Leap of the Lotus

Introduction:

This map is my showdown with artistic and innovative gaming. Leap of the Lotus is inspired by the fabulous thatgamecompany's "Journey" and the simplicity of old DOS-games, mixed with personal expression.

The map is an attempt to combine the melancholia and free-roam feeling of Journey with classic arena elements, while still centering the game around a gathering and score system of old DOS-games. All this mixed together gives the pretty surrealistic theme, gameplay and experience that is Leap of the Lotus.

I urge you to try and enjoy the style, atmosphere and primitiveness of the map which I have actually put a lot of thought into. And do so with a friend or two.
Personally I find the map very enjoyable and look very much forward to play against other players. So in case you are up for a game, throw me a PM so we can find a time to do so.

Gameplay:
Breakdown:
In all its simplicity this small map is a race for points. You have 5 minutes to collect as many Black Lotuses as possible. To help you get to the top position there are several other kinds of Lotuses which boost abilities, collection speed and energy generation. On top of that you have 5 unique abilities at your disposal, which are used to navigate and cripple your opponents.
Leap of the Lotus supports up to 12 players competing against each other. Since the map is very big, at least 4 players are suggested but it can still be played with only two, though the player vs. player action might be minimal in such scenario.

Gametime: 5 minutes
Rounds: 1

Lotuses:
Amber Lotus: 6 Amber Lotuses can be combined into 5 Black Lotus.
Azure Lotus: Regenerates 150 energy over 15 seconds.
Emerald Lotus: Doubles the points you get from Black Lotuses for 15 seconds.
Scarlet Lotus: Doubles flight speed for 15 seconds.

Black Lotus: Main source of points. The most valuable of the Lotuses. Grants 1 point.

Abilities:
Flight: Take flight. (20 energy)
Negate Alacrity: Release a burst of energy which slows nearby opponents by 80% for 25 seconds. (40 energy)
Paralyze: Throw a ball of negative energy at an opponent. Paralyzes the target for 15 seconds. (80 energy)
Dark Transit: Engulf all opponents in darkness for 10 seconds. (100 energy)
Phase Shift: Shifts out of existence to avoid being hit. (20 energy)

Features:

Every game is random:
-27 different terrain types, 1 randomly chosen each map.
-Randomized landscape, no map is the same.
-Roam the land in several types of weather.
-Random encounters. Experience ancient creatures, traveling merchants, forgotten ruins and more.
-3 different unit types chosen randomly, all with same abilities. Balance at its best.
-5 powerful abilities. Each with its own unique purpose.
-Opponents are shown on the map at all times.
-Guaranteed short matches (5 min).
-Finger motoric and target training.

Possible Implementations:
-Customizable game time - Gametime: 5, 8, 10, 15 min
-Customizable round amount - Rounds: 1, 3, 5
-Computer AI

Possible Bugs:

Since I have not been able to test every single aspect of the game there might occur some oddities.
Especially the buff timers from the Lotuses. Scarlet Lotus fx; Doubles flight speed but I can’t tell if all players will gain the double speed effect when one player pick up such flower.
And there may of course be other bugs I have not thought of.

Creator's Notes:
Remember this map is foremost a quick and time killing, speed map. So please don’t expect a huge dungeon crawler RPG, because it is nothing like that. Try to accept the premise and focus on the alternate game type this is.
If you don't have anyone to try the map with then let me know. I will be more than happy to take a couple of games.

I am of course open for constructive criticism and suggestions. The core gameplay will stay as it is, but tweaks can always be made.

"Leap of the Lotus" is a Mini-game based on a DOS-game that resembles from picking items and getting a high score.

"Although I don't have much idea of that game right now, the warcraft 3 version that you wait make a excellent different view of it, I enjoyed the game play as well on using cool abilites, plus the different model of the unit every time you restart or start game."

"Terrain is clumpy or I'm not if this is how the DOS game would look like but I can suggest you give some flowers/plants or any other doodads that will blend with hills."

now i get, it this for the farming conttest, im rigth?

Heeeh... no.

If you played it as singleplayer I kinda understand what you mean.

Edit:
Even if it were to compete in that contest it is too late now.
But you have to understand that this map is not at all action upon action, sugar coated with action. There can (and probably will) be confrontations which can win you the match if you plan your attack. But the goal is to get most points. And you will not get points from attacking you opponent, you merely make him get a disadvantage.

you can atack opponets?... i wish to have free camera for that, just an opinion while i was playing.

Yes you can attack your opponents. Not with auto attacks, because there is no such thing. You can use most of your abilities to directly or indirectly hinder other players.

You will, however, not get a fraction of the whole experience if you just run around the map with some computer AI standing still. It is a multiplayer (human) map only.

If you wish, I'll smack you around a couple of times ;)

Haven't played this but when I saw your signature picture I immediately thought of "Journey," and looking at the screenshots it does very much remind me of those sand dunes (nostalgic ;[).

Good luck if you're still continuing this project!

Aye. I kinda tried to capture the melancholic feeling of Journey (fantastic game btw).
So far it is only playable in multiplayer with other human players.
But once I get to it I'll add computer AI. I just have another big project on my hands at the moment :)
