WarCraft II Mage (Hero)

Few months ago...I guess a year ago I wanted to have a cloaked Mage from WCII and then this idea came to my mind. I also wanted this model to be a Khadgar from WCII but a fella had made one, then this arcane guy will be just a commom mage from the game.

FEATURES:
  1. Wrapped skin
  2. Spell Animations
  3. Particle Emitters
  4. Hero Glow
Even it doesn't seem to, the glow and the crystal sphere in the staff have Billboarded bones.

As always...testing wrapping skills.

This model can be used as Hero or as Special Unit such as Kel'Thuzad (Necromancer) but If you're going to use as unit I suggest to change the Combat - Death Type to Can't Raise and Does Not Decay since the model does not have a Dissipate nor Decay Flesh animations properly good.

UPDATE:
  • Dissipate Animation and Decay Bone Fixed
  • Better Wrapping of Cloak
NEW UPDATE:
  • The mage will now fade away in Death Animation
  • Lightning Bolt Missile improved
  • Alpha numbers of Particle Emmiters were improved

Wow, I'm kinda torn.

On one hand, AWEXOME. I was totally in the market for a "Hero/veteran-version of the Wc2 Mage" for a project I've been cooking up... In the mean-time I was working on my own, but it was a simple model edit, nothing fancy. This strikes me as pretty close to perfect.

On the other hand (and I can't believe I'm saying this): I think you actually have too much Team Color. The cloak is huge and covered in it, which takes care of the in-game back/side view... But then the chest-plate thing is also TC? And the pauldrons? Just a lot, man. I don't know whether to suggest the cape be made 'normal' (with cool magicky runes on it or something), or re-texture the pauldrons/chest plate, but something should fold, IMO.

Also, while I congratulate you on making it useful for Hero /or/ Unit, I believe the submission rules state that it has to have at least one of the two (Decay or Dissipate). Having both but both being un-working might not cut it, methinks. (Can you just copy/paste from the Medivh model or something?)

Cool of you to provide an icon and a Missile SFX, dude. I like the staff, and some good animations (though "Talk"? When does that come up?). Hoping to see just a few improvements!

Thanks for your great review! I just wanna to explain some points:

  1. The lot of TC and a huge cloak is necessary because the original WarCraft 2 Mage have a full robe that cover all his body and have TC.
  2. I dont like runes because although its a mage It would escape from the original concept: a full robe mage.
  3. I'm working in the Decay and Dissipate. It'll have both perfectly functional (I tried with the AnimTransfer but some bug happened)
  4. Sorry to disapoint you but the Talk animations are from the original model (Medivh) and for me they're useless, I'm only maintaining it because some folks like to have new animations.
  5. There won't have a 6-th point.

Hm...

Well it sounds like you are deciding between "fidelity to the original" and "fitting to the new medium", and erring on the side of the former. Fair enough, it's your prerogative... But it'd be really cool to have a model (maybe just another version) that fit more to Warcraft 3. (With the new "bundles", it's actually really easy to upload one);

Runes, same deal.

Ah, good to hear!

I wasn't disappointed; Mo' Animations is Mo' Bettah. I was just confused (I thought "why have a separate Portrait model if you have Portrait-like animations in the main model?).

Maybe I'll add some runes to make more beautiful, but since Magik is not my speciality I'm like Riven, how should I proceed? I'm in theater, as soon as I can I will work more.

A fairly simple edit, but it looks al right in game. Liked the shortened beard and the amount of teamcolor. The wand is neat.

We have discussed his death sequence, your intend is clear but it still doesn't look like his body fades away while his clothes drop to the ground. In order to get that wc2 idea right it would require a custom or semi-custom animation and z-scaling of his mesh. The Dissipate animation sound is not here. And decay flesh animation is.. Just there, nothing good to say about it. His hand crosses his cape from time to time, but it's more of a minor issue.

Keep in mind that the the alpha of the third segment of particle emmiters should nearly always be set to zero so that particles disappear smoothly.

The projectile is definitely there but after testing it ingame i god the feeling that it looks very clumsy. Like a lightning spear or something. But it's still pretty useful to mapmakers.

Everything else works well, nothing is broken. Approved. I know that you update your models frequently, so fix the more crucial issues so that I bump up the rating.

edit: ok, kinda better

I'm a sucker for Warcraft 2 models in Warcraft 3 and this one is quite brilliant.

Is it my imagination, or is that staff using the "model" from a Dalaran tower? If so... well played.

Either way, easy 4/5 from me. I particularly love the death animation.
