I was just about to go to sleep, but when I saw the map section had your campaign posted, I knew I needed to comment! This is probably going to be one of the biggest stars of the campaign section, and I am sure many people will be looking forward to playing this!

Just out of curiosity, does this cover the story of both the prologue + chapter 1 (your two original campaigns), as well as the conclusion to the story?

Anyway, thanks so much Jamir for spending so much time to make this masterpiece.

And thank you so much for waiting tulee. Hope you enjoy the campaign. :)

It includes Prologue and Chapter 1 only. It will end at the final mission in chapter 1. Some of the maps are not yet done, the later ones specifically. But I will add those in future updates very soon!

Tactics Unleashed RE review ( Played on both 1.29.2 and 1.30.1 )

- Gameplay:
You place your characters at the beginning of a battle on a circle of your choosing. You take your turns and move, attack, use items, cast spells, etc. The enemy does the same. If you've played a tactical RPG before, none of this will seem strange or unfamiliar. If you've never played a tactical RPG before, imagine you're playing a table role-playing game, since that's the closest comparison I can give. The gameplay may not appeal to everyone, but there is enjoyment to be had.

- Story:
Overall, the story for me was just good. Often times, I couldn't get into it, unfortunately. It definitely began getting better by the end of the prologue. In chapter 1, with the inclusion of a few cutscenes involving the antagonists, I began getting more interested. The high point of the story is definitely the ending of chapter 1. That ending definitely got me excited for the sequel. This version doesn't yet have it, but I doubt it would be very different from the ending of the original chapter 1.

- Difficulty :
The battles in the prologue part of the campaign were relatively easy. Only the semi-final battle gave me some difficulty. The campaign heavily spikes in difficulty throughout the course of chapter 1, due to 5 new heroes joining you. A lot of people playing the campaign for the first time may feel overwhelmed because of this. I certainly was.

- Customisation :
The 9 weapon types and the birthstones offer a lot of different ways to build your characters. Though certain characters are preferable with specific weapons. I personally found Joshua way better as a spellcaster than a swordsman. Lira without a bow is just unthinkable.

- Grinding:
You won't have to do a lot of grinding in the prologue. In chapter 1, when you have 8 heroes in total ( luckily late in chapter 1), 7 of which you must buy new equipment for, you may have to spend some time grinding.

- Side activities :
The card mini-game is fun, although it is hard to get into.
Fishing is a nice grinding method for gald. It's also a nice way to give your characters a small boost before a battle. More fishing rod upgrades can be added, however, since there are not that many.
If you're feeling lucky, definitely try the slot machine mini-game. It's one of the only methods for grinding BP outside of main story battles.
There are not that many optional quests. The ones present, however, give good rewards.

TLDR
Tactics Unleashed Remake is a campaign that tries to create something most people would be surprised to see in WC3; that being a tactical RPG. It accomplishes it really well. The gameplay is fun, although not for everyone. The story has it's highs and lows. The difficulty in the second half of the campaign can be overwhelming for people playing it for the first time. There are a lot of different ways to customise your characters, though some are more preferable than others. Grinding is not mandatory for more than half of the campaign. While still not that many, there are side activities. ( mini-games and optional quests )
A lot of effort has been put into this campaign. For that reason alone, it deserves a 5/5

Presentation
I really like what you did with the terrain. The tile variation and the use of doodads is just lovely to look at. The only terrain I did not like was the terrain of the first battle, mostly just grass without anything else. I mean, it is only the tutorial battle and does not damage the overall feeling of the campaign as the terrain is otherwise very well done. There's also some very minor tile decisions for the first few battles that I did not like too much but nothing that struck me in a way that it made me feel bothered by it.
The cinematics are nicely done and I liked the fact that you could read & skip the dialogues at your own speed.
I especially liked your use of custom models, a great improvement over the original (I still remember Yuri using that Archmage model as a boy).

5/5

Story
As someone who played the origninal, I already knew what was coming my way, of course. At the same time, it has been so long now that I do not remember the details that well anymore. But I still felt like everything was familiar, I am not sure if you changed the story, I did not check the old campaign, but I liked what I saw. It is a nice story with the good old Joshua's path. I felt a lot os nostalgy seeing this in the new version.
I look forward seeing the conclusion of this entire story one day.

5/5

Gameplay
The tactical battles are still as good as I remembered them. The AI isn't stupid, I am not sure if you improved them since the last time I played this or if they already were that good back then.
What else is there besides the turn-based battles? Fishing, card games and gambling (pretty sure some people will not like that last part but I did not see it as an issue).

5/5

Bugs
The only problems I had here was that at fishing apparently my guy threw the rod too far and it landed on top of the mountain in the back (I targeted the water ofc). At least I think it went there because the camera was stuck there. That was easily fixed by pulling the thing back out and did not happen again however.
A problem I ran into here was that the card game did not explain itself to me. I wanted it to tell me how to play, it kept throwing me back to the menu so I couldn't really play cards at all since it obviously isn't just the value of the numbers (unless it should be, if so, then I ran into a different bug).
Another issue I ran into is that if you try to select a unit with dragging, most of the time you select one of the circle of powers instead.

