WarCraft Legends: Part One

Another older project. This was created while I was in grad school in 2009-2010.

This is Part One of what was to be a two-part campaign retelling the events of WarCraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal. These five missions - three orc, two human - tell the first half of that story. The campaign is a hero-based RTS campaign in the style of the actual WarCraft III campaigns.

Screenshots are here. The (older) trailer is here.

Credits - All resources used in the campaign come from Blizzard. All maps were made by Jake Kessler and there are no custom models or sounds.

----------------------------------

The Second War has drawn to a close. The Orcish Hordes that laid waste to Stormwind and Lordaeron have at long last been defeated. With the majority of the surviving orcs now languishing in guarded prison camps, the humans and their allies have begun rebuilding their broken cities and nations.

Meanwhile, on the desolate orcish homeworld of Draenor, the few surviving orc clans squabble amongst themselves. Sensing opportunity, the mad shaman Ner'zhul seizes his chance to assume control of the orcs and forge them into a new Horde. His grand vision: to succeed where his pupil Gul'dan once failed, and lead the Horde to conquer new worlds beyond the Dark Portal...

In WarCraft Legends: Part One, you assume the role of legendary heroes of the Alliance and Horde over land, sea and air. Danath, Turalyon, Alleria and Khadgar clash with Grom Hellscream, Kilrogg Deadeye and Teron Gorefiend in a final contest for control over the Dark Portal's secrets.

Fair enough. I've updated with a lengthier description of the story:

Awesome...I like you,my friend. I like you a lot. :ogre_haosis:

Thanks. =)

could you show more descriptive notes about the game such as screen shots, features used in the map, and a full credit list so it will suffice the regards of description :)

Sure.

There's already a link to an album of screenshots in the description.

Features - It's a hero-based RTS campaign in the style of the actual WarCraft III campaigns.

Credits - There are no third-party resources used in the campaign. I made all the maps and there are no custom models or sounds.

... Is there a quick way to edit the description without re-uploading the campaign file again?

Well what about to create AIs instead of trigger spawns?
And terrain somewhere looks cool, somewhere empty/plain.

Add skip ability to cinematics can improve more the campaign.
I like that campaign, otherwise in Nethergarde Keep defend mission the last 3 minutes was hell hard.

Simply put - I'm not good at AI.

The ability to skip cutscenes/cinematics should already be in place - I just tested it on my end to make sure you can skip cutscenes. Just press ESCAPE during any cutscene and it should skip it.

Overview:

Gameplay

"WarCraft Legends: Part One" is a Campaign that consists of 5 maps that is based on the Second War of Warcraft History.

"The game is very pleasing and brilliant if I say, the game sets on the story of warcraft's second war which is a cool concept, although I'm expecting to only play 1 race, you end up making 2 of them for both humans and orcs which is a unique idea and I like that, each race's techs and unit stats are so different than the standard ones, but I'm not quite sure for the AI, I mean how come in some maps they don't have any worker units to either repair or gather resources and some time the AI that attacks your base takes a few minutes before they attack you? but if you insisted in making them like that, then I have to agree. All in all the gameplay is great."

Terrain

"Terrain is a marvel, but some part of the map they is some wide areas, but each map you take you make up a very good detail on the surroundings and the environment is eye-candy, I like that and good job with the work on the landscapes."

Management

"Overall, great map again and on those trigger outputs, last time I check you can skip cinematic scenes which is good, the quests are decent and nothing to worry about, but I didn't get much on a map where you have to meet up with Deathwing in a located area, somehow I waited there for some minutes and to realize that you have to destroy the dragon roost to end the map, I'm not sure if this is only my mistake but you should add a tip note or add in information on the quest tab to know if your already in place destroy the roost and so, anyways I like the game and hope others will enjoy it too."

Its too many chapter
and add gameplay screen shot

Why No body answer me

Not sure what you mean about "too many chapter". You've never played a campaign with five missions before? The campaigns in the actual game have at least 6-7 missions each, and a couple of them have 10.

