Rally of Azeroth 3,4,5

This bundle contains 3 racing maps. I have described the last one in more details below and summarized how other 2 maps differ from it in the "Previous maps" section.

Rally of Azeroth 5

Singleplayer survival rally, with 3D "front bumper" camera and the longest track amongst this kind of maps so far.
Drive fast but careful, evade creeps and try to survive all 3 laps. Survival gets more difficult as you collect more damages.
Try racing against computer-controlled oponent car.

Features:
  • 3D "front bumper" camera; engine sound
  • Drive using arrow keys - smooth acceleration, brakes and turns
  • High speeds - exceeds standard max. unit's speed
  • Car slides - depending on surface and weather
  • About 10 km lap length x 3 laps = about 30 minutes of gameplay; 3 checkpoints on each lap
  • 6 damages - affecting performance in different ways
  • Wear and tear damages + collision damages
  • Limited fuel - refuel at service area near lap start
  • Water temperature - badly damaged cars are easier to overheat
  • Hostile creeps often moving around track or chasing player
  • Variable terrain with a few pitfalls, like uneven road, water, sand or jump
  • Basic weather - none / fog / 2x rain
  • Nitro ability (Q key) - extra power for 2s, can overheat engine
  • Larger dashboard showing: speed, fuel, turbo pressure, temperature, time, milage and all 6 damages
  • Icons on dashboard showing incoming damages (one for each 6 damages)
  • Reverse gear - press or tap down arrow once to activate
  • Back to road button - restores position and direction
  • Wrong way warning - when you get lost for the first time
  • Show the way button - summon spirit that shows you the right way
  • Max speed limiter for beginners - console command to limit max speed
  • Computer-controlled opponent car - simple, without physics, standard max. unit's speed
Shortfalls:
  • singleplayer
  • possible a few camera-related glitches
  • no save-game, no replays
Tips and hints:
  • Move your mouse cursor somewhere it won't disturb you (but not on the border of the screen) at the beginning of the race
  • The main goal of this map is to survive all laps, optional - to be faster than your opponent
  • Remember to refuel at the beginning of each lap, including first; use fountains of health if needed (maps 4 and 5)
  • Use brakes frequently - pushing up arrow constantly and bumping from wall to wall is a bad idea
  • Be careful on elevation height changes, it's easier to lose grip there
  • If you get stuck between trees, walls or other obstacles:
    • tap down arrow once to activate reverse gear (press up arrow to deactivate it), or
    • use back to road button (S key) - it'll restore your previous position and direction
    • do not try to force your way through the obstacles - that's an easy way to get lost or get damaged
    • if you got lost, use "show the way" button (D key)
  • Avoid heavy damages - heavily damaged car may be unable to get to the finish
  • Stay on the road - driving off-road damages suspension (only last map)
  • Creeps may start moving around the map, most of them are light and easy to kill by ramming them at speed
    • Beware turtles - they are heavier and deals lots of damages (HP)
  • Do not try to ram your opponent, it won't work because opponent has infinite weight
Other details:
  • You may drive anywhere but you're required to pass all checkpoints in order before finishing each lap
    • However it's strongly recommended to stay on the track
  • This map features a damage system with 6 damages (last map only): engine, cooling, turbo, body, steering and suspension
    • Crashing reduce HP, speed and increase damages, depending on speed, angle and more
    • Damages are permanent and may affect your performance in several different ways
    • There are minor wear and tear damages + extra damages for driving off-road, driving on water or overheat
    • Creeps may attack you, HP does not affect your performance, but you'll lose the game when killed
  • There's one fountain of health at the beginning of the lap (maps 4 and 5) - use it to restore HP
  • You can also lose by running out of fuel (maps 4 and 5)
  • On a multiboard, mileage is in km, speed in in km/h and temperature (map 5) is in Celsius degree. There's no time limit
  • "Standard max. unit's speed" means max. unit's movement speed in Warcraft (522), that is about 50 km/h
  • Car sliding is possible, depending on surface and weather. Avoid high jumps to stay on the track
  • Wrong way warning appears once when you turn around and start going backward, however it doesn't know the right way
  • Console commands:
    • vmax=N - limit max speed to N km/h, use with N=0 to disable this limit
    • lapc=N - set lap count to 1 <= N <= 9 (default is 3)
    • servo=N - adjust steering speed around center (default is 1)
    • stw or show the way or D key - summons spirit for 20s that shows where your opponent would go if it were on your position
Previous maps:
This bundle also contains 2 previous versions: Rally of Azeroth 3 and 4, with shorter track different terrain and limited features:
Feature \ mapRally of Azeroth 3Rally of Azeroth 4Rally of Azeroth 5
Lap length3 km5 km10 km
Checkpoints-13
Damages126
Other car stateHPHP, fuelHP, fuel, temperature, turbo
Other featureshordebasic weather, nitro ability
Creepsa few; calma few + a lot in the central hill; aggressivesomewhat more, distributed over all map; aggressive
Rally of Azeroth 1 and 2 are much simpler so they are in other, substandard bundle "Rally of Azeroth 2".

