Disabled Passive/Regular/Passive versions, which is a lot of textures.

From what I can tell, both PVP abilities are based on the trigger event "A unit gets attacked", which could cause a lot of triggering with many creeps. Although the old WC3 engine could handle it, so fingers crossed it's something that Blizzard fixes from their side.
There is nothing extra flashy for the Hemomancer based on Focus Power, it's merely used to display the total damage dealt when the spell ends.

Thanks for the quick feedback, as always appreciated. I'll try and see what I can dig up over the next couple of days. I have a feeling the Reforged Editor forums might come alive again, and everyone else will have the same problem :)

EDIT: Oh snap! The game always stopped responding, so I took a screenshot and saved it to view what heroes where in the match. That bloody Hemomancer was in both of the ones I logged. You are spot on it seems!

I spent some time trying to fix Banshee's ability, but no matter my attempts, it keeps crashing. Waiting for Blizzard to patch something stable, I've disabled both heroes.

The new version 0.84 is currently pending mod-approval on this site, so hopefully it'll be accepted and be up soon. I'll let you know as soon as that happens :)

I just had to figure out how to go about it, but the map is updated in this thread now. Had to find credits, changelogs and such from waaay back in the days.

Hay friendo. So new things have been introduced. Ratchet was turned ugly so sad.
Probably more importantly is rounds won’t restart. I.e team wins and the game just hangs and the first team wins saying all heroes died until set rounds is met. In addition : further testing is needed on this but I believe anyone using refunded(classic warcraft without reforged upgrade joke) is unable to join the actual lobby! I saw countless players try to join and get kicked. My friend is on refunded and that’s where I’m basing my guess.

Hey Al,

Well, it sounds like I broke more than I fixed. I'll get working on that later tonight (UTC).

Regarding Ratchet I was a bit spontaneous and just changed the model without testing anything. Is the old model preferred despite the oldschool graphics? In that case, I'll change it back.

Concerning the rounds just stopping, I haven't intentionally changed anything. There are around 700 triggers interlinked for everything to work, so I'll have to investigate.

I messed around with a "SD or HD" setting which was added in Reforged. Didn't think anything of it, but maybe HD only allows Reforged clients to join. I'll get this fixed as well.

Hey again,

I've changed Ratchet back and changed the SD/HD thing to support both versions. So far so good.
When testing the rounds, I get round after round without a problem in singleplayer AP at least. Did you go AR by chance? Or maybe I just need someone to test with "for realz" :p
I’ll play a solid number of games when I get home tonight. There were some less pressing bugs like snapdragon being able to jump out of bounds and his acid doing no damage but I’ll make a comprehensive list later. Schoolie time.

I have done a bit of testing as well, and am able to reproduce the bug. I don't know for sure whether it happens when creep limit is reached, when all heroes on a side dies or both.
I can see it spawns items for the hero that doesn't show up, so I think it's something with the randomization. I have seen it AP as well though *sigh*

There are 700 triggers which adds up to thousands of lines of code, so it might take some time to figure out where it goes wrong. I'm on the case though!

Also, I gave you some reputation for the great feedback :)

EDIT: Couldn't let it go so I stayed up a bit late to crack the case. Found the issue, which was of course due to me having left out some reference to the hero randomization. So unless Gnolls won by creep limit, the game would stop.
I'll just check about the Snapdragon jump and if there are anything else critical, and I'll upload version 0.84b tonight (in 5-8 hours from now).

The new version is up! Should fix all the critical errors there were.

I tested Snapdragon and the Leap ability. I can't find anywhere to jump over an edge that doesn't place me back where I started. Made a "oh no you don't!" trigger from the start because people should stay in the playing area. If you spot anything else, please let me know.

Well...desyncs are occuring regularly now. I was in a lobby where everyone had picked their heroes already so I know for a fact there was no overlap: game crashed as soon as I picked trader.
Mucho issues compared to the old version. If we do AP and someone clicks random the next game seems to randomly crash or desync in some haphazard way.
I was able to play many games without issue as long as we all went on the honor system and didn't play blood shaman or banshee, maybe it's time to go back to that old version and work from there.

2 (maybe more) different desyncs trigger
The "Reforged/Classic" tick hasn't fixed the lobby issue I mentioned previously, I still see players try to join and then get instantly kicked.
Maybe ar/ap + click random is trying to access heroes in a broken fashion, cause certain ones seem to cause crashes/desyncs randomly.
I haven't been able to make it through a full 5 round game.

The desync I think was Battle.net instability - I've played 3 games Friday where 1 desync'ed and 4 games today where none of them did.
I rarely keep an eye on the lobby, but it seems like people join without problems. I've seen 2-3 other people hosting the current version of the map and none of them mentioned anything about this either. Are you still having the problem?
I don't know anyone without Reforged as such, so I don't know how to test if people only with Classic are able to join.

This has always been one of my favourite maps on Warcraft 3. Really enjoy the hero designs. It's nice to see it's got an update.

For future versions (if you're doing that) I'd recommend looking at balancing the heroes with summons, especially Far Seer, Scarab and Keeper. They're by far the 3 best heroes in the map and most of the time it's a guaranteed loss if you have to go vs one of them.

I think the Vampire could also do with a buff, while it does ramp up quite nicely once you manage to spend 30k on items, the ulti feels useless as soon as the enemy upgrades their critters past level ~6-8.

There's a bug with the Footman hero where its ulti can't be learned because you need to have the Troll Berserk upgrade.

I've also come across two other bugs a few times: one where it won't random heroes for the players in ar (never had this happen in the first round only rounds after that) and instead it spawns a bunch of items on the ground, basically meaning the game is stuck because nobody has a hero. I don't have a replay of it yet, but I'll upload one when I come across it again.

And another where the game just crashes to desktop a few rounds in, I'm not sure what exactly causes it but some people think it has to do with the sheep/rabbit limit chosen at the start of the game.

Hey, not sure if you guys still here, but I love the map! Any chance you could make version with ticket limit at 500?

If not too much autobalance etc would be solid, but ticket amount alone would be awesome!

Hey everyone, after installing reforged after what felt like an eternity I searched for my favourite custom map WSW and I was surprised to see it patched and even to find a (somewhat) active community here. I used to be registered on the website dedicated to this map and suggested heroes, one of my suggestion was picked (abomination) but sadly the admins got too busy with life and the map wasn't worked on anymore :( After playing it these days I want to mention that there are still bugs and 3 heroes are sadly unavailable since they would crash reforged. I would love to see development on this map again since this is one of the best (actually the best) custom map for me and some other people. If you are able to do so, please consider working on this map : ) Thank you!