I've added a link in the description to an (older) trailer for the campaign which includes gameplay footage.

... on a map where you have to meet up with Deathwing in a located area, somehow I waited there for some minutes and to realize that you have to destroy the dragon roost to end the map...

Good catch. The intended functionality is to re-hide the roost after the Deathwing cutscene, so that you can step into the Circle of Power effectively to end the level.

I'll fix this bug and re-update soon. Thanks Orcnet.

Excellent campaign! I'm currently on chapter 5. NOTE: (Will update review as I play through the campaign)

My Review:

Minor Bugs:

After the cinematic in chapter 4 all of Grom Hellscreams forces that are already placed movement speed is decreased to slow, and when Grom dies his movement speed is still slow when revived :ogre_rage:. Needless to say I didn't use him to beat that chapter. But new units trained are what they should be. (average)
In the first chapter a placed orc burrow decided to not obey gravity.
WC3ScrnShot_112412_215323_01.png

Major Bugs: None found so far.

Suggestions:

Love the camp fire idea, but maybe you can increase the range it heals? Maybe to 300. And instead of using the restore life ability possibly use an aura that regenerates health/mana by a % (example: 200%) using a passive icon.

The diffculity is really easy, maybe make it harder. On the first chapter The Bonechewer clan never sent force's to my base or produced units and same with the Shattered Hand Clan.

Make the Death Knights a bit tougher, one a level 1 another a 3 and the last one a 5. And some stronger skeletons with them. But thats just my suggestions to improve gameplay/difficulty through my eyes.

When I recieve a quest you don't have any color! For example: "Main Quest: Kill Forest trolls." you should have "Main Quest" colored make it more pretty and add those colors in there!

I wouldn't mind adding the color codes myself, it would give me something to do in the meantime. :gg: [But don't forget to give credit!] :xxd:

On Chapter 2 you should progressively add more units to each wave instead of sending the same amount units for 25 min. not making it harder throughout the time given.

On chapter 3 you need to extend the time lenght of the 3-4 sentences lines in the cinematics! I didn't get to read everything... :goblin_cry:

Kilrogg's spell Bladestorm needs some serious nerfing. The tooltip in abilites says:

Deals 70 damage over 1 sec.
Deals 220 damage over 2.5 sec.
Deals 600 damage over 4 sec.

Here is my suggestion of what it should be:

Deals 70 damage over 2 sec.
Deals 140 damage over 3.5 sec.
Deals 210 damage over 5 sec.

Toren's spell Raise Dead Only allows you to control one skeleton. :vw_unimpressed: (to me thats just a waste of an ability)
Instead of only being able to control one, how about 3 permanent skeletons, or maybe even 5. That way you wouldn't be wasting an ability point on that spell.

Ok on chapter 5 20 minutes in-game, you have to 8 to 10 dragons attack your base from the laughing skull clan :goblin_wtf:. Well I got raped even with 8 archers and 4 guard towers + both my heros had an orb. So if you wouldn't mind nerfing that down to say 4 or 5 dragons the first wave. Then maybe increase it to 6 or 8 the next wave.

I rate this map 5/5 and +rep

+Yay a Warcraft2-kinda based campaign. That nostalgia, its like was playing Warcraft 2 Beyond the Dark Portal :D
+Preaty nice terain and cinematics
+Simple missions with building a base, attacking an enemy with it or defence. Searously Its kinda lack of this in all those overcomplicated RPG/Adventure campaigns.

-LACK OF AI.... I mean first mission ENEMY DONT ATTACK ME, damn... THEY DONT EVEN TRAIN ANY UNITS. Thats kinda boring if couple of units just wait for me to kill them all :X

I mean its too many maps i have to download it?
Why just dont make it one maps?

What do you mean by too many maps you have to download it? And it is a campaign, a campaign wouldn't be very fun if it only had one map...:xxd:

I'm still trying to understand what you're saying, but let me try to be as helpful as possible.

