Mage Siege v1.37
Created by PoZoR

Map Info:

Type: Team Survival
Number of Players: 1-6 (recommended 4+)
Difficulty: Can be set
Playing Time: Increases as you improve

Features:

Unique spell slot system with interchangeable spells.
Over 100 custom spells for a large number of builds.
Mixing system.
Unique bosses and minibosses.
Environmental traps and elevators to utilize.

Objective:

Periodically, large numbers of monsters will spawn around the edges of the map. Your objective is to work with the other players, survive all the waves of monsters and kill all three major bosses. To do so, you must utilize the precious gaps between the waves to learn spells and gather items.

Starting Tips:

You and all the other players in the game spawn together in the middle. You run around the map while the waves aren't coming. You pick up spells, which spawn around the map. There are 6 "colours" of spells which represent the spell slot on your character that it occupies. For example if you pick up a gold spell, it replaces whichever spell is in your gold spell slot. This means at any one time your hero will have up to 6 spells, which can be continuously changed at your choice depending on what you find and what works together. Generally, spells of the same element will work well together and bestow synergizing effects on one another, but there are several hybrid builds that can be achieved, such as those of a tank, dps, summoner, runner, etc.

Gameplay:

You work together with your team, try to make mage builds that complement one another, and beat the shit out of the monsters. killing waves usually involves a lot of kiting, character repositioning, timing, and efficient allocation of the resources the map gives to your team. A single player hogging all the spells regardless of who it benefits the most will surely lead to your team getting owned. Some waves have special abilities, and to defeat them effectively may require usage of traps, elevators, separating the invading force, or using choke points.

Bosses:

There are two types of bosses. The three major bosses which are compulsory to defeat for winning the game, and the five side bosses which are not compulsory but will benefit your team if you slay them. The bosses all have different techniques and require your team to work together in different ways to defeat them. For example, blind coordination is required for the Avatar of Darkness, while separation and kiting is required for the Twin Emperors. Some bosses may require your team to be patient and fight cautiously, and others need you to attack quickly and aggressively.

Things that Help:

Of course, you will have an array of spells, synergized or not, working for you. You will have rejuvenation potions working to keep you alive and your spells fuelled. You will have items that compliment particular spells, or spells that compliment particular items. You will have various terrain advantages, treasure to loot, and traps to use.

As a avid wc3 mini-game/survival gamer, this map definitely gets a 5/5.Why? I will explain below.

First of all, the concept for this map is well planned out and very VERY original. It is about collecting and combining the various spells that you picked up. This makes every game different and fun. It is exactly what the description says, "By properly synergizing all the spells available, ...... provided there is good team work". Don't understand? Play the game and you shall know. IThe description totally explains all about the game play, and those who complain a short description, you didn't play the game obviously =.=

2ndly, its a 100% co-op game that requires a full house. Players are required to stick side by side and help out one another to collect and find the correct spells for a combination. This is what makes the game fun as interaction is required between players. Ever hate those people going out and killing all the creeps and leaving you none? Hate overpowered players going "I'M GOD! HA!"?
In this game, those will never happen. The game is difficult though, but with the right teammates, it may be possible to win.

If your'e lazy to read the text above, this is my summarised REVIEW.

Pros
  • Very original concept. Probably the only one out there.
  • Requires much teamwork which makes the game really fun, and also prevents people from soloing.
  • Gold is not a primary here, so ksing/last hitting won't do much to help you overpower others.
  • Bosses are challenging and fun.
  • Lots of exploring to be done, nothing is given to you, you gotta FIND :D
  • Many spells, custom ones and non-custom, but making them better as you get certain spells, is what gives the game a edge.

Cons
  1. Steep learning curve. Noobs/Beginners can kill the game aka make it short and boring
  2. Bosses are very hard to win.
  3. Lacks a deeper explanation for newbs in the game, some people still act/are noob even after explaination. Eg. The stepping of shiny square buttons.
  4. Unbeatable? Tried with two friends on skype, and two other regular players which played before. LOST.

It is a very interesting game, especially if played with friends. If your'e into fun, challenging, co-op, UNBEATABLE i think so, game, THIS IS A definite "must try or die" game.

remember to get at least 4 players on your team when you are testing =)

Here is a guide to how many players you should get:

Noob Mode: 2 experienced players, 4 players if you are all new
Easy Mode: 4 experienced players, 6 players if you are all new
Normal mode: 6 experienced players, don't attempt this if you are all new

I highly recommend this can play it for hours, hero skill progression feels a lot less linear compared to most other maps

Great game but a couple things you can work on: spell tomes still give attributes, some still have "permanently increases intelligence" instead of their element, immolation potion says "restores hp", and when you craft things it still says you failed but you get the item and no damage is done. Also, camera locks after revive, and not all heroes revive at the end of each round.

Downloaded for testing, entered "iseedeadpeople" and got kicked out of the game.
Signleplayer cheats exist for a reason: map testing and review.
No review from me, I wont bother hosting a bnet game that I can't test fist.
(because they usually suck)

tested the map, worked fine and was fun, didn't need cheats to test it, although the dialogue when i got kicked was a little bit annoying

I left the map for a long while and all this time the version 1.35 had revival glitches in multi-player. I have fixed those glitches along with the problems mentioned in this thread, thanks to everyone who tried the map out. You can now download the new version 1.36 with the glitches fixed and difficulty reduced.