Changelog:
  • v 0.99 - old version, without some minor terrain improvements and fixes; old screenshots
  • v 1.0 - initial version
  • maps merge (Rally of Azeroth 3,4,5) and description update (current)

Any feedback is appreciated. I'm particularly interested in:
  • difficulty - have you completed all 3 laps (or more), in what time and how much HP and damages you had at the end?
  • controls - is it difficult to control the car? Is the steering too fast, too slow or hard to handle at speed?
  • confusing places on the track - are there places when you often crashes, gets out of the road or gets lost?
Map is protected
No credits - only Warcraft resources have been used

  1. I guess the vehicle should stop by itself if you release the forward key. To stop it you have to press the down arrow key.
  2. Not sure why there is one computer player that goes through shortcuts(?). You could make it multiplayer instead and add bots if players decide to play alone.
  3. There's a lot of stuttering and shaking. And if you hit the explosive barrel it's horror, which doesn't explode by the way, it just remains there and triggers your spinning off track. You're forced to use back to track even if not off the road. Also, not sure about the range required to trigger the FX but it seemed I was pretty far the second time and still got shaken.
  4. OK back to road didn't work, the camera was still heavily shaking.
  5. Why can't you reverse?
  6. Even hitting a wall might get your camera to shake naughtily. Also going through bushes/plants shortcuts.
  7. Back to track doesn't put your vehicle's facing on the right track if you use it when going the wrong way.
Right now, it's pretty much unplayable.

Awaiting Update.

ADDITIONAL NECESSARY INFORMATION
  • A credits list in the map thread description is required where the names of the resource (models, skins, icons, spells, sound etc.) authors are mentioned along with the specific resource. It would be a luxury to have links leading to the used resources. Credits in the Quest Log would be appreciated too.
  • A detailed changelog in the first post would be helpful to reviewers and notify fans about the newest implementations to your map.
  • Map thread tags are important. Please use those that fit and not more or none.

1. Fixed - vehicle will slow down and stop by itself when forward key is released
2. Racing with bot is now optional (selectable at game start).
The map is for singleplayer only and it won't change - too much effort required
There are a few shortcuts that can be used by bots to make up for their limited speed
3. I've reduced camera shaking and fixed some possible sources of excessive stuttering / shaking, but I don't know if that was your case.
Explosive barrel should explode when hit with high speed, otherwise it'll bounce you like when hitting a tree.
Hitting explosive barred should not trigger any shaking, however driving over grass can cause some minor camera shake
4. If excessive shaking is still present, please let me know if it's vertical or all-direction shaking, what frequency it have and if there are error messages displayed.
If it won't end after few seconds, then please try console command "shake=0" and let me know if it helped
5. To reverse, you need to stop first and then tap down arrow once. Since this update, reverse works also when holding down arrow.
6. Some camera shaking while going off-road is intentional. If it's too high, use "shake=N" command (N=80 is default, N=0 disables shaking) and let me know if it helped.
7. Back to road puts your car back on the road, but not necessarily on the track.
Used just after getting off the track, should put you on the right way and direction.
If you get lost, use "show the way" command (or short form: "stw") and follow summoned spirit.
I've also added some wrong way signs - when you see double archery range facing your direction, it means you go wrong way

I guess you could just copy the triggers for more players and make the cars either not bump into each other or smaller?

I guess you should make some options to choose from before starting the track/race.

Many times, I get lost, have no idea where I'm supposed to go to. Sometimes the camera seems too close to the ground, especially when up on the cliffs.

Thank you deepstrasz for the playthrough, it was very useful. The shaking was intentional on the grass, but shake magnitude was way higher than I had while playing it on my Warcraft 1.30.3, so it may be some compatibility issue. I've replaced "Camera - shake camera" trigger with changing camera's roll and pitch, so it should now work as expected - there should be only minor to moderate shaking, about 10x smaller than what I saw on the movie. Please let me know if it helped.