Overall
It is great to see the comeback of this campaign from the past and I think it is approveable.
I would still like you to fix the card game issue since it disables the player from understanding it but since it is not a core mechanic of the campaign that "breaks" it and because I am sure you will fix it, I will approve this campaign in its current state.
Yes, it is "unfinished" but it still is in a playable state that is indeed well done and therefore I have no issues approving it. Nice job!

@Shar Dundred Wow, thank you so much for the approval! This came as a nice surprise for me (was actually waiting for it to be finished). And also for the 5 star review. This just gave me a huge boost of motivation to complete the campaign now.

Anyway, just wanted to put a little comment to your review, Shar. Just to clarify some things, hope you don't mind.

The first battle looks simplistic, yes, and I wanted it to be that way. Since it makes the tutorial much easier to understand with just minimal decorations in place. I promise the terrain gets a lot more complicated in the later battles, when the player already has a good grasp of the game.

The AI is improved, yes. The AI now acts like how the player would and now follows the same ruleset as the player, unlike on the original campaigns where they have their own set of movement and attacking rules, etc.

The card battle, the rules are never there actually. I just placed the dialog box as a placeholder till I can figure out how to put it. The rules are a bit complicated. But I assure you, no bugs in there. :)

The fishing rod, that's a bug and that appears from time to time. But like you said, it can be cancelled. I'm still trying to figure out what causes this.

Once again Shar, thanks for taking your time to write such a glowing review. :)

Is turned based or no?
Yes, it is turn based.

Bundle restored based on author's request.
Thank you! This will be the last time, I promise. I think it's time for me to accept it for what it is. Thanks to everyone's moral support: Shar Dundred, Deepstrasz, Tulee & ChampionFighter25.

Since this is currently unfinished, I plan to continue updating this in the future so that it can finally be in a finished state. :)

Edit: Soon!

This was already approved before, I think Ralle set it back to pending when you asked ? I see no reason in approving it back. @Jamir do you have any objections ?

Yup, I have requested it to be set to pending a while back.

I have no objections for now. Though, can I request it to be approved back when I finish it? No need to review it again, if possible, since Shar has already reviewed it.

Due to lack of proper time to review this and because it was already approved and I've played the previous version, this should be Approved.
I will however wait for the final touch if I am to review it sometime.

  • A credits list in the map thread description is required where the names of the resource (models, skins, icons, spells, sound etc.) authors are mentioned along with the specific resource. It would be a luxury to have links leading to the used resources. Credits in the Quest Log would be appreciated too.
  • A detailed changelog in the first post would be helpful to reviewers and notify fans about the newest implementations to your map.
  • Map thread tags are important. Please use those that fit and not more or none.

Oh hey thanks deep! Sorry for the delay, but yes I am currently working on the next version right now. It's still not the complete one, but after that, only two more maps to go and it's done. :)

So just to confirm, this will end on the last mission of the original (the battle in the mines)?
If you do not choose to not do a part 2, would you mind sharing how the story/plot would have continued?

Hi tulee, thanks for checking how the project is going. Yes, this is planned to end where the old one has ended, which is the end of Chapter 1. It's just that it's a bit of a challenge for me to make a return to coding this campaign as I was in a long hiatus, so it's hard for me to continue where I left off.

I'm still interested in continuing to the next chapters of the game, but it's your desire to know how the story continues, I can message it to you in private. :)

As long as there is a chance you will make part 2, I would rather not hear about how the story continues :p

Good to see you are still around.

Here's my Tactics Unleashed Remake playlist in Youtube, covering all main story maps and two bonus ones (the latter half of this playthrough is quite hard so cheats are inevitable for the sake of recording). It'll be updated as this campaign continues to develop.
Keep in mind that I will also add the old version (time-consuming one) for one's request in the future.

Hey Cassandra, thanks for uploading your playthrough! It's always nice to see someone else's perspective on how they are tackling the campaign. As for the difficulty on the later half of the campaign, it is intentional, but I assure you that it was playtested a lot of times by different people. Although yeah, all of them found some of the battles pretty hard ahem the boss battle at the canyon ahem. Btw, saving in the middle of the fight is recommended so that you don't have to restart the map again in case you were beaten by the boss.

As for the update, I am currently working on the next update which will add the maps Mine level 5 and Jackblade and quite a bit of changes. Expect an announcement very soon.

Thanks again! :D

Thanks for your response!
By the way, I have some questions/issues regarding Queentia's bonus map:
  • Will this map get accessible in Chapter 1 in the future too? It's a problem that you cannot go back to play that one after finishing the Prologue arc.
  • There is one item (that fire sword Sunsbane) that doesn't work as it should. It doesn't add the Hero's stats into its weapon damage, and I've difficulties trying to issue attack with it as well.

About the first question, the world map will open up a bit more in Chapter 2, so it will be playable again there alongside the others that were locked in Prologue. And yup, I've decided to at least continue the campaign to Chapter 2. :)

As for the second question, I am afraid that this item is currently bugged. This is one of the fixes I've included in my next update.

Also, I've watched your playthrough. Found out that you really had problems with the Canyon boss fight. Hmm.. I admit that this fight was untested in Casual mode, so it might be a little difficult still. I might have to tune this fight a little bit more on Casual. On Normal though, it will be left as it is.