My Review

Mage Siege
Rating:4.5/5
Comment:No imported models(thats cool,hi hate maps with a lot of imported models, except Booody`s Diablo III :)),keeps map size good.Gameplay is also good, because of custom abilityes and waves,bosses,etc...I also like custom UI.Just one thing is missing, but its not important.Empty terrain between regions.Add some "hidden marketplaces" or something like that.

Thank god the revival glitches are fixed. Map is playable for me again! It is a lot of fun when you don't die and respawn to find a camera lock..

@Draaien
Thanks for your feedback. I also felt that the terrain is empty between some regions, but in early drafts of the map filling up the terrain with objects changes the way the combat works. At some places the problem is that dodging boss attacks becomes hard and lone players get surrounded very easily. At others it creates too many easy choke points for large waves.

@Hammerfist
I might consider making single player, but I'd have to revamp the bosses because they can very easily kill lone players.

@Naman
Hahahahaha sorry about that XD let me know if oyu find any glitches :)

Great game in my opinion, well balanced and not very difficult to understand, but could use a bit more upgrades.

-For example, spells could be used to level up when collected again, this would help in later levels or against bosses.

-Making ultimate element spells could be developed, so people could concentrate on making one element stronger, rather than collect whatever would be beneficial against new players.

-Also would be great to see if instead of human mages, warlock or shamans or acolytes. Who could provide a bit of diversity and could also provide bonuses to certain elements.

Ultimate level spells are those cast by spellwords and ultimate items. They all interact with the elemental aspect too. The most powerful spells are the team spellwords which can only be cast once. Most full set elements have its own spellword to cast. Each element also has complimentary items to boost its strength.

Next version will include:
Fix of minor revival glitch which occurs before wave1 starts
Fix Sword of Gabriel tooltip mistake
Tracing effect on the wave 2 boss to make his movements easier to follow
Rebalancing of light spells to make them more viable early game
Sound effect for successful mixing
Cinematic dialogue changes
Changes to tooltips and buttons from noob, easy, normal to easy, normal, expert

Very interesting map with a good twist on survival games.
However as mentioned earlier in this thread the learning curve is very steep.
It is near impossible to figure out all terrain features (levers, traps, rolling doors and more!), craft things with alchemy, and search the map for new spells at the same time with a time limit running.
A simplification of the map would make it a lot easier to get into the game = larger player base.
E.g. only simple recipes +simple mats available on noob mode;
E.g. type of trap available unveiled step by step through the difficulty levels or through the waves - such as: wave 5 complete, whirlpool trap is now active (this is also a handy plot device if you like such things)
Suggestion - allow the team to restart the game upon defeat, that way one need not go through trouble of re-hosting, and makes learning the game way faster.
Another (challenging) suggestion - scale mobs, bosses or player stats etc to number of players (it is harder to have spell-words made with alchemy with a smaller team, etc).
I have only tried this game as a duo with my boyfriend so far and would really like to see more good duo-able wc3 maps. Keep up the good work.

Hi Syphie,
I completely agree with the learning curve issue. I have tried simplifying the recipes by adding them into the recipe items themselves. Recipes have also been simplified from previous versions (originally even reviving required a recipe). I will try and figure out a way to make the game restart-able, and maybe lower the difficulty of the game in general. Note though that noob mode can be done with just one or two players. So far only two teams of players have completed the game on hard and watched the cinematics I have spent so much time on, which is a shame :(

Very cool map! Me, a friend and a few random Garena people conquered the Noob difficulty and were very disappointed once it was over (mainly because we finally had some awesome spell combos and could only try it on the last boss), but we still had a good time and we're eager to try the harder difficulties!

try the harder difficulties, they are definitely possible with good teamwork :) 4 good players will be able to beat hard difficulty with several tries. Also you get to see the more awesome bosses and try out better items :D

This is definitely the best of all recent maps that I've played. Awesome gameplay and flexibility. 6 player limit is great too as it is pretty hard to find players that will even try out the map nowadays >.>

Definitely wish to see this game expand and develop further~

It has been two years since I last updated this map. I noticed the mapmaking community was still active so I decided to kill some time. In this update:

It is now possible to solo this map to some degree (although nearly impossible to complete alone)
Map is much easier for new players and for people who want to try it out solo.
Two new build changing items: Mindblade and Selfish Crown
Increased spawn rate of tomes
Increased passive gold income
Scaled wave size according to number of players
Gold balances for number of players
Hit point balancing for number of players
Erytheian Giant and Dragon King are now more dangerous than before
Rebalanced gold costs for some items
Rebalanced mana costs for some items
Fixed Grim Soul not healing when it should

Excellent map!

Really awesome map! I think it is a very unique map with really cool elements involved. I will be playing this with a friend soon, is it possible to defeat it with two people?

hi arcdaemon1, thanks for playing :) Yes after the new tweaks in this update, it is now possible to beat normal mode with just two players, but it will be quite difficult when you are facing the bosses. After many tries I believe with two players you can take out the first boss and second boss in normal mode. If you like the game please give a vote for the map I would greatly appreciate it ^__^

Hi, I played your map a while ago with some friends, we got pretty far and enjoyed it immensely. But we noticed an imbalance in one of your items—the item that gives you temporary invulnerability when you cast a spell triggers off the immolation spell, giving you pretty much permanent invulnerability if you can upkeep the mana.

Thanks for the report and review Strikest, the Blaze spell no longer triggers Golden Ring. Version 1.39 has been uploaded with this fix, as well as a full spellword combo list in the quests, and tooltip fixes for a large number of spells.