By the way, I've fixed the barrels so they can be destroyed with lower speed.
It's recommended to disable "always show health bars" in game options as that bars are very disturbing from this perspective. Same for mouse cursor in the middle of the screen. I couldn't find how disable that from triggers. I also couldn't find a global fix for camera getting too close the ground - when I find such places I just fix the terrain there to be more round and lower.

I saw you got lost only in few places - I've fixed terrain there a little. When you get off the track, it's easiest to just stop and use "back to road" button. If you get lost and don't know the right direction, you can use "show the way" command (or simply "stw") and follow summoned spirit.

maybe @Tasyen could help?

Would be best to add some dummy abilities with hotkeys for these commands instead of having to write them in the chat bar.

This actions can be used to alter some of the selection behaviour and shown unit infos.
  • Actions
    • Game - Disable selection and deselection functionality (Disable selection circles)
    • Game - Disable drag-selection functionality (Disable drag-selection box)
    • Game - Disable pre-selection functionality (Disable pre-selection circles, life bars, and object info)

Thanks @Tasyen for the hint - I don't need to disable selection functionality, but the last action helped to disable life bars so the user no longer needs to change it in game options.

Would be best to add some dummy abilities with hotkeys for these commands instead of having to write them in the chat bar.

There was already a dummy ability for "back to road" command (S key while stopped). I've added another for "show the way" command (D key).

  2. Sometimes you can see the void under the terrain on ramps.
  3. The creeps are there kind of for no real reason. Maybe you could make some of them do something to you like temporarily ensnare you or blood lust you in the right moments. Say, if you wake the troll by coming too close, you get ensnared. If you "help" the ogre in some way like killing a sheep (that would become its food), the ogre casts temporary blood lust on you. Just some ideas.

Things to think about for the future:
-swamp and other kind of terrain (ice, lava, wet etc.) that might slow you, hurt you, make you slide etc.

Approved.

Thank you for review and feedback.
There's not much I can help for camera height issue, is it very disturbing or rather a minor issue? Would a small increase of camera height help?

Creeps are there to attack player, when your HP reach 0 it's game over. However, they are not very aggressive, can be evaded or killed when hit.
I don't know how challenging is this map for other players, to survive all 3 laps and win the race. I expect it should be rather easy but not trivial

I'd like to ask people who played this map to the end (if any) how much HP they have left after completing 3 laps (also damages and time).
This could help me to balance this map or future maps of this type.

The issue with this is that it's very similar to the other one and it has its own thread. I could foresee a kazillion of such map threads.

  1. The heroes from the tavern should be removed. You should also make the tavern unselectable if it's not supposed to be used that way.
  2. Some doodads like trees and arches should be placed a bit in the ground as they almost levitate.
  3. Playing this much will make you dizzy because of the camera shaking.
  4. Reached the second lap with about 400HP. Is there a way to repair or something? Seems a bit random to dodge creeps.

Approved.

Thank you for review.
The map is somewhat similar to the other one, important differences are highlighted in description to show how similar or how different it is.
There won't be much more threads like that.

I've updated this map with some minor changes:
removed heroes from Tavern and made it somewhat unselectable, fixed some "almost levitating" trees and moved Fountain of Life to more visible place, just after the Tavern.
You can use Fountain of Life do restore HP, but there's intentionally no way to repair damages.
Dodging creeps is a bit difficult, but if you have enough speed you can also run over them, especially the smaller ones.

The concept is nice, considering that there aren't many racing games in Warcraft 3. I played this using Reforged. The camera feels kinda laggy and it barely rotates at some point. I like that you added a guiding spirit to show you where to go + the reset ability that puts you back on the right road. An AI can also be added at the start of the race. Kinda sad that I cannot see the vehicle I'm racing with, because of the camera angle set.
It is a nice game but at its current state it cannot be approved considering that it lacks a lot of features and the execution is very simple and doesn't provide much replayability.

Set to simple

Thanks both for your comments. Even if I disagree with some of them, it's good to hear how others see my maps.

deepstrasz,

as this map, as well as "Rally of Azeroth 4" are considered too similar to my other maps, I'll soon merge them into single thread (add both maps to Rally of Azeroth 3, which has the most comments and remove other 2 threads).

Alexen,

please back up your comment and put it into the merged thread after I merge all 3 racing maps into single thread. Let's continue the discussion in that thread.

@tomek83 please do not delete any of your map threads and then make new ones with the same map(s). Let @Alexen to merge your threads with all the comments and stuff.
Check your PM and let's not spam the bundle of the map with administrative stuff.
