Historical Setting

With the corruption of the officials governing the Imperial Court and the everlasting invasions from the Northern nomads, the crumble of the Eastern Han Dynasty has finally became the inevitable. Following the outburst of the Yellow Turbans Rebellion in 184 AD, the Eastern Han Dynasty has completely lost its rule over its vast lands. Seeing the weakened state of country, ambitious Warlords scattered across the empire has begun to build up military forces in preparation to succeed the collapsed Dynasty. Players will select from 12 different Warlords and attempt to unite China into a single colour through manpower, tactics, and diplomacy.
Down to its core, this map is really just another risk map. However, unlike most other Warcraft III risk maps out there, the focus of this map is to simulate realistic siege battles. Rather than a city represented by a single building, significant efforts were placed on designing and constructing the layout of Ancient Chinese cities to render them a more realistic feel. For instance, each city may include a training ground, marketplace, housing, temple...etc. In addition to cities, there are also outposts, villages, pitstops, farmlands scattered across the map that serve as important sources of income.

There are two different game modes that can be selected: Hypothetical and Historical

  1. Hypothetical – Players play as a generic warlord and have the options to select which Province they would like to start at.
  2. Historical – Players play as one of the 12 different Warlords.

Generals and Strategists played very influential roles in the Three Kingdoms Era and hence players will rely heavily on their support in game as well. Heroes will periodically spawn in a random city on the map and thus heroes will only be recruitable to the owner of the cities in which the heroes spawned in. By having random spawns, it guarantees slight variations in every game. There are 40+ heroes available for recruitment and each hero is classified into one of the five different classes: Leader, Melee General, Ranged General, Strategist, and Waifu, with each class having an unique spell kit.

Different regions of Ancient China have always had unique characteristics in culture, trade goods, and even military. For instance, the Northerners has always specialized in cavalries, while the South specialized in infantries, archers and navy. And thus, you will find special units that are only recruitable in certain regions on the map. To add a bit more complexity, unit upgrades are also available for purchase at any marketplace found in cities.

Players are awarded with Titles and resource rewards by the Han Emperor based on their achievement in their conquests. Given the numbers of cities they occupy, players will slowly rank up from a lowly peasant and potentially grow into a renown King. There are currently 7 different Warlord ranks to progress through. It is also possible for players to gain a rank of Vassel simply by surrendering to another Warlord. However, vassels will not be able gain new ranks.

Supplies are constantly consumed proportional to the size of the army the player owns. If a player is depleted of supplies, the army will begin to starve and perform very poorly in battles. Gaining stronger supplies income as well as protecting your sources of supplies income will be important in order to sustain greater army sizes.

Although both maps revolves around the same historical setting and share similar unit types, this map is significantly larger in terrain size (480x480 vs 256 x 256) - that's double in map size. If you compare the gameplay screenshots of the two maps, the modeling resources used for the two maps are also starkingly different. Again, heavy emphasis of Total War Three Kingdoms is to better simulate siege battles. In contrast to traditional strategy maps where a city is represented by a single building, this new map provides more detailed layout for each city. New systems such as Hero Recruitment system, Warlord Rank system, Supplies system and additional income sources are all new implementations that are lacking in the previous map. Additionally, I have also introduced new hero and unit abilities that make the gameplay significantly more interesting. And of course, the triggers used are now a lot more clean (eg. no memory leaks) and more efficient.

I would recommend giving the map a try and hopefully it will be quite clear how different the gameplays are. :D

The success key of a Risk game is choosing a popular background,such as Middle Earth,Azeroth and Europe of WW II.As a Chinese player,I'm so glad you've picked a period of our history:Three Kingdoms (184–280 AD),which was known to every household in China.Thank you very much,hi1.

I've tested the map in single player.So far so good,here's my feedback:
- The background music was too loud.
- I've chosen the Historical mode,but there wasn't any history event.I remembered there was a blood-letter quest in your other map.But nothing happened this time.
- Sorry for my bad English,but the position of my fourth hero in UI was not suppossed to be there.Zhao Yun has replaced CaoCao's position.

