Settlers of Kalimdor 1.1

Settlers of Kalimdor is a recreation of the well-known board game "Settlers of Catan" in the WC3 engine.

Play with 2-4 players to colonize a lonely but resource rich island off the coast of Kalimdor. Establish villages, cities and expand your settlements to claim more resources to ultimately become the victor. At the same time, try to lure your fellow man into inconspicuous alliances against other players, before backstabbing them with the powers of Onyxia.

The objective of the game is to gather victory points. These are gained primarily by establishing villages and upgrading them into cities. To do this, players will need to gather resources. Resources are given to the players' villages and cities based on what types of land tiles they are established next to, and by which land tiles the luck of the dice decides will be fruitful at the start of each player's turn.

During a player's turn, they may roll for resources, trade resources and construct roads and settlements, before passing the turn over to the next player. Each player starts with 2 villages which they must establish in lucrative positions on the map to achieve victory.

Beyond recreating the rules of the board game, the map features:
- Player-customizable game boards.
- 4 aesthetically different races.
- An infuriating RNG-system designed specifically to not give you (yes you) lumber when you need it the most.
- Optional house rules.

Changes:
- Custom board creation has been updated to make it less confusing and faster to create your custom board.
- New Trading Post land tile has been added to the custom board creation; This land tile will give out random resources to adjacent settlements, and also provide better trading conditions for that resource.
- A wonderful new loading screen image has been added.
- Worked out compatibility with Reforged users (Though the map is still visually made to be played with Classic skin)
- The majority of the map triggers have been reworked to significantly reduce memory leaking.

if this works fully great party game, however need solid group to test, also expansions?

When I started the map I hadn't played or seen the expansions. By the time I learned about them I had unfortunately already painted myself into a corner, mainly due to the map size not allowing to add much more land into the water, so the map is currently just vanilla Catan. I'm playing with a few ideas of things that could be added with the advantage of it being digital though, so we'll see if something could come from that.

Hope you find a good group to play with, let me know if you have any feedback when you do

the 5-6 player expac should be doable i dont think it requires any more land, if you have TTS you can find a very finely scripted version of SaC on there, may help you with some idea

ADDITIONAL NECESSARY INFORMATION
  • A credits list in the map thread description is required where the names of the resource (models, skins, icons, spells, sound etc.) authors are mentioned along with the specific resource. It would be a luxury to have links leading to the used resources. Credits in the Quest Log would be appreciated too.
  • A detailed changelog in the first post would be helpful to reviewers and notify fans about the newest implementations to your map.
  • Map thread tags are important. Please use those that fit and not more or none.

SHORT REVIEW
1. The idea for the map is very good. I like how you use resources in order to grow.
2. Triggers are well organized but I see location leaks and there are so many of them. Please, do something about this.
You can visit our mapping tutorial to deal with leaks.
3. The terrain is just flat, can you add some little height to it?
4. Your map is cool. I would recommend an approval untill you have done just a little improvement with this.
5. You might also wany to state that this can only be played multi-player until an AI is made.

Cheers for the review!

The location leaks is something I'm aware of but never got around to fixing. The woes of constantly learning whilst making the maps I suppose. I'll look over the triggers and plug the leaks I'm comfortable won't start breaking things. Thankfully since the gameplay is pretty slow, many of the leaking triggers rarely trigger more than a couple tens of times over a session, so I've never had any performance issues.

The flatness is something I struggled with. It comes down to me wanting to make the game board customizable to players, where they can add and swap whichever land type they want on any tile they want. Unfortunately this meant that all tiles had to have the same elevation, otherwise certain tile/land type combinations ended up looking really wonky. Keeping everything on a flat plane just made things so much easier. I remember wanting to see if I could add cliffs in the tiles, but as far as I could find when designing the map, you couldn't add cliffs via the basic trigger editor.

I've been putting off updating the map due to tinkering with other maps instead, but I'll see to addressing the location leak issue!

Hey, any updates? It's been over three months and the guide says maps should be marked as Substandard if they are not updated.

Hey, thanks for checking in. The update is basically complete and has been since the end of November. I've been holding off posting it because I've been wanting to make the map compatible with Reforged, and currently when I launch it through the Reforged beta editor it tends to crash when certain triggers fire, and I haven't been able to work out why yet. I decided that I wanted to wait until Reforged was launched to see if the issue was with a beta version bug, but of course, Reforged was delayed until the end of January.

Assuming Reforged comes out on time and I'm able to work out the issues, I'm guessing I'll have everything ready at the start of February.

Short update:
Bit of a delay in the 1.1 release. Combination of the launch of Reforged taking all motivation away from me to want to work on the map, as well as me trying in vein to cobble together something that'd look decent for both Classic skin players and Reforged skin players. In the end I just gave up on that path and decided it'd be for the best to just stick with Classic skin and let the RF players deal with some tiles looking wonky.
I'm still aiming to get it out before the end of February, and if all goes well I'll have a star-spanking new loading screen to go with it too by my friend who also made the loading screen image for my Secret Warchief map.
