Ice Rock Shield

Sorry that I haven't made a model in a while, folks, been busy with other things in life. Anyway, this morning I decided to make something, and this is what I ended up making. I'm considering adding in a skull beneath the ice, but I guess I've used enough skulls on my other models already.

For people who didn't seem to understand: This shield isn't made purely out of ice. It's a shield made of stone, covered in ice. The ice is translucent, while the stone is opaque.

I know this one has a bit higher file size than what I usually make. My stuff is usually 2-12 kb. But this is still a reasonable size compared to other attachments, and considering the quality. If you are really upset about the file size, you do have my permission, just like all of my models, to open it yourself and delete a few spikes. You could also simplify the spikes by deleting everything except for the last segments, and then moving them back onto the shield. The result would be about 15 kb.

Imported file size, after using mdxsquisher and MPQ: 12.3 kb.

You wasting too much poly on those spike! Seem like you only copy those spike from Doodad model without any poly modify.

Every spike is different, they're not just copies.

Don't complain about poly count in an item that is clearly not meant for being spammed on a thousand footmen. This is obviously an item that only a few units in the game would have, and the poly count would only be an issue if you were making thousands of these.

Copy and textures modify, not make different about poly count! When i first saw the slogan in your signature, i almost love the way you make model and all. But seem like slogan only a slogan! "Not low file sizes" -Check!

The shape and texture of each spike is different. Same amount of polygons, yes, but different configuration.

This is the only high file size model I've ever made. All of my other models are 2-12 kb, with imported sizes of 1-4 kb.

This one is still small, only 12 kb once imported. There are plenty of attachments on hive with much, much higher file sizes, why don't you go complain repeatedly on them instead? I read your first comment, and responded accordingly. Making additional posts and continuing to complain about the same thing won't be any different than your first post.

Those other higher file size stuff you mentioned dont even deserved my complain, my free time is limited, but bad model with huge file size is unlimited, i didn't say your shield is a bad model. I like your slogan so i suggest possible way to make your stuff better! You can add more textures animation to those crystal!

Wait a second... First you ask for lower file size, now you ask for more texture animation? Do you realize how much animating the textures would increase the file size? That's a good idea, and all, but I think players would hardly notice that kind of effect in-game, so it wouldn't be worth the increase in file size, especially since the only realistic animation for ice would be melting water or sparkles, which would be done with particle emitters, rather than texture animation.

Off-topic: I looked at your model thread. A lot of cool stuff in there. Considering your disabled reputation, low post count, and no resources uploaded, when you've got a stash full of really cool models, I'm guessing you probably grew up on a different resource forum, and then moved here a few months ago. You could answer this in a PM if you don't want to post it in the thread, I guess, but -- What brought you to hive?

- Actually, a Global Sequence and an ingame textures animation 'll take from your 3KB for maximum, by decrease the unnecessary poly count, you 'll gain much more than that 3kb.
- Let make an example: 14 spikes , each one get about 6 poly reduced then total 'll be 84 poly. All you need to do is reduced poly in one spike and copy them again, fast and simple, even with more textures animation the file size'll smaller than it is now!
- I'm already here long before. Some guy just jealous every time i post my model here so i keep them in my album to avoid unnecessary conflict for every one.

Texture animation won't make the model look any better, while the mesh does. Texture animation is great for lava and such, but ice and stone having texture animation wouldn't make any sense in the first place. Pick up a rock, or look at an ice cube. What it looks like won't change, except for the ice melting, but having ice melt from the shield wouldn't make sense, because then one would expect all of the ice to eventually be gone.

You can already see through the ice, if that's what you were complaining about, you should have opened the model and checked. You can see through ice, you just can't see through the STONE that is beneath the ice.

As for you leaving the site just because of some guy that posted on every model, that's just foolish... Learn to ignore him.

- BTW how can i ignore him when at that past time he is a model moderator and i am only a member?

That ice does not even look like ice, in the first place... My ice is clear, like real ice. You're asking me to make it blue and fuzzy like in-game ice. Sure, how about I increase the file size of my models so that I can make them look less realistic, great idea, thanks, I'll get right to it...

Let me get this straight, a moderator was rejecting all of your models over a grudge?

Nope. he just give me low rate for every model i post here. And you already know the quality of my model, right! So no doubt about moderator's grudge?!

Sometimes a person's reputation will affect people's ratings. Sometimes it's on purpose, but people's judgement can be unconsciously biased as well.

Still, you don't need to get too upset about a moderator giving you low ratings, if he's still approving your resources. I know your stuff is good, you know your stuff is good, and most people who see it know your stuff is good. If you know a person who is rating your resources has a bias that is significantly affecting his judgement, then don't let the rating upset you. I made that mistake long ago, and took my resources down from hive, all because of a few negreps (about 20) that I didn't think had just reasoning, but that I felt were really just a way of solving a grudge.

A couple of weeks ago, I finally decided that it just wasn't a good enough reason for me to take everything down, so I started making models again and uploading them, after I had stopped making models for so long. I'm a little bit rusty, but I think I'm still making things that can help people.

Anyway, my point is that you should put your stuff back up. Even if it does get low ratings, who cares? I've looked at your gallery, and there's a lot of stuff in there that can help a lot of mapmakers.

Anyway, we should continue this discussion through PM's before this thread gets too full of off-topic.

On topic: I do plan to make a low-poly version, for people who get upset about the "massive" imported file size of 12 KB. The low-poly version will fit in better with the low file size of the rest of my models, which all have very tiny file sizes which I guess people have gotten used to.

There's no telling when I will make it, though. I've got all kinds of things that I work on, and so when it comes to things like war3modding, I prefer to just do things when I feel like it. Because if I do things when I don't want to, it will turn into a job, and I'll stop enjoying it as much; that's the last thing that I want to happen to something that is recreational, and not professional.

Hooray! Standing up to a polyphobe :D Great model, quite impressive however I would prefer a little more ice, and a little less rock but that's just me. Great attachment! 5/5!

Hey dude, no need to get mad at a suggestion. I thought it was a good idea and would make it look better, after all your uploading it for the hive, not yourself. And about the realistic part, it IS warcraft, a VERY cartoony game in the first place. It's a great model but I don't like modelers who attack the reviewers. :(

You misunderstood. I wasn't using his models being rejected as an insult. I respect the models he's made, they are very good, and I was asking about why they were gone, which he later explained.
