Warcraft 2 Inspired Knight

Warcraft 2 Inspired Knight

So... I started making this model since 2009-2010 when we started getting tools and other goodies from the website. I always HATED the knight from WC3 mainly because I learned from earlier screenshots we had originally had a Knight model that was a merge of WC1 Knight and the WC2 Knight (Flail, Helmet, Right Handed, Shield, and other things), and the Current Knight was actually the "Crusader" which I assume was some sort of melee hero.

Making this model was frustrating at first, nobody knew how to really edit models through MDL or Oinkerwinkle Tools and the people who knew how to utilize the tools at their maximum potential refused to make indepth tutorials because they wanted their project to be the cool campaign or map with the exclusive models. I mean I don't really blame them, my co-modder and I were one of the firsts to learn how to delete entire geosets without bugging the model without using oinker tools and we never told anyone about it. In Hindsight, i really wished we shared it earlier and we pushed the modding community to do the same.

Anyways, as time went by and more and more people were willing to share how model editing (and uv remapping without pulling your brains out) worked, I started improving more and more on the model. So without Magos, that russian guy who made that buggy mdl editing program, oinkertools, MatrixEater and so on this model wouldve never been completed.

It's not really the best, but so far I don't think there is a model similar to this to this day (unless we count knights using Death Knight animation or a heavily modified Garithos). It only has one attack animation but it uses a Hammer Mace to pound the enemies. I also deleted the AWFUL model system blizzard hard for knights (where you had a separate model for attack/walk/stand and death/decay/bones) which bloated polycounts for no reason (but lets be real here, modern rigs probably dont even care).

Hilarious thing is that I was sure I uploaded this model 4 years ago, but I found my old dropbox and found a bunch of models I created. I have so many models I used to edit but I never released or shown them to people.

Anyways here is my Right Handed Black Knight with Mace and Shield. Walk animation is a bit wonky but I'm sure you guys can look over that.

Credits
  • paladinjst's Mounted Villager model to make me understand how rigging two separate models work
  • infernaltater who I shamelessly 'borrowed' parts of the helmet model
  • oinkerwinkle's tools (all of em), the one who probably brought the mdl editing renaissance
  • Magos for creating Model Editor, my most used tool
  • The guy who made MDLVIS, I really can't find whoever made this but thanks man
  • Retera for creating possibly the best MDL editor I've ever seen; MatrixEater
I hope you enjoy it guys.

Should I credit you if you use it on my map or edit it for my own use?
You want me to be honest? Unless you edit like 2 vertices and say "btw i made this" you really don't have to. Our community is alot smaller than it used to be and the WC3 modding community is probably just a bunch of older people like us who just want to create things. So no, you don't need to credit me if you don't want to. Just have fun and enjoy the model and do whatever you want with it man.

You should release your other models!
I can't. Alot of the models I made use alot of things that say "do not use any part of this model unless you have my explicit permission". As much as I want to just release it all and despite some models being 4-9 years old I don't know if that is allowed. Then again I see more and more models using remapped WoW models so who knows maybe rules change.

A very nice edit of the Orc Warlord model. Great use of textures. Works in-game and performs well. Great job.

I hope you guys enjoy this. One of my hobbies during the MDL renaissance was trying my best to create WC2 models or WC3 Alpha/Beta models. Not many people did it but I was sure people really wanted to do it. I have a bunch of unfinished models (some finished but most of them unfinished) that I'm willing to re-edit and release in the near future.

Genuinely wish I did this earlier, but hey, hindsight 20/20

Nice model, good to know more people are favoring the WC2 Knight over the WC3 one (who carries a lance all day long without using it?). On a different note, why did you use the Bandit Knight texture instead of the normal Knight one?

I used the Garithos texture to be exact, and I did it to just use one material path for everything except the face and mace (which uses admiral). If I wanted to use the Knight texture, I would've needed to use the garithos texture eitherway for the shield and wings so I just used the garithos texture so it was one less thing I needed to worry about. I just assumed if people wanted a Knight texture, they would use one of the reskins found in the blp section of the website or use one of their own.

And my biggest inspiration was the WC2 Knight, which iirc was alot darker than the WC3 or WC1 knight. I'm sure they did that on purpose so the players can distinguish a knight even easier, but I always liked the darker texture

He's a young, dashing Garithos in his early twenties who's just a generic knight of Lordaeron! Nobody knows he's gonna grow up to be the leader in a disastrous situation and completely screw everything up.

Looks nice. I played WC2 since decades. I have played WC1 since 2006 or 2007 (I was very young).

The problems with WC1&2 on DOSbox (Or DOS or Classic Windows Systems) is it won't let me do skirmish with BtDP Orc Swamp Tilesets. :(