Thanks! And I assume you are asking about the Hero icons? I took those from Romance of Three Kingdoms 13 developed by Koei Tecmo (2016).

Glad to hear that you enjoy the Three Kingdoms history as much as I do :D Also thanks for pointing out some bugs in the map, I will definitely fix those (eg. lower bgm and misplaced Zhao Yun) in the later versions. And yah for now the only difference in Historical Mode is that you can play as the actual Warlords, but I do plan to include historical events in the future. However, I have yet to figure out how they should be implemented or presented. So stay tuned haha. :D

Zhe Rhong (I think, the one with the bounce attack)'s ultimate has no learning tooltip.

Leaderboard should show the amount of income gained (and maybe an estimate of the supplies gained per second).

Catapults still have upgrades. They appear to be limited to 10, this should be in the tooltip.

Maybe have a separate building for siege engines (why would outposts have them but not cities?).

Maybe remove the night cycle, the UI makes it hard to tell the time.

Have more than one music track.

Militia timer uses Watery Minion.

They are welcomed to get them from outposts and bring them into cities, but that would be difficult to do during a siege.

Capturing the control points only gives you the control over the archers on the walls. In order to capture a city you will need to attack the city halls. :D

After i destroy the hall and control point it do not fall to me and i can not recruit general :(

Here some tips that I think can help you improve this map
1/Add more upgrades to troops, like 2nd/3rd level upgrades, Upgrade for archers on the wall...
2/Some heores, like Zhaoyun, have little to no impact on the battlefield.
3/Add some items to the game, like weapond, armors, mounts, accessories,
4/Add a/some commands lets you know which hereos had been spawned and their locations.

^^^ In that case the outpost barracks should have a different model.

Minimap should better represent the map (white area for impassable terrain, show more rivers, etc.)

Promotion message says lumber, not supplies.

Water is bugged, showing up as a kind of translucent blue snake.

Coporal -> Corporal

Righteous White Horse has hero glow.

Special units (RWH, Fearless Vanguard, etc.) should have a tooltip saying which cities to control to get them.

Units that should be added: A spy and/or scout, a healer with Heal and giving cities a better healing spell (Aura of Blight or Unholy Aura), battering rams, water transports.

The Wall Archer system could be better implemented. For example, making the archers vulnerable but regularly respawning (belonging to the owner of their control point).

More upgrades would be nice, after a while there's more money than you can spend.

Do not type "whosyourdaddy":).Control points should not be destroyed,they will be under your control if their HPs are lower than 50%.

I've found some spelling bugs and geographic mistakes.

-"Xi Ping" is supposed to be "Xiang Ping"(襄平).It's an ancient north-east border city established in 284 B.C. and was renamed as "Liao Yang"(辽阳) in A.D.938.
-"Cheng Liu" is supposed to be "Chen Liu"(陈留).The pronunciation of "eng" in PinYin sounds like "[əŋ]" in English while "en" sounds like "[ən]".
-"Pei Shui Gate" is supposed to be "Fu Shui Gate"(涪水关).The character "涪" is pronunced as "Fu",not "Pei".
-The position of GuangLing is supposed to be located north of the Yangtse River.GuangLing(广陵) was renamed for several times in history,its latest name is "YangZhou"(扬州) .

Anyway,those are low priority bugs which don't affect gameplay.By the way,I like the suggestion from PhucTH and cleavinghammer.

  2. Also, you should create fitting icons for units. I mean, Dark Ranger for Chinese units?
  3. Since you can use Mass commands with the hero and captains one after the others why not just give 0 cooldown to the Mass ability anyway?
  4. Abilities are regular Warcraft III ones. I understand it's not supposed to be anything fantastical but some creativity won't hurt at all.
  5. The Marketplace has many icons without DISBTNs. Same with the Bandit.
Not as complex as Total War games (feels like this one is missing things to do) but I guess it's OK.

Approved although I really feel like it could use more stuff.