1. You can download the campaign as a single file. It's a Campaign File (*.w3n), not a map (*.w3m/*.w3x), so it contains multiple maps inside the one file.

2. When downloading a *.w3n file, make sure you save it in your WarCraft III\Campaigns directory (not Maps).

3. To play the campaign, launch WarCraft III and go into single player. Then you have to click Custom Campaign (instead of Custom Game). It will open to the Campaigns directory by default.

4. If the file size is daunting (there's no custom media, so it shouldn't be), I advise starting the download when you go to bed. As long as you connection isn't disrupted, you should have it finished by the time you get up.

Hope some of this helps.

Nice! I like it! :)
I have never known the full story of warcraft 2, and you could do it at the warcraft 3 style.

My friend, you are missing out. The WarCraft 2 story is great. One day I'm going to do Tides of Darkness (the main WarCraft 2 game, Beyond the Dark Portal is the expansion) because it's awesome.

The novels do an okay job retelling the events, but they had to change a lot to fox plotholes caused by WarCraft 3 and WoW.

Real talk: Playing WarCraft 2 when I was in middle school is directly responsible for me falling back in love with fantasy stories, falling in love with Blizzard games, and falling in love with level design.

hey

i liked your campaign pretty much, although there are some things which you can still improve. many things have been mentioned yet, such as the ai matter, or the difficulty thing, but here are some suggestions (don't know if i repeat some advises that were yet pointed out):

1. the bladestorm is too strong
2. the camp fires are also op. i would increase their cooldown and consider if the mana regeneration is really a good idea
3. some of the texts in the scenes are just too fast, that's pretty annoying because the dialouges are well done.
4. the terrain looks already nice but there are some details missing which give you the feeling to be really into this world (one thing is the lack of ai, which makes your campaign a little bit plastic)
5. an ugly bug: in level 5 the turtles are able to walk on the land; they remain invisible unless they attack. i would either remove the invisibility on land or do it like wc2 and keep them in the sea.
6. i find it kind of funny that whirlwinds are attackable. :goblin_wtf: maybe it's a bug.
7. a very minor thing but for me it was striking: in level 5 danath mentions that they are heroes but they cannot be everywhere. well, although they are in-game heroes, i don't think that danath ect. would consider themselves to be heroes. after all, we are not talking about the fantstic 4 or the avengers :goblin_yeah:

what i really like about your campaign is the whole wc2 thing. i remember when is was going to the kindergarten that i already loved this game and the story behind it (btw i'm working on a wc2-campaign too  ) i think you did a fine job, playing the campaign is fun, and there is still much potential and space for improvement. i hope you keep working on it, and i'm looking forward to part 2 of your campaign!

Don't blame yourself -- WCL was one of my earliest campaign projects and the balance is really off. Chapter II is probably the hardest level in the campaign.

With that said, it *IS* beatable. A strategy I find effective is to make a wall of farms in front of my towers, so that melee enemies have to travel further to be able to attack. Having ballistae and knights/heroes at each entrance to take out ranged attackers (particularly catapults) is also helpful. In general, towers are usually enough to take out the trolls/raiders that attack the top entrance to your base -- it's the two southern entrances that need the most defending.

If resources are tight, train more Peasants. You can never have too many Peasants, towers or Farms.

If you still can't win, feel free to use cheats. The level is way harder than it was supposed to be.

Good luck!

Warcraft Legends - Chapter 5

Hi, I have tried to play this level at lest 10 times, when you die on this chapter i notice that it doesnt say exit/quit or restart, maybe a bug?
Gold is so min and also you get attacked too much , but what is more frustrating is that I have really tried to spare all my men in the beginning and take over the first base at the bottom and build a camp there and even at the top and even at the right side where the 1 gold mine is, either way i lasted longer at the bottom . I dont see how you are supposed to finish this level there are way too many dragons and when you build a boat yard you get murdered so easily you dont seem to have enough money to build and defend your base WHILe you make boats to transport men, i dont think there is a way to complete this level.
Little disappointing for me

Anybody have any ideas or that has played this level ?
